This was my first season shooting an over under. Not only was it lighter & easier to carry but I took better shots. Only having two shells definitely forced me to take better quality shots. Which in return got me better dog work this season.

This season I shot a Beretta Silver Pigeon. I used 5 shot early in the year & 3 shot late in the season.

What shotgun do you take into the field and why?

Sileaux had an exceptional rookie hunting season. He found and pointed 8 species of wild gamebirds in four states. Sileaux hunted hard and covered ground well, and when it came to pointing, he was naturally steady to flush and very in-tune with his handler. This past year, in his second season, Sileaux excelled tracking and pinning prairie birds across North Dakota and Montana and made multiple 300 yard retrieves on crippled running roosters. Sileaux loves retrieving waterfowl and broke ice on his very first duck hunt, he has no issues with the cold windy North Dakota weather.

Sileaux received a maximum score of 112/112 in his NAVHDA Natural Ability test at only 6 months. He then went on to earn 192/204 and a prize 2 in his NAVHDA utility test at 15 months, both with a first-time trainer/handler. In 2023 Catrina ran him in utility again and recieved a max score 204 Prize one qualifying him for the 2024 Navhda Invitational in 2024. Sileaux has been a very biddable and driven dog that’s made training easy and fun. We easily finished him in the AKC conformation ring winning several majors in a row. Sileaux ran in the PNW Field Trial Circuit in the spring of 2023 and will be running in the GWPCA Horseback Nationals in Nebraska in the fall.

Sileaux is a natural retriever, he loves picking up marks just as much as the Labradors he trains with. Sileaux marks extremely well and doesn't give up on a hunt until he comes up with the bird. He has performed well in retrieving events and received his UKC hunting retriever (HR) title at 15 months old. This test required a double mark and blind on both land and water. Sileaux can go from running a controlled blind with complete focus on the handler to an independent duck search with just a switch of the command. Sileaux earned his first two finished retriever passes towards his hunting retriever champion (HRCH) title he will hopefully complete in 2024.

While Sileaux is a force to be reckoned with in the field he also has an amazing off switch. He loves accompanying his owner to the office where he snoozes on his dog bed and gets lots of pets and patiently entertains himself inside when the harsh North Dakota winter makes it tough to get out.

Sileaux ran and placed in his first Horseback field trials in fall of 2021 and we cannot wait to see how he performs in the future. His sire Duke is a powerful runner and won the Open GWPCA National championship in 2019. Like his sire, Sileaux has long legs and a strong muscular build and sweet friendly temperament.

Indy is the perfect dog to start a breeding program around. All of the stars aligned with this pup. Her natural ability was off the charts at only 8 weeks old. She was an intense pointer and retriever the first day we brought her home. She was not only pointing her birds from a distance but holding them and allowing us to walk out in front her for minutes at a time.

By the time 11 weeks rolled around she was jumping off 3 foot docks into ponds to retrieve bumpers. She shows no fear and has bulletproof confidence.

At 4 months old we ran her in her NAVHDA Natural Ability Test. She scored a 110/112, only missing 2 points in the tracking portion. We were very excited for her given her age and due to the fact it was 95 degrees with 30mph wind when she ran the tracking & water portion of the test.

In her first season she of hunting she did not disappoint. Showing phenomenal versatility both upland hunting and waterfowl hunting. At 6 months old on her first duck hunt she retrieved a 6 man limit of ducks in under 2 hours. We spent a large amount of our time hunting grouse out in the Ft. Pierre National grasslands. Day after day she showed her toughness and ability to find wild birds in big open landscapes. She was also able to get an opportunity to hunt quail in Kansas. She also had multiple hunts late in our SD season in sub zero temps where she handled the cold with excellence.

One of our favorite qualities about Indy is her ability to adapt to cover. One day she will hunt grouse at 300 yards, then the next day we will be guiding pheasants and she will quarter 80 yards wide and maintain staying 30-40 yards ahead of the group. She is truly the easiest dog were gotten to hunt behind.

What is Indy like in the house? Well she’s sleeping next to me as I type this. Indy is calm in the house and loves to play with her toys. Her biggest problem is she’s an absolute cuddle bug & people pleaser. One of Indys favorite thing to do when she isn’t hunting is going on trail runs with my wife & I.
