Have you ever noticed how when you move something to a new place in the arena, or the object is positioned differently around the barn that your horse will often act like they've never seen it before? Turns out, in their minds, they haven't.

Understanding that horses view different sides of objects as entirely new means we can desensitize them to everyday objects from all angles for better safety and welfare, the researcher says.

Fantastic illustration of lateral movements!

Fantastic illustration of lateral movements!

To develop the horse symmetrically in body and limbs you can use gymnastic exercises.

*** CORNERSTONES ***

The core of the gymnastic exercises consists of the circle, shoulder-in and haunches-in. All the other exercises are derived from these cornerstones.

🐴 The circle is used to develop the Lateral bending of the body and spine, the Forward down tendency of the head and neck and the Stepping under the center of mass of the inside hind leg (LFS).

🐴 Once the inside hind leg can step under, this hind leg can also start to take weight. To do so we use the shoulder-in and counter-shoulder-in. These exercises are designed to school the hind leg in function of the inside hind leg. As a result of taking the weight, the horse will bend the inside hind leg more and free the outside shoulder.

🐴 Once the horse can bend the hind leg as an inside hind leg, we can also start to school the hind leg as an outside hind leg. To do so we use first the haunches-in (travers) and later on the renvers. In the renvers the horse can lean less against the wall/fence with his shoulder, so it's a bit more difficult than the travers, but as a result he really supports himself with his hind legs.

*** ALL EXERCISES ARE RELATED ***

All exercises relate to one another and differ slightly:

🐎 The only difference between shoulder-in and counter-shoulder in is the position of the fence/wall. The same applies to the haunches-in (travers) and the renvers, also there the only difference is the position of the wall.

🐎 The difference between shoulder-in and renvers is the bending in the spine, which is the opposite. In these exercises the same hind leg has the opposite function ('inside' in shoulder-in, 'outside' in renvers). The same applies to counter shoulder-in and the haunches in.

🐎 The half pass is 'just' a haunches-in over the diagonal, and the pirouette is 'just' a haunches-in on a small circle. Both half-pass and pirouette require support of both the inside as the outside hind leg. Therefore in both exercises the shoulders must lead to be able to keep the center of mass in front of the direction of the hind legs, only then both hind legs can support the weight. So both the half pass and pirouette also relate to the shoulder-in.

*** NUMBER OF TRACKS AND DEGREE OF BENDING ***

Now all exercises can be done on 3 or 4 tracks, or 2,5 tracks or 3,75 or 3,99 ;) and your horse can have more or less bend in his spine. Now there is no 'perfect' number and the exact degree doesn't matter. What matters in ST is that you choose the number of tracks and degree of bending where your horse can support his body and center of mass best with both hind legs. And that depends on the conformation of your horse: if he has a long back or a shorter one, if he has long legs, or shorter ones, if he has a long neck or a short one. So choose the degree of bending and number of tracks where your horse can move in optimal balance and with most quality.

*** HOW TO DEVELOP THESE EXERCISES? ***

First start the circle, then after a few training sessions add the shoulder-in, and the moment the the horse can do this exercise for 66,6% of quality, add the haunches-in. From there you can start practising the variations.

**** HOW TO DEVELOP THE HORSE EQUALLY? ***

To develop a horse equally in body and limbs all exercises need to be done to the right and to the left (or as they say in English: on the right rein and on the left rein).

When doing these exercises there will always be an 'easy' side and a difficult side. To develop the horse equally, do the 'difficult' side a bit more often and it's also an idea to start with the 'difficult' side and to end with the 'difficult side'.

The moment the horse starts to feel more equal, switch to train the exercises 50-50.

