I have met many great dogs and made wonderful friends through K9 Wellness Center. I am so grateful for the opportunity to be of service and use my skills as a physical therapist to help pets (and their people), and for the support and trust of the local veterinary community for the past 25 years.
Now it is time for a change and the center is closing at the end of August. For those wondering: what will you do next? I will continue to see current clients that I can help with in-home visits, I will continue working with Nevada Equine Assisted Therapy, and I will help out at Nevada Marketplace through the holiday season. So, I will not be sitting on the couch eating bon-bons in "retirement" 😁.

For my "horsey" friends.....please consider the effect of wildfire smoke on your horse not only during exposure
(like today in Reno) but for several weeks afterwards.

Fires throughout California and the western United States in recent years have exposed humans and horses to unhealthy air containing wildfire smoke and particulates.

Interesting research from "across the pond" on the recovery of dogs with IVDD - without surgery!

Over the past couple of years, some of you may have heard of the Cambridge Vet School non-surgical IVDD study. The results have just been published. It’s a great write-up and quite groundbreaking!

Dogs unable to walk due to disc extrusion (IVDD) were cared for WITHOUT surgery. They had an MRI scan at the start of the study and another MRI scan after 12 weeks. These scans helped to make the diagnosis, and they also showed how compressed (squashed) the spinal cord was in each case.

The big questions were:
❓How many of these dogs would start walking again without having had surgery?
❓How compressed was each dog’s spinal cord at the start of the study?
❓Were they still just as compressed at the end of the study, 12 weeks later?

Results were interesting and included the following:
✅Out of the dogs that had deep pain sensation, NEARLY ALL of them (49 of 51 dogs, 96%) started walking again within 12 weeks. Most of them walked much sooner than this.
✅Out of those with NO deep pain sensation, nearly half of them (10 of 21 dogs, 48%) started walking again within 12 weeks. That’s WITHOUT surgery.
✅Spinal cord compression reduced in some dogs over the 12 week study period. That’s despite not having had surgery to remove the disc material that caused this compression.
✅Many dogs started walking again despite the fact that their spinal cord was still compressed, ie ‘Recovery was not dependent on the resolution of compression’

💛The authors concluded that if spinal surgery isn’t possible as it’s not available in the area or is too expensive, non-surgical management is a valid alternative.

There’s plenty of detail in the write-up, and it’s free for all to read or download via this link: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/pdf/10.1111/jvim.17149

Monday musings.....

Zoetis published this guide to increasing activity/exercise to hopefully prevent/minimize over-use injuries for dogs taking Librela injections. However, it does not seem that pet owners are being given this information, along with information on what side effects to watch for.
Remember, your dog is probably deconditioned, and still has arthritis but now is not feeling as much pain so he/she likely to "over-do it". In all 3 stages, warns against starting new high impact activities such as fetch and rough play (which can result in new injuries such as torn ligaments and tendons).

Researchers at the University of California, Davis, have updated their guidelines on when to neuter 40 popular dog varieties by breed and s*x. Their recent paper in Frontiers in Veterinary Science adds five breeds to a line of research that began in 2013 with a study that suggested that early neuter...

“Every Time”

Every time you say vets are money grubbing or ‘too expensive’ or just in it for the money,

Every time you decline all diagnostics, yet demand to know “what’s wrong with my pet”,

Every time at a social function or other completely inappropriate place you find out that someone is a vet you ask them for free advice about your animal,

Every time you feel justified posting a s&^**y practice or vet review when everything was done according to the standard of care but your pet died anyway,

Every time YOUR lack of preventative care resulted in your pet’s early death, yet you blame the veterinarian,

Every time she gets in early and stays late and works an 80-hour week because your pet that had been ill for days suddenly becomes an emergency at 5pm on a Friday, and you demand to be seen, claiming these heartless vets won’t treat your baby,

Every time someone complains about the cost of veterinary care, comparing human medicine and insurance subsidies to pet ownership,

Every time someone doesn’t pay their bill and thinks they are entitled not to because pet ownership is their “right”,

Every time someone walks in to a clinic and threatens to “sue your ass if you make one mistake with my baby”,

Every time a graduate vet looks at the hundreds of thousands of dollars in crippling debt and listens to clients driving Mercedes and BMWs complain about the cost of a spay using good anesthetic care and adequate pain management,

Every time – You are part of the problem.

The problem is su***de in veterinarians. Most of us went to veterinary school because we care. We have a calling to care, but there is a dark and expensive cost to compassion.

Think before you act or speak.
