Some of the ranunculus took a little bit of a beating from the wind over the weekend when we were in Death Valley. One of the tunnels front opening opened up a little exposing some of the plant babies, and they were looking pretty sad, but I gave them a good watering yesterday and wrapped them back up in the tunnel and they should bounce back just fine! If anything I have learned growing ranunculus over winter the last few years, they are quite hardy.

Phew, this windy lately is something else. This winter has been the driest, windiest winter I can remember in the 12 years I’ve lived here!

This winter has been rough. Give yourself all the grace. Spring is here in 44 days.

Missing the buzz of the bees 🐝 , but we got our first snow of winter!! ❄️ FINALLY. Driving home last evening in the snow after a friends birthday gathering everyone out on the roads was driving nice and slow, and I think we were all soaking it in together that it finally felt like true winter. It’s 6:30am and I just got back inside from checking on the ranunculus tunnels, there is nothing better than early dawn after snow. It’s so quiet and still and perfect! 🤍 Hope everyone enjoys the snow day! ❄️❄️❄️

Reno is experiencing a dry winter, with around just 1” reported of precipitation over the last 2 months and no precipitation predicted for the 10-day forecast. Daytime temps continue to be in the 40s and above, so get ready to water your trees & gardens! 🌱

Even in the colder months, your plants (perennials, shrubs, trees, roses, etc) still need some love! If there’s no snow or rain, and it’s been dry like it’s been, plants can suffer winter drought. Take a moment to check the soil around your plants. Try to check during the warmest part of the day when the ground thaws out some. If it feels pretty dry then supplemental watering is needed.

Here’s the trick:
💦Water during the warmest part of the day when it’s above 40 and when the sun is out, so the water can soak in before freezing again.
💦Don’t overdo it—just enough of a sprinkle to keep the soil slightly moist
💦Be mindful of timing, and don’t water when the ground is frozen solid as this can potentially damage roots.
