Since its founding in 2002 the Tashunka program has offered horsemanship instruction, horse leasing, trips, leadership development, and has developed into a dynamic and varied program which now includes boarding, training, apprenticeship, hauling, show services, clinics, consultation, and rehabilitation. Over the past few years the Tashunka programs have been available to a diverse group of people

, ranging in age from 5 to 65. Some have found their victories in the show arena with a well earned round of applause, others by qualifying for the state championships; some have discovered their achievements in the high country of Montana, Idaho, Canada, Washington, and Oregon; some created their own successes right at home by overcoming obstacles and mastering the unimaginable; others have had the pleasure of experiencing Tashunka in their own ways!
...and for those inquiring minds.....The name "Tashunka" is a Lakota Sioux word that translates to mean "male horse" This name was selected due to its unique quality and meaning.

Ms Paisley had the morning off due to heavy rains at the farm. It was a well deserved day off as she had a pretty big day on Friday and Sunday. Friday I brought her to the round pen which she seemed to enjoy, and had so much fun she didnt want to get caught. Sunday I brought her back to the round pen with the intention of working on approaching and catching. Hard to say at this point, but Sunday it sure seemed like she liked to trot out and at times was willingly trotting without any drive from me. She is a REALLY nice mover :)

Over the weekend we had a number of Tashunka riders participating at the 4H Spring Ranch Riding, Western, and English show at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds. I was thoroughly impressed with the patience and fortitude of these young riders and am immensely proud of each and everyone of them. It was the first show for 2 of the riders, and Panda's debut performance! :D Way to go Aerin, Katelyn, Nora, Lucille, Sebastian, and Sierra!!

Good Morning! Ya gotta love the roller coaster of horse training :) two days ago I was able to get a halter on the new mustang in the morning, and she gave her first lesson in the afternoon. Yesterday she was leading around like a showmanship pro! Today she smartly refused the halter but still led around quite well with just her neck rope. These horses do a great job of keeping us on our toes and keeping our egos in check! :)
If you have any ideas for a name for the new filly please email or text me. She is a 3 year old grey mare out of Paisley Desert in Oregon. It would be great if her full name could include "Tashunka" in it. I will post the top name options this weekend for everyone to vote on!

I had hoped to post training updates each day since we got home but haven't seemed to find the time. The good news is we have been videoing each session in hopes of sharing the videos but have some audio issues to work out. As soon as that's worked out we should be ready to roll! :)
The update on the 3 year old is that she is doing GREAT! I have been taking it slow, and today was able to get her halter and lead on and walked her around without resistance.
Next step will be to give her a name! :) Keep an eye out for a naming contest!

The new mustang filly enjoying her first day of turnout in the round pen :)

So what I thought was a really neat but random moment on Sunday night has turned into a pretty consistent trick. Mr Spitfire and I are working on coordinating our nap times! If I lay down in the arena (which I dont normally do, nor do I suggest doing due to countless safety issues!!!) Spitfire checks on me and than lays down next to me. :D Just over three weeks in and starting to feel better! Definitely behind schedule but making up for it!! Monday he went through the waterbox without any argument, and Tuesday he got saddled up cinch and all! Day 7! Home safe and sound! While I was in the air it looks like the complete trail results were posted! I ended up 32nd for trail out of 49 people. Definitely not as well as I had hoped, but understandable based on our go! :( On a happier note, if a high point had been tallied that included the points from all 6 of my classes I would have been in 14th place! not too shabby!

Mustang Million Warm Up 9/16

Nelly and I are warming up in the John Justin Arena. Just working on leg work and getting her lightened up after not riding for almost a week. She did GREAT! Most of the other horses in the arena are in the Legends division. I didn't realize until much later that we weren't supposed to be warming up there. Ooops! :)

Chance & the Mattress

Check out Chance and Tenley tackling the mattress obstacle for the first time! So far Chance has approached every obstacle we can throw at him with curiosty and willingness. :)

Chance & the Saddle Pad

In this video Collin and R-A introduce Chance to a saddle pad for the first time! The video has been sped up to show the 4 minute session in just 2 minutes to keep the file sizes manageable.

Chance & the Car Wash

Chance and Emily were looking for a new challenge, so Collin and R-A put together a quick car wash for them to attempt. The video starts with Emily bringing Chance out of his paddock. After we the obstacle Collin continued to film as Emily went back and forth a number of times without issue. The video has been edited to just show the first go.

Here is a video of the BLM Palomino Valley Adoption Center in Sparks, Nevada. This is the largest Mustang preparation and adoption facility in the country. The video only shows a tiny bit of the actual facility where our Mustangs were picked up from.

Cavalia Preview

HOLY SMOKES!! I had a very last minute opportunity to attend the Media Preview of Cavalia at Marymoor Park. The show is supposed to start tonight and continue until Feb. 12th.
