We would like to give a warm welcome to Dr. Margo Crausaz (Intern) to the Bayhill Team!

Dr. Margo Crausaz started riding from a young age in the Santa Cruz mountains, where her passion for horses bloomed and her love of show jumping began.

Early on, she knew this passion would evolve into becoming a veterinarian. Highly influenced by her own horse, her interest in sports medicine and behavior grew. Dr. Crausaz received her BVM&S (DVM equivalence) from the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies in Edinburgh, Scotland. After being away for 4 years, she is excited for the California sunshine!

Outside of work, you can find Dr. Crausaz hiking with her dog, Lucie, experimenting in the kitchen with new recipes and baked goods, and going to concerts and comedy shows.

To my Bayhill family:

It is with many mixed emotions, (even as I am typing this), that I am announcing that
I will be retiring from Bayhill Equine after 37 years of successful practice. My planned
exit date will be in September and until then I plan on reducing my schedule to three
days per week.

I began working in the Bay Area right after my graduation in 1986, and opened
Bayhill Equine in 1991. From the beginning of my lifelong love of caring for horses,
my passion was always sports medicine. I actually began working at the local race
tracks but after a few years I migrated towards sport horses. I have been committed
to staying on the cutting edge of sports medicine and rehabilitation of the equine
athlete for many years and I am proud to say we have fulfilled that promise from day
one.
I feel so fortunate to have lived virtually all of my professional dreams and I have all
of the people reading this message to thank for these accomplishments.

Because I have been in the Bay Area my entire career, I have also had the pleasure of
developing many long term relationships with our clients. I have been reminiscing
about those multi-generational relationships as I prepare for this closure. Many of
you are 2 nd generation clients with a few being even 3rd generation. This is amazing
to me.

The good news is long ago I made a commitment to establish the Bayhill culture in a
way that would ensure it will happily continue in my absence. If I’ve done this
correctly, my departure should have a minimal impact on every client and every
horse. And those of you who have been Bayhill clients for many years also know the
practice has always been more than me. I have been surrounded by incredible talent
including other Vets and Techs who I have trained and mentored. The transition plan
created in anticipation of my retirement has been designed to emphasize continuity
and consistency of care. Our goal continues to be exceeding client expectations. I am
confident that Bayhill will not miss a beat in providing the level of service that you
have grown to expect.
While this announcement is “bittersweet” I am reassured knowing I am leaving you
in the best hands. Drs. Petersen and Yocom share my passion, skills, and
commitment in every way that matters. I am excited to see Bayhill continue to
thrive.

In closing, please allow me to express my sincere gratitude for being able to do what
I love with so many wonderful clients and patients. Every time I attended an external
meeting for a professional association or continuing education and spoke with other
veterinarians I was reminded of my good fortune. I was also honored to be selected
and serve as a Team Veterinarian at two World Equestrian Games and at several
individual competitions here in the U.S. and in Europe.
So when that day in September comes, I will retire knowing that my career is
complete.
Thank you again to each of you for providing me with so many happy memories,
friendships, and successes. It has been my pleasure and truly has been “quite a ride.”
Now it’s time for Tom and I to find a new trail to ride and a new fence to jump.

Sincerely,

Wayne Browning, DVM

💙 Welcome to the Bayhill Team! 🦄

Dr. Alicia Yocom is originally from San Francisco, CA and grew up riding on the Peninsula. She attended UC Davis for veterinary school, and then completed a private practice internship at The Piedmont Equine Practice, Inc. in Virginia followed by an academic internship at Colorado State University. After working in equine private practice for a few years, Dr. Yocom pursued and completed a three-year residency in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation at Colorado State University. After successfully completing and passing her board examination, she became board certified in equine sports medicine and rehabilitation in 2023. Dr. Yocom enjoys all aspects of equine veterinary medicine and is particularly passionate about poor performance cases, lameness cases, alternative therapies, and diagnostic imaging. She strives to help her patients feel their best in every chapter of their lives, from the show ring to retirement and everything in between.

When she is not working, Dr. Yocom enjoys hiking with her dog Rosie, gardening, and spending time with friends and family including her two cats, Thedore and Stewie.

Bayhill is pleased to announce that Dr. Alicia Yocom has joined the practice! Dr. Yocom is a 2013 graduate from the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. Since graduation, Dr. Yocom has spent the majority of her time between Colorado and the Bay Area. After working as an associate veterinarian in two private practices, she returned to Colorado State University in 2019 to complete an intense three year residency in Equine Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation. She completed the program in 2022, and then successfully passed the board examination earlier this year. We are excited to welcome Dr. Yocom to Bayhill, and think that her knowledge and expertise in both sports medicine and rehabilitation will be a valuable asset to Bayhill and its clients.

Team Bayhill takes the field for castration day!

Fun fact Friday: Geldings outnumber stallions somewhere in the region of 100 to 1! Castration is usually performed at a young age, often less than a year old, as long as both testicles have descended. The procedure is quick and relatively simple, although for those with a queasy disposition it can appear gruesome! There are two methods of performing a castration – either under standing sedation, or under general anaesthesia. In most cases the standing method is used due to the risks of a general anaesthetic. We would recommend castration under general anaesthetic in older animals, donkeys and certain draught breeds. Castrations are ideally performed in the winter months, when there are few flies around.

Did you know...

That for every 1 centimeter of extra toe length-this results in an extra 50 kilograms of force acting on the tendons?

And...

A -1 degree drop in the sole angle where the deep digital flexor tendon inserts into the coffin bone (affected by the Palmar Angle) can lead to a 4% increase in the pressure exerted by the DDFT on the navicular bone?

(Credit Dr. Renate Weller)

Additionally, long toes means that the heels migrate forward which causes concussive damage to the navicular region.

This is why knowledgeable and timely trimming is necessary to an equine's well being. People need to also get far away from the idea that an 8 week trim schedule is adequate for all horses since in a 5-6 week cycle 3-4% correct angle is lost almost every time (depending on the surfacing your horse stays on) and this results in 20% more load on the tendons.

Have you tried shopping yet? I just did. Check out this awesome Silicon Valley business model. I spend $200 on pants and I only need to spend slightly over $100 to try them on and return them when they don’t fit! I guess isn’t messing with figuring out a road to profitability. Right ?
