California Street Garden

California Street Garden This is an open garden started behind the little church at Trinity & California in downtown Redding, CA. Preparation for the garden began in March 2017.

We want to see a more vibrant downtown community and that includes beautification and green, food-producing spaces. We are currently accepting donations in the form of compost, mulch materials, miscellaneous garden structures (ask for details), and seeds.

Speaking of Oak Run Elementary they're hosting a pretty awesome event this weekend. Live bluegrass provided by the band Loosely Strung, delicious homemade/home-grown food and baked goods, incredible student-made art. Its always a fun night and definitely one I look forward to every year

Now that the garden is in and starting to produce, we would love to have a group of people to help out regularly. If you would like to help in any way, please contact us! This could be as simple as watering the garden once a week or helping to pull weeds on occasion. We really want this to be a community effort.

We'd like to get official work days set up, but for now we'll be out there most Mondays and Wednesdays starting at 6:30pm. You can always message us for specifics.

This is the first planting season the garden is in place, so if you have ideas and want to make them happen, let us know!

This is totally possible. Let's start small, plan carefully, and take the opportunity to bring our food back home. We live in an amazingly fertile land and can easily support ourselves without adding pollution in the form of transport, storage, and packaging.

Could fresh, healthy, affordable food be the future of urban neighborhood development? In Detroit, Michigan, “the first sustainable urban agrihood” in the U.S. centers around an edible garden, with easily accessible, affordable produce offered to neighborhood residents and the community. Each ye…

Elizabeth Ann Cifu Shuster putting down some into the . The is almost complete. We'll be putting down wood chip like you see in the center and waiting for a few weeks for all the goodness to and then we'll start . In the meantime we have to clean up the 💩, tidy the edges, and put in 🍅 cages & trellises. Russ was out here too, putting in new windows so the whole property is looking quite fine. ||

Come help out this afternoon!

03/23/2017

This weekend we'll be out in the garden doing some more prep work to get it ready for planting! Bring a shovel if you can and come help! We'll start at 3pm, rain or shine.

03/21/2017

If you have hay ruined by rain, we can use it.

We're currently looking for bales of bad hay to throw down to build soil. Send us a message or drop it off! The worse the better. Our last batch was growing mushrooms.

For anyone interested in helping out right now, we're working on establishing the soil through sheet mulching. We need help shoveling compost and wood chips, so message us, and we'll let you know when supplies are ready (within the next few days).