I think we are all still recovering from another crazy horse show weekend. We could not have asked for more beautiful weather for this weekend's Stacey Berry Memorial Show at Franktown Meadows, or the SNHSA show at Brownlee Equestrian. We took 3 horse/rider combinations to Franktown, and everyone had major success. Kelsey and Lonnie both came home with 2 qualifying scores in First Level, as well as a 68+ and 69+ in their tests! Kelsey was 2nd, and Lonnie 3rd in First Level Test 2, and Lonnie won her 1st Level test 1 with a personal best score! Anastasia stepped up from Intro to Training Level, and also earned a qualifying score and the win in Training 1! She also brought home scores in the 70's in her Intro Level Tests, and a score of "9" on her halt!

Meanwhile, Chanlee coached all the Hunter and Equitation riders at Brownlee, where everyone finished in the top 3 in all their classes with incredible rounds all around. Later in the afternoon the Jumpers came out to play, bringing home top ribbons from the Kindergarten through the Level 3's. Huge congratulations to all my riders, Huge Thank-You to Chanlee for sticking with some insane hours and making sure everyone was successful and prepared. Now, to finish the last of the preparations for Let's Show Halloween! Sacramento, here we come!

Another beautiful day at the MVF SNHSA show today! We couldn't have asked for a better day. With 11 horses and 12 riders at the show there was never a free moment, but all of our horses and riders had the most amazing, fun and successful day! Congratulations to Ashley on winning all 3 of her classes today in the Special and Modified Ch/AA Hunters! And to Landess and for winning all 3 of their Hunter and Equitation classes as well! brought home her first ever blue ribbon today with a clean, relaxed round in the Kindergarten Jumpers. Kelsey and Jack discovered a whole new rhythm over fences and were rewarded with 4 2nds and a 6th! Lonnie and Jig came home with a 4th in Puddle Jumpers, and Jig also won a PreTraining Jumper class! Jenna and Boom brought home a blue in Pre Training as well as a win in Level 1 with a blazing fast, clean and balanced jump off! Nicole and Stella then took the win in the Low Ch/AA Jumpers! Suzanne and Scout joined us for the first time this year, with solid rounds and ribbons. Meredith and her horse Colby who are brand new to our team hung in there all day, bringing home ribbons in every one if there classes in jumpers, hunters and eq! KT and Blue continued their season with quiet balanced rounds and a win in the Cloverleaf Medal, Hucklebear won his undersaddle, and came home with ribbons in both his crossrail classes. And Jolie finished second in both of her equitation classes! Plus many, many more ribbons I lost track of. Congratulations to everyone!

What a weekend! The SNHSA Jumper Benefit show was a blast, and I couldn't be happier with how all my horses and riders stepped up to the plate! Lonnie, Kelsey, Ashley, Jolie, Jenna, Nicole, Rachel, KT, and Chanlee all rode amazing and brought home ribbons including many blues! Sunday morning Nicole and Jenna teamed up for the SNHSA Jr/Am Challenge Cup, and their team, "The Bays Buy In" brought home the win, and for the second year in a row the title stays with a Pair Of Aces Stables team!

Despite the smoke we did our best to support the Meadowview Farms SNHSA show this weekend. As always the venue, footing and the jumps were beautiful, and while we scratched our over fences classes, we did stay and play in some Eq Flat and Under Saddle classes. Congratulations to Ally and Landess bringing home Blue Ribbons!

**SOLD** Noble Allience, aka "Charlie", a 2009 Bay Arabian Gelding. He sticks at a true 15.1 1/2", and has been in full, professional training with us at Pair of Aces Stables since Nov. 2017. This boy is a quiet ride, goes in a rubber snaffle and is not hot or over reactive to the leg. This gentleman can do it all. He really enjoys jumping, never gets quick to the fences and jumps from any distance over any jump without hesitation. He has correct dressage basics and has done one show at Training Level, earning scores in the mid-60's his first time out! He also has trail experience, and experience in hunter/jumper shows. He would be an ideal partner for someone looking to excel in the Arabian Sporthorse world, or someone who would enjoy doing a little bit of everything, including eventing! He is sound, UTD on everything, and is ready to walk into the show ring!
