In case you ever wondered if giant vacuums exist. They do. This crew is removing smoke damaged attic insulation. Before we replace the insulation we disinfect and then make some building science improvements. Then we replace it with fabric softener scented insulation to help cut down on the old smoke smell.

I haven’t said much about this but this event played a role in my decision to stop using heat tape for my ball pythons. This happened recently, which is extra ironic, because it was managing 2 of the last half dozen pieces of heat tape I use.

This is THG heat tape that was run on a VE-100 along with one other piece exactly the same length. Both pieces were tested in multiple ways with a multimeter and both tested just fine when I built them. I do it to every piece of heat tape I set up. Electricity is easy to measure and monitor. If you have 50-60 pieces of heat tape in your room, you should be checking it all the time regularly with a multimeter or even better a meter AND a thermal camera. Thermal cameras can be had for smartphones for $160. If you have a large room or multiple rooms there’s no excuse not to have one.

I have been experimenting with ambient heat the last two seasons. None of my females had underbelly heat last season and every one of them I expected to lay, did, and I’ve had no issues with the offspring that could conceivably be related to lack of a hot spot. I run my ball python room at 84 degrees and I haven’t seen a change in behavior over when I used UTH on every rack. They’re still dispersed in their tubs indicating that they are neither too hot or too cold. They still breed and lay eggs normally.

The biggest advantage to this is that I reduced the number of electrical connections by literally 100, lowering my fire risk substantially.

I’m not blaming THG or Vivarium Electronics at all. I own a business, I understand that perfection is not possible. They simply make too much heat tape and too many thermostats respectively that there is no way some it won’t fail. Goes for every manufacturer of every product created.

As a matter of fact we know the danger is quite low. I’ve had between 80-110 snakes for the last 3 years and before that still maintained about 50. This is the first time a piece of heat tape has failed.

Without an ultrasound it’s impossible to tell if a llama is pregnant. So even though we’ve been ‘expecting’ it, we really weren’t expecting it.

Llama crias have to be left to the mother to care for without interference so we can’t really do much besides try to get them up in the holding pen so we can keep a closer eye.
