The vegetation is parched, brittle and dry, desiccated and hollow but the animals keep grazing and browsing but body condition is still pretty good considering. The shepherds move them quickly from paddock to paddock and we are now on warp speed moving much faster through acres quickly with the big mob of sheep and goats. Fence building becomes more challenging as we creep up into the oak forest laden with poison oak and forages not as palatable at this time of year. Think of the bitter stringency of sage void of hydration after months of high heat and extreme sun exposure. The animals consume up to 4% of their body weight and drink up to 2 gallons of water a day which we dose with electric blue electrolytes and provide tubs of protein molasses goo that softens in the heat. The guard dogs like to protect the tubs as if it was their own treat to covet and we try to distract them to give the animals a chance to slurp up what is now deficient in the forages they eat. We wait for the pallet of minerals to arrive special ordered from which has come out with a loose sheep mineral. It’s critical to get offer these supplements especially because of the stressors of high heat and the fight against dehydration.

Summer in SoCal has become a version of our winter where we yearn to be inside—replacing the fire place with fans or air conditioning. Water holes and the beach are the new breakroom.

As the summer continues so do the extreme heat advisories and fire season has ramped up starting earlier than previous years. Our hearts go out to the fire fighters, people and animals impacted and our comrade graziers and their animals just getting by day to day. All the while we are on the sprint to make the year’s income in just 8 months of the 12. It’s the nature of seasonal agricultural and land-based work.

It’s hard but we are essential workers and because of that and the lifestyle for those who march to a different beat it’s why we prevail against the challenges faced every day. There is pride in what we do. Our ‘grazing for good’ is an important response to challenging times now the new norm. Resilience is now the foundation of this business.

DIGGING FOR GOLD!Cows’ noses produce mucus that traps harmful bacteria before it can go into their lungs and make them sick.
