Retractable leashes can be dangerous because they can cause injuries to both the dog and the owner due to the potential for sudden jolts when the leash reaches its full extension, the thin cord can easily get tangled, causing cuts or burns, and they can give the owner a false sense of control, making it difficult to quickly react to dangerous situations; additionally, they can encourage pulling behavior in dogs, leading to further issues with control and potential aggression towards other animals or people. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]
Key dangers of retractable leashes: [2, 9]

• Neck injuries: A sudden stop at the end of the leash can cause neck strain or injury to the dog, especially if they are pulling hard. [2, 9]
• Cord entanglement: The thin cord can easily wrap around the owner's hands, legs, or the dog's body, leading to cuts or rope burns. [1, 4, 10]
• Lack of control: The extended length of the leash can make it difficult to quickly react to situations requiring immediate control, such as encountering another dog. [3, 5]
• Encourages pulling: Dogs may learn to pull more when using a retractable leash as they are rewarded with more freedom when they do so. [6, 11]
• Malfunction risk: The internal mechanism of a retractable leash can malfunction, causing the leash to suddenly release or break. [1, 9, 12]
• Tripping hazard: The cord can become tangled underfoot, causing the owner to trip. [10, 13]
• Injuries to other animals: If a dog on a retractable leash is not under control, it can easily get into altercations with other dogs, potentially leading to injuries. [5, 6]

A happy ending!

In the midst of the heartbreaking tragedy, NBC News reporter Liz Kreutz shared a heartwarming story.

On the first day of the fire, which began on January 7th, a distraught man named Casey Colvin approached Kreutz. He was out of the home when he got his evacuation notice as the fires had started that morning, and he could not get home to his two dogs, Oreo and Tika Tika Tika, whom he lovingly referred to as his family. A brave firefighter was able to save Tika Tika Tika on day one, but Oreo ran from the stranger, and everyone was worried about the small dog in the fire.

After five days and countless attempts, Casey was able to rescue his sweet pup.

We know our dogs have many fans who visit on a regular basis and we LOVE this! You all help keep them in the public view and we love seeing you visit.
If by chance you come by when we are showing a dog to someone who made and appointment and is considering adoption, please respect the process and give us some privacy.
When the dogs are meeting new people, they need to be the focus of our attention! This is the chance for the dogs to meet new people that may become their new family. If you inject your presence, it may have a negative impact on the process!
Please be respectful!

Santa brought much-needed supplies to the shelter 🐶. We were a bit tardy picking up the much-needed food and a big box of toys and treats! A huge thanks to everyone who blessed us. The weather has been keeping us down, the pups don't want to play outside and they have been a bit stressed with all the thunder and lighting.
