This is also what I’m dealing with tonight.
Rest of family was killed by a stray cat on my property.
Keep your cats indoors!!!

Just in the United States they kill over 1 Billion birds 🐦 and about 1 Billion small mammals 🐰 each year!!!

How many people do you think I am?!?

I took a Friday off to go on vacation with my family for a long weekend.
That’s it for the summer, no other family vacations.

During that time, including Saturday and Sunday way into the night I have been barraged by calls wanting me to fix everyone’s animal’s long standing health issues immediately.

I am still receiving texts and calls tonight after 8:30 PM after working for over 12 hrs and still have to do a necropsy on a woodchuck probably at midnight.

Enough is enough!

DO NOT CONTACT ME AT NIGHT OR THE WEEKEND, PERIOD!!!

This is not a confusing concept!

Number 3 Care primers:

HANDLING WILDILFE

STEP 1: DON’T!

Unless absolutely necessary, for as limited time as possible, do not interact with wildlife.

First, there are numerous laws prohibiting handling, housing, care of wild species.

This includes, mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, molluscs and insects.

Hundreds of species are threatened or endangered in every state.
It is often unclear if you are handling an endangered species.

An example is the Eastern cottontail rabbit compared to the New England cottontail.

Almost identical, except for young animals have a white forehead blaze in Eastern and black blaze in New England. As adults, virtually no difference.
The New England cottontail is threatened/endangered throughout its range and part of a breeding program at Roger Williams Zoo.

Most rabbits that get “rescued” are waiting for their mother to come feed them and will sit hidden most of the day.

Unless you are a certified wildlife rehabber, even a rabbit can be very difficult to raise.

Most birds fledge and stay near/on the ground where the parents feed them for days to weeks.

Once imprinted on humans, most animals, if they survive, cannot be released; because they will lose the ability to survive in the wild.

With all those concerns, I haven’t even touched on Zoonotic diseases. These are diseases that spread amongst species and to humans. This accounts for at least 60% of all viruses, bacteria, parasites that animals carry. We are not anything special, just another animal that can get ill.

Rabies is one of the biggest concerns, carried by any mammal.

Tularemia is very prevalent in rabbbits and just handling them, breathing the bacteria from their skin/fur or a tick bite from an infected animal can make you very ill.

Symptoms include: skin ulcers, enlarged lymph nodes, pneumonia, diarrhea, etc… and death ☠️ if untreated.

This is one of hundreds of diseases that make you or your pets mildly ill to dead.

With all these legal, safety, health and concerns for the wild animals themselves… if you find a definitively injured animal, call a vet or a wildlife rehabilitation center.

Otherwise, unless the animal is in imminent danger on a road or being attacked by your pet…

LEAVE THEM ALONE!

Thank you from all the furry 🐰, feathered 🦉, scaled 🐍, slimy 🐸 and creepy crawly 🪲 creatures out there.

Never posted the obligatory wildlife pictures from the very aggravating trip to Iceland.
Icelandic horses and sheep survive on minimal food and are the meat animals.
The Icelandic cattle are small and are kept inside during the winter because they are not cold hardy, very odd.

Two species of bee fly
Skipper butterfly and another unidentified very tiny (1 cm) species
Tiger beetle… fastest land animal by proportional speed.
A human would have to run at over 720 mph, nearly the speed of sound to be equivalent.
They run so fast they have to sprint and stop regularly in order for their eyes to catch up and process the images.

Selection of more species from the Cryptozoology Museum.
The Tapanuli Orangutan 🦧 described formally as a 3rd species of Orangutan in 2017, and could easily be seen as a “Bigfoot” species by locals.

On a lighter and educational note from my last post… A trip last weekend to Portland, Maine to the International Cryptozoology Museum and Conference.
Cryptozoology is actually a science not fantasy and it is the study of unexplained/undiscovered species around the world.

I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the species only discovered in the last 50-100 years. Such as the Komodo dragon, the Okapi, the Pygmy hippo, Red Panda, Malayan Tapir, and King Cheetah (only really a color morph)… and the teenage boy, the most unexplainable species of all.

I really hate to keep posting about this; but, once again:

I am not an Emergency facility!

