Calendula๐ŸŒผ is our flower being started today here at the flower farm.

Calendula is a herbaceous plant that can be grown as an annual or perennial and is in the daisy family. The seeds look like dried up worms๐Ÿชฑ ! The leaves an flowers are edible and the flower head/Petals can be used to infuse in oil or make into a salve to be used on the skin, from dry skin, rashes, burns etc. It has anti-inflammatory properties. The stem an leaves have a sticky coding, which make harvesting a little messy.

I love their look in a bouquet, they have a long vase life, i have had them last over 10 days. The plant is a cut an come again so will provide flowers all summer/fall. I will be secession planting 6 varieties to be maintained as perennials. As they become established I would like to explore harvesting to infuse in oil an maybe make a lipbalm along with using in bouquets.

Off course with anything you should try this herbaceous plant in moderation to ensure no allergic reactions to you personally. Remember some plants an flowers are toxic to humans an pets. You should always keep out of reach to be safe.

Under the grow lights they go!!๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒผ๐ŸŒฑ๐ŸŒฑ

First two 220 soil block trays of seeds started. Each soil block contains 20 spaces for a plant to grow. This method is great for space savings and starting those smaller seeds. Snapdragons and Stock. These seeds are so tiny, I brought inside for better light to make sure I'm efficient with my seed placement. Just the start follow along to watch as our grow space starts to be established with this year's crop.

Getting organized to get the 2023 flower season started!!

This weekend will be starting 4 kinds of snapdragons, they take 7/14 days to germinate an 110/120 days to maturity. Then every two weeks after this weekend will be starting more so we have continued blooms. This is called secession planting.

Will also be starting 4 stock, this is an early spring flower, that has a sweet fragrance the flowers are edible an can be used as a dye.

And we will be soaking ranunculus an anemone corms. These are funky looking, ranunculus looks like baby octopus, an anemones like acorn. You soak them in warm water for 10/12 hrs till they plump up, then they are ready to placed in a tray filled with soil, covered, placed in dark cool spot till they sprout.

Follow along will post the seed starting an germination process this weekend. Excited to get back at the flowers.

This is a pot of miniture daffodils that Calder bought me last year. After they bloomed an died back I cut them an placed the pot in a cool dark spot for over the summer. I was getting my grow space together an saw them starting to grow, a bit early.. I cleaned them up, freshening the soil and warm watered. They should bloom here shortly. Which will be a welcome sight of fresh blooms.

So reminder any potted plant that is a bulb will come back again. You just have to store either in its pot in a cool drak space or plant out in garden for nature to handle. The trick is not throwing out the pot thinking it's just dirt...lol

Did you know that sprinkling cinnamon on top of your house plants soil will help keep mold an fungus from forming.

I use this tip on my seedlings I start.

Saving the seeds from tonight dinner squash to start for 2023 viggie garden.

Do you harvest an save your own seeds? Either vegetable or flower? If so what, an how do store them and do get good germination? Interested in ways to cut cost on seed buying an not waste what seeds can be harvested.

Drop me your seed saving tips in the comments.
