I know I'm always telling my clients to get their puppies out to socialize but given the current infectious dog illness going around I am changing my recommendations. Yes, take your puppies to see people but avoid meeting other dogs! Until there is a known treatment, the risks are too high. Stay far away from any dogs that are coughing, sneezing, or reverse sneezing as those are the signs and this seems to be an airborne illness. To be extra safe, you could wipe your dogs feet after walking with a 10% bleach solution.

January is National Train Your Dog Month and to celebrate I'm starting a round of on-line trick classes. You can earn AKC titles or just have fun with your dog in your own covid-safe environment. You dog will learn useful things like hand signals for sit and down; sit pretty, crawl, spin and twirl for fitness; get in a box (to teach you how to shape behavior with a clicker); and lots more. Intermediate dogs will take it to the next level. Classes will meet once a week on Wed afternoon for 6 weeks. $150 covers the class and the (optional) testing and titling. Classes will start as soon as they fill. You must have access to zoom and fb to be in the class.
Do you have an elderly or injured dog that is having trouble with your slippery floors? These look very cool.

One more shout out for the Novice Tricks Class starting this Tuesday at 4:30. One opening in the class. PM if you'd like to join.
Why teach tricks? It's not really about the tricks. It's about having a fun, working relationship with your dog based on mutual respect and appreciation. It's about learning to use a clicker and understand how to shape behavior.
I am beginning an AKC Novice Tricks on zoom, March 1, at 4:30, for 6 weeks. Location, location, location doesn't matter!!! Cost is $150 and I can still take another student or two. Please also let me know if you are interested in Intermediate T… See more
I need a few more students to start two trick classes: AKC novice, and AKC intermediate. Please contact me below or pm for more details. It's great for families, kids, bored dogs, frustrated owners and for folks who just need some more fun dog time in their lives.

Let the dogs out but didn't feed and sent them back to bed. Seems to have worked.

From a beloved Veterinary Professional:
We. Are. Drowning.
As of 2021 there are now 183,000,000 pets (dogs and cats) owned in the US. In 2018 there were 135,000,000.
Our country added FOURTY EIGHT MILLION patients to our profession in 3 years.
In 2018 there were 113,394 veterinarians.
In 2021 there ARE 118,624 plus our dedicated techs and assistants who are floundering under this burden.
Our profession has added 5,320 doctors. That is ONE doctor for every 1000 animals.
Let me say that again: that is ONE DVM PER 1000 patients.
YOU DO THE MATH. If you’re frustrated you cannot get in with your pet, if you’re mad about wait times at ANY vet’s office, if you’re feeling your pet is not getting the attention it deserves, it’s not. Because we can’t. WE CANNOT. Our profession CANNOT statistically support this rate of expansion at this time, in this country. PERIOD.
We are trying. We are drowning. This is inhuman and our profession is imploding. Think about it, human hospitals are not able to handle the sheer magnitude of the sick human population during COVID. And WE (veterinary medicine) are not able to handle how may pets were adopted (or more often) PURCHASED during the COVID pandemic.
This will not go away. These pets will live normal long lives (most of them) and so our profession will not be out of this for over a decade. If you think this “crazy wait time” will subside with the country wide pandemic, think again. There are only so many vet schools. Only so many new veterinary doctors. And endless patients out there…
Please THINK about that before you berate us. Yell at us. Get frustrated with us. Tell us we don’t care about your pet. Please think about that before you decide now is a good time to buy a dog or a cat.
Please think about that when that exhausted veterinary nurse comes to bring your pet inside and you have to wait hours to talk to the doctor. One doctor for every 1000 patients. This is a cry for help and compassion. From the trenches.
Want to help? Be kind. Be patient. Be understanding.
Help us. ❤️
Interesting study (though tiny).

A study explores how your dog does when you're not home.
I get asked about pet insurance a lot. Here's an interesting chart that makes a nice jumping off place for your research.
I'm now meeting vaxxed clients in their homes after an introductory 2 hour zoom for history and basic skills. Please contact me if you are interested in this new option. I will still meet you in the park and on zoom if unvaxxed.
For those waiting for trick classes, I want to apologize and say they are not starting at this point. I have taken the pulse of most of my clients and realize that we are all tired of being on computers and want to be outside in this beautiful spring weather. Once we get in the hot summer weather, I will ask about interest again, but for now, go outside with your dog and let me know when you want to be inside again.

Perfect.
Virtual trick classes will begin in May. Sign up will start the last week of April. This is an opportunity to connect with your dog in a happy way.
My goal is always to help people and their pets live harmoniously together. We owe our pets a good fulfilling life in exchange for asking them to share our home. It doesn't mean no boundaries, a recipe for disaster, but it does mean caring deeply about their happiness.

When we focus on making dogs happy, it’s better for them and us.
