Introducing Kobe, a very young intact male, surrendered to the Mariposa County Shelter, one day after he was bought off of Craig’s List. The new owner said that Kobe bit him while he was wrestling with Kobe, and he didn’t want to keep him. Skin was broken, so Kobe was put into mandatory quarantine, as there was no proof of a rabies vaccination. The MCS staff thought something was amiss with the story and the owner, as Kobe seemed very sweet during the days of his quarantine. MCS is a high kill shelter, without a neutering clinic, so he could not be directly rehomed, therefore he’d be euthanized. Thankfully, MCS staff reached out to an all breed rescue called Friends of the Animal Community in Sonora, that brought him to safety and contacted us. We will be picking him up this week, bringing him up to date with all vaccinations and getting him neutered. Given that we have yet to assess him (but are told that he is “a sweetheart” and wags his tail at other dogs) we are hopeful that he will thrive with an experienced Shiba owner. His ideal home will not have young children and if there is another dog, it should be a female. If you are interested in meeting or fostering this cutie, please send us a PM. The NNSR Adoption application form can be found at www.myshibainu.com

Please welcome Zumi (pronounced Zoo-mi) to the NNSR family. She was found as a stray in Stockton in February. A wonderful family took her until she could be reunited with her family. But, after 3 months, Zumi needs a furever home. She’s young, sweet and speedy. If anyone recognizes her, please PM us. If no owner can be verified, she is up for adoption, once she’s been seen by a vet, has had her health assessed, brought up to date with vaccinations and spayed.

It’s Leap Day on Leap Year 2024! While I’m not able to leap for joy, yet, look at me on my 10 minute walk…with my foster sister! Thanks to everyone who has contributed to helping me on my journey. I am truly a Shiba reborn! NNSR funded my surgery and still needs donations to help other Shibas in need. Will you please share this page so that other people see my progress and maybe help fund other Shibas in need? Thank you! xoMichi

Michi returned to the vet to have her staples removed. She was greeted by the ENTIRE team at Pacific & Santa Cruz Vet Specialists like a hero returning from combat. Which, in a way she is, after her two broken legs. Dr. Kalff was thrilled with her progress and expects her to make a full recovery! We are only at about 30% of our $10,000 goal for funding her surgery, so any and all donations are gratefully received AND 100% tax deductible, as we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue. Thanks to everyone cheering on this resilient girl as she continues to recover!

Great news about Michi! She came through surgery like a champ! Dr. Kalff is very happy with the results! They'll keep her at the "Spa" until she can support herself with her two hind legs. Hopefully she'll be going home to her foster in the next day or so.

And now we begin our "Mission4Michi" fundraiser. We would be so grateful for any donation. As we are a 501(c)(3) organization, your employer may be able to match your donation! Donations can be made by directly clicking here:

01/28/2024

Hello Fellow Shiba Lovers! It’s been about a year since we lost our Doggie DayCare lease and could no longer accept Shibas into our rescue. We still are a 501(c)(3), working to rehome Shibas. It’s just that it’s usually a direct rehoming, rather than a Shiba coming to stay at NNSR while looking for a new home. However, there are exceptions. Please welcome Michi!

Michi, a 13 month old B&T Shiba girl ended up in Santa Clara County's Animal Control shelter having escaped her owner, twice in two weeks. The second time, she was hit by a car, and suffered two broken legs. The shelter stabilized her, but the owner did not have the funds required to repair her legs. Two members of the SFNC who had been watching her saga notified us that the owner would surrender her to us and they would foster if we would pull her and fund a portion of her surgical expenses. So, we picked her up in San Martin and took her straight to a vet in Aptos, near where the foster lives.

Looking at her tibia and femur fractures, Dr. Kalff gave her an excellent prognosis of a complete recovery, based upon her youth, the locations of the breaks and how quickly we could get her into surgery. The surgical estimate was between $9,000 & $11,000. After we caught our breath, we signed the estimate and Michi checked into the Pacific & Santa Cruz Veterinary Specialist’s ICU was scheduled for surgery the next day. In recent years, NNSR has helped Kibo with her shattered front leg and Sadie with her luxating patellas, thanks to your generous contributions to their fundraiser. We hope you are able to do the same for this sweet girl! Donations can be made by directly clicking here:

Today we said goodbye to our Rosie for the last time. Rosie came to live with Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue back in 2012 and has been our companion and cuddle girl all these years. She loved the boys, Charlie and Kobe were the lives of her life and she never passed on an opportunity to go in the motorhome or for a car ride. She list her eye to glaucoma a few.years back and now today we say goodbye. She will live in our hearts and the hearts of everyone who met her. We love you Rosie and already miss you from the bottom of our hearts.

While we have closed our rescue, due to circumstances outside of our control, we will still passionately advocate for Shibas in need.Thank you to everyone for your support throughout the past 20+ years.
Please meet Genki, a four year old boy who needs a new home. He has early onset glaucoma, which is treatable with consistent eye drops. His owner is a full-time student, and doesn’t have the time to commit to Genki’s treatment. You have all been so supportive as we’ve made the decision to close our rescue, we hope you will continue to help us find needy Shibas their happy furever after.

