Saturday June 8th, we were at Fall City Days to introduce our clinic and answer any questions people may have had. Fortunately, it was a nice day, although, we never got our tent so it was quite hot.

Nicole stopped by to say hello after graduating last week. She shadowed for a while during part of the 2023 school year and then worked as an assistant during the summer. We would like to Congratulate her on her graduation from High School!!

HISTORY OF NATIONAL SPECIALLY-ABLE PETS DAY
National Specially-Abled Pets Day provides an opportunity to consider adopting a specially-abled animal and learn about its special needs. Navigating life as specially-abled can be almost fatal. Surviving in the wild with a broken limb or lack of vision results in almost immediate death. You can change the course of their life by bringing them into the comfort of your home.

The day honors the guardians who care for specially-abled pets and sheds light on the challenges that come with taking on such a responsibility. The journey is not easy, but it is worth it, says Colleen Paige, who dedicated May 3 as National Specially-Abled Pets Day in 2006. The experiences with specially-abled pets can be different for all people. People get to learn the intricacies of raising a pet in challenging circumstances while keeping up with their daily needs.

Disability in pets is not uncommon and can be caused by several reasons, including old age, diseases, injuries, and so on. With love and care, they can move past their conditions and live their best lives. Pets with disabilities are unfairly overlooked when it comes to adoption. When bringing a pet home, think about the change in scenery and the measures that you can take to make their stay as peaceful and resourceful as possible. The goal of the day is to raise awareness of how great the company of a pet, regardless of its physical limitations, can be for people.

The Beginning
Dog behavior expert Colleen Paige designates August 26 as American Dog Day and kickstarts her foundation.

2006
The Day Is Announced
After the success of American Dog Day, Colleen Paige announces May 3 as Disabled Dogs Day.

2007
Career Advancement
Colleen Paige publishes her new book titled “The Good Behavior Book for Dogs.”

2018
A Change In Tune
In response to the negative connotation of the title, Colleen Paige renames Disabled Pets Day as National Specially-Abled Pets Day.

Tis the season for planting flower and fruit/vegetable gardens. The PNW is known for all of its snails and slugs, and that they love to eat our fruit and vegetable plants. Here is sweet "Piper" a patient of ours. She unfortunately met up with a stinging insect and had a reaction. Dad brought her to see us for some help so hopefully she feels better soon.

Can Dogs Have Popcorn?

Popcorn itself is not bad for dogs. Popped corn kernels actually contain several minerals important to canine nutrition, like magnesium, manganese, phosphorous, and zinc, along with fiber and trace amounts of vitamins.

The stuff that makes popcorn taste delicious to humans, however, is a different story. The majority of us prefer our popcorn dripping with butter and loaded with salt, even though we know it is not good for us. The same goes for dogs. Butter, oils, salt, and the other toppings on popcorn can lead to intestinal upset in dogs, and the fats in oil and butter also contribute to obesity and obesity-related health problems. There is an alternative. Plain, air-popped popcorn makes a nice, occasional treat for your dog. But kernels can get stuck in dogs’ teeth and pose a choking hazard, so it is probably a good idea to keep whole or only partially popped kernels away from curious dogs.

Tips for dressing up your pet:

If your pet doesn't like dressing up, let them sit this holiday out.
Be sure it fits. Restricting movement or ability to breathe can cause injury or illness.
Many pets like to chew. Avoid loose or dangling pieces which can cause choking hazards.

Set up a literal catwalk and treat your furry friends to some safe, comfortable fashion, organize a fun photo shoot or go all out with matching outfits.

If your dog does not like their ears cleaned, here is a video of a way to do it so they are not as unhappy about it. It may not happen right away, but if you slowly start by just touching around the ear while they are distracted by food and gradually working towards the ear flap etc., it might make it better for both parties.

Yesterday we received some SAD news from the Seahawks. They have let Pete Carroll go as head coach and asked him to take on a more administrative position. He has given us 14 years of exciting football, and I hope that we will still see him walking up and down the field, chewing his gum and talking with the referees. I have loved watching him always giving hugs and pats on the back to his players. Thank you so much Pete!!
