How can we encourage our dogs to actively engage with quarry in sports like Barn Hunt, Earthdog, or Trailing? One fun way is to create puzzle games similar to Busy Box enrichment, which get dogs thinking and problem-solving to reach the quarry box. We can use different layers and materials, and sometimes add treats along the way. Just like Busy Boxes, we start with easy challenges and gradually increase the difficulty. Most importantly, we make sure the puzzles are safe for both our dogs and the quarry!
Finnr, the Border Terrier, is working on a simple puzzle: a cardboard box inside a bigger box. First, he had to push the larger box off, then use his skills (pushing, digging, biting, or tearing) to find his quarry. At first, he was a little unsure—wondering if this was a "legal" game or a set-up. But after engaging with his humans for a bit, he dove in, and with each step, his confidence and determination grew.
The important thing is not what he chooses to do, but that he's making the choice and solving the puzzle on his own. Finnr particularly loved shredding, and as this session went on, we were able to transfer this new game into the rat sports he participates in. The instinct, interest, and desire were there; he just needed the chance to express it in a way that was reinforcing to him.

Where in the world is Effin? This afternoon, Coach Liz, Carol and Effin hopped on the Uber Boat and road it up the Thames to Tower Bridge. Manners and confidence were a must on the fast moving and very crowded ferry. The views were fantastic and we were so excited to see the Tower Bridge we hopped off there and did all sorts of cool things before hopping on a train and heading back to eat on an outdoor patio. Yup! All dog friendly and filled with adventure. Here's Effin trotting off the Uber Boat!
