Reno is experiencing a dry winter, with around just 1” reported of precipitation over the last 2 months and no precipitation predicted for the 10-day forecast. Daytime temps continue to be in the 40s and above, so get ready to water your trees & gardens! 🌱

Even in the colder months, your plants (perennials, shrubs, trees, roses, etc) still need some love! If there’s no snow or rain, and it’s been dry like it’s been, plants can suffer winter drought. Take a moment to check the soil around your plants. Try to check during the warmest part of the day when the ground thaws out some. If it feels pretty dry then supplemental watering is needed.

Here’s the trick:
💦Water during the warmest part of the day when it’s above 40 and when the sun is out, so the water can soak in before freezing again.
💦Don’t overdo it—just enough of a sprinkle to keep the soil slightly moist
💦Be mindful of timing, and don’t water when the ground is frozen solid as this can potentially damage roots.

It’s 17 degrees this AM, is winter finally on its way? When will we get snow in the valley? This winter has been very warm with minimal precipitation in the form of rain. It makes me think we are in for a hot hot hot summer ☀️ Reno is the fastest warming city in the US. While on average most cities have warmed at least 2 degrees since 1970, Reno’s summer temps increased close to 8 degrees. Yikes 😳

Let’s hope we can still have a decent winter! ❄️

We have a bunch of new followers lately (thank you so much for joining us!) so I thought I’d say a little hello and intro to 🌸

Casa Blanca Flower Farm is an urban flower farm located in central Reno. 2025 is our 4th year growing flowers for our local Reno-Tahoe community! It’s just me, Shannon, and my husband, Mark, and our two cats, Alta and Toquima, who make appearances in my stories a lot. We both work full-time in our careers as archaeologists, in addition to . We grow a wide variety of flowers in our yard which is very small!! People are often amazed at the amount and different types of flowers that we grow, cut and bring to the every summer given our tiny growing space, but basically every square inch has flowers growing. We have no lawn (or barely space to move around 🤣), but it is quite spectacular in August when everything is in full growth and there are thousands of pollinators fluttering about!

I really really really love flowers, talking about them, researching them, growing them, and most of all sharing them with you. 💐

I get asked what my favorite flower is sometimes. I don’t have a favorite! I have many favorites, and it depends on the season. But a few of our customers favorites that we grow have been, ranunculus, dahlias, lisianthus, heirloom mums, cosmos, and giant marigolds.
