🐾 Happy National Animal Shelter & Rescue Appreciation Week! 🐾

This week, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey of the Baltimore Humane Society, which has been dedicated to protecting and caring for animals since 1927. What began as a dream by a compassionate woman, Elsie Seeger Barton, has blossomed into a thriving shelter that has helped countless animals and people.

Over the years, we have grown and adapted to meet the needs of our community by providing not only shelter but also a range of vital services. These services include spay/neuter programs, educational outreach, resources for pet owners, and more.

We believe that every animal deserves a loving home, and our team is dedicated to making that a reality. From heartwarming adoption stories to community outreach initiatives, we celebrate the bond between humans and animals every day.

As we celebrate National Animal Shelter & Rescue Appreciation Week, we continue on Elsie's legacy and invite you to join us in recognizing the hard work and dedication of our staff, volunteers, and supporters who make our mission possible.

Meet November's Volunteer of the Month: Jessica! 💜

Here is what our volunteer manager had to say about the lovely Jessica, "We can’t thank Jess enough for how much time and effort she puts into walking dogs for us here. She is here for most of the day on Saturdays and often comes in twice a week. There has been more than one occasion that she has come bearing gifts of sweets or refreshing drinks for staff and volunteers. Jess has been with us for less than a year but that didn’t stop her from moving from green to blue level as a dog walker and then taking it a step further and becoming a peer mentor so she could work with newer dog walking volunteers.

She comes up with some great ideas that have been implemented into the volunteer program and even reorganized our Dog Town 2 Training Packet for better flow and organization. If you have ever had a chance to chat with Jess, you know she is a compassionate, empathetic person who thrives on giving back. She has adopted two rescue dogs of her own and you can tell she would take more if she could!"

Jessica has totaled 214 hours with us so far! Talk about amazing. Thank you for all of your dedication, Jess! 🐾

“Volunteering as a dog walker is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. There are so many happy moments, and some tough ones too, but it’s all worth it to see these dogs go home. I’ve learned so much since I started and I love making connections with staff members and other volunteers in this combined effort to help the dogs.”

Did you know that 1 in 3 pets will become lost at some point in their life? Shockingly, 90% of those without proper identification never find their way back home. With animal shelters overflowing with stray animals, the importance of proper identification has never been more crucial.

As we approach time, it’s the perfect opportunity to check that your pet's microchip information is current. If you’ve moved recently or changed your phone number, make sure your contact details are up to date in the microchip registry. A quick check can make all the difference in reuniting you with your beloved pet if they become lost.

Hello there! I’m Macie, a five-year-old girl with a super chill vibe and some seriously awesome ears (just ask my friends at BHS – they love to tell me how cute they are)!

I’m housebroken, love to play, know some basic tricks, and am very eager to learn. I spend my time relaxing behind the welcome desk here, helping the staff with my calm, easy-going personality. I made some dog buddies here at the shelter, so I’d be open to meeting new dog friends too!

"Fourteen years ago Orion hid behind the dryer when we bought him home. He hid for a week or so only coming out to eat, drink and use his litter box. Now he prefers sleeping as close to me as possible. Not on me, but touching me. Thank you Baltimore Humane Society for taking such good care of Orion until he found us. He is forever home."

Meet Moose, a seven-year-old dog living his best life in foster!

This sweet boy is described as the perfect buddy—always happy to see you and ready to cuddle anytime, anywhere. Whether you're working, lounging, or just hanging out, Moose will happily keep you company with his head resting in your lap. He's a total couch potato, content to spend the day snuggled up by your side.

While Moose loves his lazy days, he also enjoys a bit of playtime! He's learning fetch and is more than happy to trade his toys for treats. Speaking of toys, his favorite is a blue plush shark, which he adorably fetches. It's his go-to comfort, and it's just the cutest thing!

Moose would do best as the only animal in the home, where he can soak up all the love and attention from his humans. If you're looking for a loyal, laid-back companion who'll bring joy to every moment, Moose is your guy!
