A Black Egg in the Nest: A Cayuga Surprise!

Today, I discovered something truly extraordinary in the duck coop—a black egg! If you’ve never seen one before, it’s almost like finding a little treasure tucked away in the nest. This beautiful dark egg is courtesy of one of my Cayuga ducks, and it’s just another reason why I love having these unique birds in my flock.

What Makes Cayuga Eggs Special?

Cayuga ducks are famous for laying eggs with dark shells, especially early in the season. The black color comes from a natural pigment coating applied to the shell as the egg forms. Over time, as the ducks lay more eggs, the pigment lightens, creating a gradient of grays, greens, and eventually white eggs later in the season.

Holding this black egg in my hand today reminded me of why Cayugas are such fascinating birds. Not only are they gorgeous with their shimmering, iridescent feathers, but they also bring a bit of surprise and wonder to everyday chores!

Why Cayugas Are a Perfect Addition
• They’re calm, friendly, and easy to care for.
• They’re hardy and adapt well to different climates.
• Their eggs are not only delicious but also a conversation piece!

I feel so lucky to share my space with these incredible ducks and to experience little moments like this one. Whether you’re already a duck owner or thinking about starting a flock, I can’t recommend Cayugas enough—they’re truly special.

Have you ever seen or collected a black egg?

Hay! Hay! Hay!

Cold Weather Care for Livestock ❄️

When the temperatures drop snow and ice cover the ground, ensuring your livestock has constant access to hay is one of the most important things you can do. Here’s why:

🌾 Hay Keeps Them Warm: Eating hay generates heat during digestion, which helps animals regulate their body temperature in cold weather. It’s their natural furnace, so providing plenty of high-quality hay is essential for their comfort and well-being.

🐐 🐴 🐄 Energy for the Cold: Cold weather increases energy demands for livestock, as they burn more calories to stay warm. Hay is a critical energy source, especially when grass is unavailable under snow or frost.

🥶 Preventing Cold Stress: A steady supply of hay can help prevent cold stress, which can weaken animals, reduce production, and leave them more vulnerable to illness.

Whether you’re caring for goats, horses, cattle, or other livestock, always make sure they have access to a consistent supply of hay during the winter. A well-fed animal is a warm and healthy animal!

Stay cozy out there—and don’t forget to stock up on hay for your herd!

Snow Day in North Carolina! ❄️Our little dusting of snow might have us excited, but the ducks? Totally unimpressed. Half of them are from Pennsylvania and Delaware, so I guess less than an inch of snow doesn’t even register on their radar! Meanwhile, they’re just hanging out like it’s any other day. Guess we’ll leave the excitement to the humans!