I wanted to post an update to all of you following NNSR. First of all, we have had an amazing response to all 4 posts. There have been some amazing comments of support and of course those people who felt the need to be critical. Most importantly, we have.more than made our goal in donations for Sadie and I will be meeting with her surgeon on Tuesday to set the next surgery. I am so grateful to all of you and your amazing donations. Please forgive me if I miss you individually as I go through and send out thank you's. Now, as an update, Foxy made the long trip to Washington and is very loved in her new furrever home. The next 3 pictures are showing what a very lucky boy Junior is in his new furrever home with Anita. In fact, I am really jealous that he has his own private dog park to plan in every day, he is truly one lucky pup! Sadie is still with us as we start looking at the applications for her. She is more of a challenge as she still requires a surgery followed by weekly Physical Therapy, it is a little harder finding that committed person but I do have a few good prospects. Thank you all, each and every one of you, for your continued support and donations. It is truly an amazing sense of gratitude I have for each and everyone of you.

My name is Junior. I was just brought in to Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue this morning. My story is that my original owner has issues with addiction and was unable to care for me. I was given to a family but it didn't work out and they couldn't keep me for long term. I am about 3-5 years old and am neutered. So far I have been on my best behavior, I have not tried fighting with the other dogs here and I have been very sweet. I would love to find the right person to come get me and make me their furrever companion and I promise to be loyal for the rest of my life. If you are interested in meeting and adopting me, please contact Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue at www.myshibainu.com. My adoption fee is to be determined!

12/26/2022

Hi My name is Sadie. I was born with a congenital knee issue that worsened as I got older. My owners were unable to get me the care that I needed as I required both knees to be replaced. I have been with Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue for about 2 years now and they were able to raise the monies for the surgeries, well, almost all of it. I had my first surgery about 4 weeks ago and I am doing really good. I go to therapy once a week and work on my exercises at home. I am going to have the second knee done here in the next 2 to 3 weeks but the costs have been a little more than anticipated and Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue is about $1800 short. I would really appreciate if anyone is able to donate one more time to Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue and help them meet the costs of my surgery. Also, if any of you live in Reno and could provide me a home while I recover, I would really appreciate that help as well. As you are aware, A Doggies Dream is closing on Friday and, although the owners will take me to their home, it isn't an ideal situation as they already have several sanctuary dogs and stairs and, well, I need a little more attention. I will be up for adoption once the next surgery has been completed and I have made a full recovery. Hey, maybe you would like to adopt me now and help me through the next surgery and therapy. If you are interested, I am a very sweet girl and full of love and soon full of activity. Please contact Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue and talk to them about giving me a chance to love you and be your special family member. For donations, they will accept venmo, paypal and checks! Please go to myshibainu.com.

12/26/2022

My name is Foxy and I have been with Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue for the past 2 years. I developed really bad glaucoma and had to have both my eyes removed. I am about 9 years old and I am a very sweet girl. I have learned to navigate the doggy daycare but now that they are being forced to close their doors, I have no where to go. The owners of A Doggies Dream and founders of Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue will take me to their home but it isn't ideal as they have several dogs already and there are stairs. I need to be in a situation where there are no stairs inside or outside of the home. Unfortunately, because I can't see, I am not very well potty trained anymore as I don't always know if I am inside or outside, but I do try to be a good girl. I am looking for a home that will love me and let me love them and be patient with my shortcomings. I need to be alone as I get scared if other dogs come up behind me and want to sniff and greet. I think I could learn to live with another dog or cat as long as they weren't too rambunctious. If you think you would be able to take me in, please contact Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue. A Doggies Dream closes officially on the 31st. I look forward to meeting my new furrever home!

12/26/2022

It is with deep emotion that we make this announcement. After much deliberation we have made the decision to close the Northern Nevada Shiba Rescue. Recently, we lost our lease at the doggy daycare and will be closing A Doggies Dream as of 12/31/22, our landlords have decided they would like to pursue other options with our space. Because of that, we have nowhere we can house the rescues while we get them the medical care and rehab they may need. Additionally, the costs of medical treatments and services have become so high that our costs way exceed the reasonable rates for adoption fees. Unfortunately, we did not win the lotto and our personal finances cannot support the need. And finally, there are personal and family issues that have brought us to this very difficult decision. It is with great sadness that we announce this as we have been involved with the Shiba community doing rescue since 2001. Over the years we have had the great pleasure of working with 100s of Shiba's in need, even kept a few over the years that were not suitable for adoption. We have met and worked with so many wonderful people and at this time would like to sincerely thank Patricia Hoppe and Kathy Oppenheimer for their work and dedication to our cause. They have been amazing to work with and we will be forever grateful and thankful for their help. I cannot forget to thank Dr. Jody Hicks, first with A Plus Animal Hospital and now with Aspen Animal Wellness in Reno. She has been our official Vet for over 15 years. I cannot begin to list all of the many people who have contributed to our organization over the past 20+ years nor can I thank them enough. It has been our honor to have been a part of this for so long and Vic and I will always be grateful to the support we have received over the years. We do have 3 final requests for your assistance and I will post them each separately with their stories. Again, thank you for being an important part of our lives for the past 20 years.

