We had a blast as usual at the Puyallup reptile show. Thanks to all of our friends for stopping by and hanging out, and to everyone who bought animals from us. As you can tell by this single illustrious picture of hanging out with Big Boy, I suck at capturing all the fun that goes on at reptile shows 😂

Some crap pictures of some of what’s been going on the last couple weeks. I’ve had 21 California Kingsnakes hatch, 18 Red Spotted Garters born, and absolutely killed it herping. Work on the other hand has been kicking me in the pants for the last two weeks to make up for it 😂😂

I got my CZ 75 SP-01 back from today and it came out amazing! A spicy theme for a spicy rig. I gave Robert creative freedom and he hit an absolute home run with the Beaded Lizard theme. He nailed the pattern and the laser engraved beads are just sick!

We’ve tried a couple times this summer to visit Castle Crags but the upper lot has been full. This is the next set of mountains to the North. Nowhere near as impressive as the Crags but magnificent nonetheless.

Relocation season has begun.
Tranlocating snakes is something that seems wholesome on the surface but really isn’t ideal in most situations.
Research has shown that translocated snakes go through a period of extended hyperactivity that almost always leads to acute dehydration. Typically the next thing that’s going to happen is a reduction in immune system function. This becomes a very big deal in a wild animal given that they are all parasitized. Once the immune system weakens, the parasite load tends to dramatically increase. Most animals aren’t going to survive that. “But some might” you say? Sure, except it’s impossible to know what the carrying capacity of an area is when you translocate a snake there, in general though, almost any undisturbed area is going to be at or near carrying capacity. So assuming our relocated animal survives, it’s going to be competing directly with othwr animals in the same niche. This is often going to lead to one or the other animal leaving the area. Which then restarts the cycle mentioned above. It’s a catch 22 of high magnitude.

We’re new to dog shows and it can be a little daunting to fit into the show world especially for people who’ve always been focused on working dogs. We’re having a lot of fun with it though and we’ve pretty well figured out how to dodge a lot of the nonsense.

You get used to it after a while but it’s quite startling to come in and find one of your Heloderma this way. To make it worse, they’re usually passed out hard enough they don’t respond when you touch them. This is completely normal behavior for them though.

They don’t live forever. Lazarus was acting pretty geriatric lately. He’s never dropped a meal until this last feeding and I suspected something was up. I have no idea how old he was. I got him 5 years ago and the breeder who sold him to me had acquired him as a full size adult. Somewhere north of 15 years old on the low end and he could have been much older. I’m a little hardened to things passing because of all the years of exotics and livestock production but this one got me in the feelings a little bit. I’ll miss his consistency. He lived in a 2x4 viv most of the time I had him and I honestly can’t say I ever saw him move unless I fed him or took him out to hang out 😂
Don’t forget to really soak in the time and enjoy yourself in the snake room. The years roll by faster and faster and you’ll find yourself wishing you had more time. This is why I’m such a stickler about not overfeeding your animals. You may think when you’re new that 10-12 years for an overfed breeder is a long time but as it approaches, if you’re attached, you’ll find it’s not enough. Feeding is one easy thing you can control that will dramatically extend their lifespan. Feed em lightly and keep them a smidge cooler than the in crowd does and you’ll get whatever time you stood a chance to get.

The Dozer dog. He’ll he 6 soon. One of the most stable boulder heads I’ve worked with. Love this dude. Knows his business, but doesn’t act foolish about it. You won’t see making some crazy threat display. He’s always been fairly easy to live with for a dog with this much juice, which is worth it’s weight in gold.

I’ve seen people use nail polish but I went with permanent marker to be able to tell them apart. Same size, same color, same pattern…gotta tell them apart somehow 🤷‍♂️
Should have 4-5 Cal King clutches this season and everyone is chunky enough that I should see some double clutches as well.

In case you ever wondered if giant vacuums exist. They do. This crew is removing smoke damaged attic insulation. Before we replace the insulation we disinfect and then make some building science improvements. I haven’t said much about this but this event played a role in my decision to stop using heat tape for my ball pythons. This happened recently, which is extra ironic, because it was managing 2 of the last half dozen pieces of heat tape I use. . This is THG heat tape that was run on a VE-100 along with one other piece exactly the same length. Both pieces were tested in multiple ways with a multimeter and both tested just fine when I built them. I do it to every piece of heat tape I set up. Electricity is easy to measure and monitor. If you have 50-60 pieces of heat tape in your room, you should be checking it all the time regularly with a multimeter or even better a meter AND a thermal camera. Thermal cameras can be had for smartphones for $160. If you have a large room or multiple rooms there’s no excuse not to have one. . I have been experimenting with ambient heat the last two seasons. None of my females had underbelly heat last season and every one of them I expected to lay, did, and I’ve had no issues with the offspring that could conceivably be related to lack of a hot spot. I run my ball python room at 84 degrees and I haven’t seen a change in behavior over when I used UTH on every rack. They’re still dispersed in their tubs indicating that they are neither too hot or too cold. They still breed and lay eggs normally. . The biggest advantage to this is that I reduced the number of electrical connections by literally 100, lowering my fire risk substantially. . I’m not blaming THG or Vivarium Electronics at all. I own a business, I understand that perfection is not possible. They simply make too much heat tape and too many thermostats respectively that there is no way some it won’t fail. Goes for every manufacturer of every product created. . As a matter of fact we know the danger is quite low. I’ve had between 80-110 snakes for the last 3 years and before that still maintained about 50. This is the first time a piece of heat tape has failed.

🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 . Without an ultrasound it’s impossible to tell if a llama is pregnant. So even though we’ve been ‘expecting’ it, we really weren’t expecting it. .