I Do Not know what other vets/hospitals have for appointments!

I Do Not work in the wee hours of the morning or on the weekend!

Thursday is my “Day Off”, on which I try to do the dozens of personal things I need to do along with playing catch up for the business!

I am exhausted with receiving 1-2 dozen calls/texts on these aforementioned days saying, “Happy Saturday/Sunday, I need…
I know it’s late a night, but I want…
I know you don’t work today, but…”

This is inappropriate and unacceptable and from now on repeat offenders will not only be ignored they will be asked to find a vet elsewhere who spends every waking hour contacting clients back and worrying if everyone was responded their days off.

I have done that for 19 years including on every vacation or at a conference.

No More.

03/14/2024

I really don’t know how to put this anymore because clearly no one cares.
I am physically, mentally, and emotionally drained from being contacted at all hours of everyday of the week.
I am expected to be available for either an exhaustive phone conversation or I’m wanted to drop everything, cancel other clients/patients and come see your pet.
There has been a movement for years, to little or no avail, online called NOMV (Not One More Vet) due to the extremely high su***de rate among veterinarians and staff, currently 6 x higher than the general population.
I also be accused lately of being abrupt and having a hostile tone when I speak to people.
Well that’s my coping mechanism luckily instead of su***de.
I want everyone to take a deep look at how they would feel if for nearly 30 years, 19 running your own business, where you were never allowed a break and browbeaten even if you bent over backwards and sacrificed personal and family time constantly.
I don’t want anyone’s thoughts and prayers, pity, or any other nonsense.
I want respect that I am doing way more than I should be or can most days.
Because, if not, very soon, I won’t be able to do this anymore and everyone will be out of luck.

So here’s a rant on my “vacation” and Iceland in general.

The trip started with my flight being cancelled on the way to Boston. Turned around and left 24 hrs later.

So first day lost.

Arrived to completely changed itinerary and no rescheduled trip to the “famous” Blue Lagoon and immediately heading out on our drive because our first night in Reykjavík was cancelled. ( By the way still fighting with the tour company for a refund for that night even though cancelled well within the time needed)

Immediately found out that Iceland DOES NOT PLOW ANYTHING! The parking areas, entrances to buildings, walkways, trails, roads, everything.
I saw only 2 snow shovels in the entire country.
Everything under the snow is sheets of ice.

Also on Day 1 there my mother, who was supposed to be watching my 15 year old son, was admitted to the hospital with erratic BP for 4 days.

So that set off a flurry of calls, texts and emails for days to assess my mother and my son’s situations and wellbeing.

Back to driving. Hours upon hours of white out blizzards so severe the locals pulled off the road. Numerous cars abandoned in ditches, blown off the roads.
Nearly all of the 1400 miles I drove had these conditions or the roads were just sheets of ice with 40-50 mph winds threatening to push you off a ravine in a winding mountain pass.

But, no rest for the weary, we had a set itinerary and had to make it to a new location each night and locations during the day.

A big problem with Nordic Visitor’s itinerary is that it is clearly summer based.
Over 75% of all the places on our itinerary, which was planned for months and delivered to us in a large, 85 page, customized book by email and printed upon arrival, were either closed, inaccessible on impassable roads or nonexistent!

So my wife and I had to just figure it out and remake our own itinerary with anything we could find.
Even the locations we could get to were so underwhelming and touristy with people social media posting and drones flying to record their nonsense.

Thankfully the food was very good. The singular positive.

I had also clearly posted and changed my message to indicate that I was away for the week and not contact me.
Apparently that fell on deaf ears and blind eyes.
Over a dozen voicemails, 18 texts, a dozen on messenger and several emails.
Only 2 people were told to update me.

Finally headed back to Reykjavík on the last day to get an alert that the volcano erupted again and our rescheduled blue lagoon trip was cancelled again and we were sent to the Sky lagoon which is at the back end of an industrial park in Reykjavík. Not a great experience.
And our hotel said, “Hold my beer…” and had pipes burst due to the cold; thought I was in Iceland and they insulated pipes?
So had to stay last minute at the Skuggi hotel. Even though it is an Icelandic word make it English and that was the experience.