We are so happy to announce that Satochi has a furever home. We initially thought he’d be best in a single dog home, but a wonderful woman with a sweet Shiba girl and LOTS of experience with dog behaviors asked us to consider her for adopting Satochi. She came to Reno so that she and her Shiba girl, Lulu, could meet. As they say in the movies, the rest is history. Thank you, Joanne, for opening your heart! xoxo

11/29/2022

We hope everyone enjoyed the Thanksgiving Howlidays with their loved ones…whether they be 2 or 4-pawed! Black Friday and Cyber Monday combine with Cyber Week, which, in reality, lasts much longer than 7 days! So in that spirit, we ask our generous NNSR Shiba families and followers to think of us tomorrow, 11/29/22, on the day known as Giving Tuesday. If tomorrow isn’t a good day for a donation to NNSR, we are happy to extend Giving Tuesday to Giving DECEMBER!! We need donations of two kinds… financial and of the heart.

Our financial post…Remember Sadie, the sweet young girl, surrendered to be euthanized because of severe subluxation of the patella, bilateral, hind legs, with severe deformity requiring complete reconstruction? San Francisco Animal Control recognized what a beautiful spirit she had, and asked us to bring her into rescue, which we did during the pandemic.

It's taken us a long time to raise the funds required for the pre-op CT Scans, identify the orthopedic consultations and strategies for her surgery. Thanks to many donors, small & large, Sadie finally had her first surgery the week before Thanksgiving. She got through surgery like a champ, and is now on crate confinement as she heals. We are also providing extensive physical therapy to speed her recovery and and strengthen her new leg muscles, so she can have her 2nd knee replaced in 2023.

We would be grateful for any amount you could donate on “Giving Tuesday” tomorrow, and be even more appreciative of donations during Giving DECEMBER! NNSR is a 501c3 non-profit, so all donations are 100% tax-deductible. Donations can be made via:

Introducing Satochi. This sweet boy is an owner surrender, following the divorce of his huparents. He’d been with his dad in Florida since he was a puppy and moved with him into a shared home in Stockton. Unfortunately, there was another established dog in the house and they did not get along. Satochi was moved outside into a small dog run. His barking for attention was a nuisance for the neighbors. So, he came to us for rehoming. We think he’s about 8, and is very loyal and friendly oone-on-one. He does not like other dogs, so we are asking that he be the only dog in the household. He’s neutered, UTD on all shots. Since he’s been through a rough time, he’d be best with a person with previous Shiba experience and has the love to help him recover his confidence. Please PM us if you’d like to have a cozy, sweetheart of a Shiba with you as we begin the Holiday season.

Hi everyone, I see a lot of interest in Satochi, if you would like to be considered I need you to go to our website and complete an application. www.myshibainu.com Thanks!

Please meet sweet Rex! He's a cuddly, almost one year young pup who, through no fault of his own, needs to be rehomed. He was purchased on impulse at a pet store in Idaho about 9 months ago.

He has great manners, is house and crate trained, good on leash, treat motivated and very good with young kids.

Unfortunately, his humans live in the basement of a house with their two young kids. The family upstairs has a Chihuahua that is territorial and aggressive when Rex comes up with the family for dinner. As a result, when the family goes upstairs to eat, Rex stays down in the basement and gets destructive, which is causing stress for his family. However, he is fine when his family leaves to run errands and such. And recently, his humom has begun a work at home job, in addition to caring for her young children. It is hard to give him up, but she wants the best for him and knows he deserves a fuller life.

While sweet, Rex has not been fully trained or well socialized, so introductions to friendly dogs and training needs to be a part of his new life.

If anyone has a place in their heart and home to give this cute boy a furever home, please PM us.

Hello! My name is Hiro. I’m about
5 1/2 and am looking for a new home. I’ve been with my people since I was a pup. But with Covid, things have changed. There are several more people living with me who make lots of noise and startle me. I’ve become very agitated when people and deliveries show up. This agitation is causing more stress for me and for my family. My hufather loves me but knows that’s I deserve a calmer life.

I’ll be coming to NNSR in the next few days…it would be great if there is a quiet house that can foster me as I search for my furever home. Please PM NNSR if you think you can help me during the howlidaze!

I don't know who our benefactor is, but today, NNSR received a sizeable donation that puts us where we need to be to start the surgeries for this sweet girl. Sadie has been with us over a year now and today we have enough money to finally start the process and get Sadie on her way to her normal and active life. She will see the surgeon on 11/10/21 and if all goes well, we will be able to get the first surgery done before Christmas. Once she sees the surgeon, then we will schedule the CT scans and then know the extent of the surgical need. Sadie is a very sweet girl who deserves a chance at a normal life with a loving furrever home. We will post regularly on her journey! And to our anonymous benefactor. Words cannot express the gratitude in all our hearts here at NNSR!! Thank you!!
