Commands to teach your hiking/adventure pup:
1) Solid (very solid!) Recall:
- This is usually the “come” command and remember to create HIGH value for this word when teaching it. Most people want to get complacent after a few weeks but it’s very important to come back to refreshing this command often and rewarding the recall always! If you’re going off-leash, form habit of coming back into you anytime you see another dog or person in the area. Remember (I know it’s hard to believe!) not everyone will love interactions with your dog.
2) Loose-Leash walking:
- There are leash laws and I find that most people don’t want to put their dogs on a leash because they don’t enjoy being pulled around. Respect the law and other dog/owners out there who have their dogs on a leash. Again, not every dog is friendly and this is to protect you AND your dog. Teach your dog good leash manners at home and around the neighborhood. Try not to think “my dog pulls on leash!” Instead, say “my dog chooses to run ahead of me, how can I make it valuable for them to stay next to me?”
3) Sit/Stay:
- There may be times where you have to share the trail and move over. Asking your dog to sit/stay can help when room gets a bit tight. Asking your dog to move up on a hill or to the side and wait for other dogs, bikes, joggers to pass can be a great help to demo your trail manners.

Teaching your dog how to heel in new environments is a great way to set your walks up for success
You can try these exercises with dogs of any age. It’s never too early to teach! 🐕
I always love to give the example that I was teaching my dog, Quest, to “heel” at only 10 weeks old. During that time we also worked on sit, down, place, come, roll-over, wave, weave, confidence building exercises and proper play!
Don’t be afraid to introduce your puppy to new commands. Keep it age appropriate and only spend 5-10 mins working on it 🐶

Whether you’re looking to teach your dog how to walk on a leash well or looking to just add more distractions to your training, this group class will be fun for anyone looking to learn more about “heel” and loose-leash walking. This will be the sole focus of this group class.
Class starts on March 29th at 6pm we will do 5 consecutive weeks of group class with the last class ending on April 26th (weather permitting). Lessons will be in Reno. Exact location is TBD. Each class will last approximately one-hour. Spots are extremely limited as to not overcrowd the group. If there’s enough interest of people signing up, I’m open to starting another “heel” group class on a different day so everyone can get a chance to learn this before summer.
Do not be concerned if your dog is reactive or aggressive; everyone is welcome to come. For safety purposes I will only allow one dog per handler. It is strongly encouraged that your dog has a treat or toy drive.

Touching up on some leash training with this sweet girl🐶 You can spend time taking short cuts or you can spend time teaching your dog and having fun. What do you think is going to last longer? I have absolutely no issue with using different training tools to enhance training and give clients better control over their dogs. Spend time teaching your dogs what you want first though. Skip the basics and it’ll show in your training eventually. Challenge for you this week: Say “heel” to your dog. Are they able to find the position on their own without help from you?

Louie has had a rough start in life but thanks to a kind soul in Los Angeles he was taken in and then adopted out to a wonderful home here in Reno.He is the definition of a neglected dog who was not socialized to the world and has attachment disorders.We’re going to work on his confidence and train him so we have a way to communicate with him. I had to figure out what works for Louie and what doesn’t. It’s really important to keep giving 100% even when your dog doesn’t care. Not everyone knows how to do that and that’s why I’m here. It’s ok to push your dogs boundaries in a safe, healthy way and slowly build on it. Keep offering food. Keep offering play. Keep reassuring your dog that you’re a safe place. Keep boundaries around what’s acceptable behavior and what’s not. Things to look for: I use a lot of hand motions with my cues and that helps my dogs understand what I’m asking them to do. There are commands where I don’t use my hands sometimes and I will create different words for different positions (sit, down, heel left/right/middle, stand, etc).