As a final travel note, I always try to learn the language of wherever I am going. I spent months taking Icelandic in order to converse in the native tongue and understand what was being said even though English would have sufficed there.
Only 4 people responded in Icelandic or appreciated that I had learned the language.
I have learned French, Spanish, Afrikaans, Fijian, Tongan, Malagasy and other local dialects and have always felt appreciated by locals, not in Iceland.

Finally getting home to a storm messing up my entire day, which I guess was for the best; because, I spent 6 hours yesterday fielding phone calls and other messages.

So take home messages:
Don’t go to Iceland in winter unless you have a specific goal.
Do not use Nordic Visitor.
Does not constitute a vacation to decompress if constantly barraged by problems back home including clients contacting me.

Not looking for sympathy or even understanding because that has not happened in 30 years of being a vet.
Just a rant.

I’ll follow with a post of obligatory “pretty” pictures.

01/27/2024

I will be completely closed and unavailable for any messages, texts, calls, emails, etc from February 2nd through February 12th.

Any messages left during this time will be ignored and erased, no exceptions.

Thanks for your understanding.

Number 2 in Care Primers:

EYE PROBLEMS

In most cases eye problems should not be left for more than 24 hours after the issues arise.

1) Redness: This can be in the limbus, which
is the part of the eye just under
the eyelids. Or the sclera, the
white part of the eye. Or the
skin around the eye.

Although usually a minor issue, conjunctivitis is general inflammation of the tissues of the eye. Blepharitis, which is eyelid swelling with or without the redness.
Both of these can be due to minor irritation or rubbing, related to something in the eye or allergies.

However, if after a bath or redness gets worse over 24 hours it can indicate chemical irritation of the eye or worsening rubbing and allergies.

2) Swelling or cloudiness of the cornea

This is usually due to trauma to the eye resulting in a corneal ulcer.

This needs to be addressed immediately as it can lead to a non-healing ulcer, chronic scarring of the cornea or even eye rupture and need for removal of the eye.

3) Bulging of the eye:

This can be due to pressure pushing the eye out from behind: usually due to a tooth abscess or a salivary gland blockage.

This can also be due to Glaucoma, increased pressure within the eye.

4) Cataracts: Very common as
animals age; the lens keeps
thickening and distorts getting
cloudy.

This, however, can lead to a problem called a luxated lens. The cataract shifts into the anterior (front) chamber of other eye. The eye will suddenly look whiter than the other eye when you look at the center.

The lens now blocks the normal outflow of fluid, increases pressure and glaucoma results.

A good rule of thumb:
Any sudden color change, swelling/bulging, chronic squinting, refusal to open mouth with the eye bulging, rubbing at eye for more than 12-24 hours… call to have the situation assessed immediately.

In just the past month I have had 2 patients lose an eye because the problem was left unattended for more than 2-3 days.

Eyes 👀 👁️ 👁️, are quite durable, even though the cornea is only 4 cells thick, can breakdown very rapidly and proper attention should always be paid to them.

11/15/2023

Number 1 in my CARE PRIMERS:

VOMITING AND DIARRHEA

Very simply: If ANY animal/person (who are also animals) experiences any episodes, even one, of vomiting or diarrhea; stop all food for 24 hours, period.

The only exception is animals that are younger than about 9-10 months, stop food for 12 hours.

Water can typically still be given to prevent dehydration as long as there is not chronic vomiting or dry heaving.

If the vomiting and diarrhea have calmed down/subsided after 24 hours, a bland diet of either boiled chicken or beef can be given in small meals for 2-3 days.

DO NOT ADD RICE.

After the 2-3 days, slowly mix regular food back in over another 3 days.

KEY POINTS:

1) NO food for 12-24 hrs depending on age

2) Water still to be given

3) Bland diet for 2-3 days

4) Mix regular food with bland for 3 days

5) Excessive vomiting or diarrhea, especially with other signs of illness such as lethargy, bloating, blood in vomit or feces—> Call ☎️ the veterinarian or the ER.

11/15/2023

I’m going to start posting some basic care protocols along with more in-depth disease work-ups.
I’ve been getting way too many calls on cases that could be handled easily at home or the other extreme of people waiting way too long to contact me for a disorder that should have been addressed much sooner.

08/31/2023

Please STOP buying over the counter medications, supplements, “nutraceuticals”!
Wether they are human or pet products most have little to no regulation on actual contents being present, minimal ingredient breakdown with actual amounts, only anecdotal or “white paper” reports on efficacy, and very often ineffective at best and quite toxic at worst ingredients.

At least 75% of the ear cleaning or treatment products have some alcohol compound which can be from very drying to heavily damaging to the ear.

Topical skin sprays, creams and shampoos can be damaging and often toxic if ingested. Also most are quite ineffective; because, internal treatment of either an allergy or an autoimmune disease needs to be treated to address skin issues.

Silver based products vary wildly in their contents and are mostly useless in what they tout to treat.

Bach flower remedies are based on what is termed a “decussation” ,their own term,
which is typically a parts per billion “solution” of some sort of herb or mineral in distilled water which supposedly changes the molecular structure of water to effect a treatment.
I know that sounds fanciful and ridiculous… that’s because it is!
Water has one of the most stable molecular structures known and cannot be altered by dipping something into it.
And the only thing effective at parts per billion is Polonium if you want to kill a political rival.

Herbs/Nutraceuticals are basically under no regulatory oversight except for the ones the company has imposed on themselves. Basically ”the fox 🦊 guarding the hen house”.

An unknown number or herbal products have not only toxic compounds and plant by-products but little regulation on the actual active compounds listed on the label.

Basically, the bottom line is: Do Not buy and/or use these products without understanding what is in them, if what’s listed in them is actually present and if what’s present won’t harm or kill your pet.

08/11/2023

STOP waiting for weeks and months for a problem to build with your pet and then contact me and want to be seen immediately.
Then keep begging and brow-beating me that you will meet me somewhere or ”I’m sure you can squeeze me in somewhere”.

If you pet is sick for more than 24-48 depending on the organ system, CALL!

Discuss the problem, during normal business hours, not text me at 11 PM or 5 AM on Sunday.

Then it can get addressed properly.

I have compete compassion fatigue from trying to help everyone… and before I get commentary on how I need to take care of myself, that feeling is Never going to stop because that’s ingrained in me and what made me go into veterinary medicine.

Just do your part and pay attention and address issues in the appropriate fashion.

06/28/2023

I AM NOT AVAILABLE 24 HOURS A DAY!

STOP contacting me stating that “ I know it’s your day off, or it’s after hours, or it’s a weekend and you did say you were away… but I’m going to leave you a message that I want you to deal with as soon as possible “!

I’m not looking for sympathy but my son stopped breathing and had to be intubated for over 8 hours while in for a very minor biopsy on Friday.

I still dealt with over 30 clients/patients that day and saw 5 visits after running to the hospital during my morning scheduled surgery.

After he was stable and extubated and I came home at 10 PM and my wife spent the night, I ran multiple lab samples and got packages ready for the next morning to be sent to clients on Saturday.

If there is some sort of allusion that I’m turning people away because I’m not working enough hours or I should be available whenever someone has a whim to contact me, that is not the situation.

I am currently doing paperwork for a data breach on my financial planning company while tending to my daughter who had her wisdom teeth out yesterday; and I have already dealt with 6 clients and I don’t ”start” work today until 2 PM.

I’m overworked, over tired, over stressed most days and I just want a little understanding and respect from people realizing that I’m not omnipotent and indestructible.

If things don’t change I’m just going to stop responding to messages unless they are during set business hours.

A couple of interesting shots.
First the barn owl opened one eye and I obtained a photo of her retinal vessels!
The Guadeloupe forest thrush from previous post was hopping around and when it spotted my taking pictures, that is what happened!
These birds can seen nearly 360 degrees around so no need to look ”directly “ at me… but he did, just to make a point.

The bird was extra scary because the mongoose from the previous post was 20 feet from the bird, they eat birds. This one however looked at the bird and ran into the woods!
The bird continued to hop around in the open then gave me a stare down!
