a month or so ago i came across this man on a Reno Community page. he was trying to find some side work to save up some money to get this cat to a vet -- but it was an urgent situation and there really wasn't time for him to try to save the money. Options saw this cat the next morning and they took wonderful care of him in an urgent situation. its time to help pay the bill. please donate if you can -- or if not, share in case someone you know could donate. thank you!

i have said i wasn't in it to win it -- but Olivia and Ozzy have both dropped to third place. its okay for someone else to be on the Options wall. Abby, Cory and Hunter all have their place and Abby raised a LOT of money for the clinic. But now they need more to be able to help community pets. Please go take a look and vote for someone to get Options a little closer to their goal!!!

if you can help find these kitties a forever home, please help!!!! ringworm isn't a death sentence!!

Yesterday was one of THOSE days.

THOSE days that no one likes to see or talk about because nobody wants to be a Debbie Downer on social media.

But to be honest, “those” days happen often in rescue. At least over here.

The weight of the world is constantly on your shoulders then the universe adds one more teeny-tiny weight,
and BAM! This is what you look like.

Who would ever guess that a positive ringworm test could send somebody into a complete state of hysteria?

Seems silly, since ringworm is just a pesky fungus that is treatable and non-life threatening.

But when you have three highly adoptable cats that have been waiting for a very long time for a home and they were supposed to be showcased at this weekend’s cat show for a chance at adoption, but now they can’t come,
it’s enough to send someone into tears.

Campfire, Flashlight, and even more crucially, Baby Citrine have been waiting for a long time for a home and now after all of this time,
have developed a single spot of ringworm, which deters people from adopting.

I am literally crying out for someone to adopt Campfire, Flashlight, or Citrine.

We have finally had interest in two of them but when you say “ringworm”, people run for the hills.

I get it, it’s a pain in the 🍑
hence the tears,
But It’s easy to treat for ringworm,
just time consuming.

We will give you the links to the products we use and show you how to use them.

Please, Cat Gods, send us an angel!
🙏🏼👼🏼

Sweet Tart is officially available for adoption! She's one of many kittens we've taken in from Animal Services lately as a foster because she needed some extra time and TLC. She's 4 months old and flourishing with one of our staff members. She is great with feline companions and tolerates mild-mannered dogs. She takes her time warming up to people but is very playful, charming, curious, and gentle - not to mention quite good-looking! 😺 If you're interested in seeing if Sweet Tart would be a good addition to your family, reach out to Options today at the email below. Let's find her a great home! ⬇❤

Hey locals!!! Its still kitten season -- kittens need fosters! Please help if you can -- or at least share!!

Update: Foster Found!

We know we're heavy on the kitten asks this week, and while we'll explain more soon, we have another need for fosters! 😺 The goal is to place these two by the end of today. They need socialization and TLC to help them gain confidence and better trust people. They are quiet, scared, and minimally hissy - that's it! We'll provide tips and training for socialization. You provide a soothing home, an open heart, and snuggle time galore! If you can help, contact us at 775-499-3700 or [email protected].

Fostering is fun, rewarding, and truly, saves lives! ❤

i have seen the posts on the Nextdoor app and a Reno page. sadly the people responding to this woman's posts do not have the full story

A few of you may have seen a complaint on social media from a woman who became upset. She made multiple posts to various social media sites where we cannot respond, hence this post: A few months ago one of her dogs came in for a neuter and we are sorry that he experienced inflammation following the surgery. Sometimes this is caused by licking at the incision site; other times an individual animal experiences a reaction to suture material. Occasionally, the E-collar, intended to prevent licking, can cause irritation if the dog is repeatedly trying to lick. A veterinarian saw the dog the day after surgery and provided advice to reduce inflammation and we understood that the dog had recovered fully. Due to the level of anger the owner had shared with staff we were surprised when she called for a second surgery recently, an enucleation or eye removal. Trust between a client and their veterinarian is so important that we recommended that she seek another clinic for that surgery, which she indicated was urgent. While Options clinic tries to help with emergencies as we can, it is not an emergency clinic, and we do refer people to other clinics when we are unable to meet urgent needs. The team at the clinic cares deeply about all animals and our mission is to provide veterinary care to pets who would otherwise suffer without care for economic reasons. We have performed over 1,300 surgeries so far this year with a very low complication rate. We know this does not affect the fact that this dog experienced inflammation nor does it repair the way the dog’s owner feels, but we are glad the dog has recovered well and wish his person well.

This was a huge deal yesterday. OJ was my son’s cat and is vision impaired. He has had a lot of difficulty with the new catio because it’s unfamiliar. I prop the flap open for short periods and he will venture out. Yesterday he actually went thru on his own. I did not see that happen but discovered him out there. He saw me and was coming back in but I had to wait a while for him to figure it out! I was so excited for him!!! If you haven’t gotten your cat a catio, you need to!!!

this one is close to my heart. i don't know this man or this dog but a friend/coworker of his told me about them. and i said if they were able to get help, i would donate and share. Options helps everyone in this community so much -- they have helped me with all of the dentals we needed in my household. if you can spare a few bucks, please donate for this little dog's care. and share this post!!!

Meet Trigger, an elderly mini pinscher, and his person, Jason. Trigger was in pain when he tried to eat; it appeared to be serious because he nearly stopped eating at all. Jason was very upset that something was wrong and knew he had to get help right away. He contacted a vet but the cost of care was just too high for him to afford. He was referred to Options Veterinary Care, and we got Trigger in right away. We did an initial exam and scheduled dental surgery. CASI (Carson Animal Services Initiative) covered the costs of antibiotics and pain medications, but Jason still needs your help. We provided extensive dental surgery at an affordable cost, and now we need to raise about $1,200 for Trigger. Jason is a senior and a veteran. While he does work one job, his income is limited. He’s tried to get a second job so that he could afford better medical care for both himself and Trigger—but sadly, he has physical limitations that prevent him from doing so. Jason is extremely devoted to Trigger, which is why we went ahead and did the surgery. We didn’t want either of them to suffer. Will you help us raise that $1,200? Donate online using the link below, or mail a check to Options Veterinary Care, 4690 Longley Lane, Suite 1, Reno, NV 89502, and just put the name Trigger in the comment field. Thank you in advance! Trigger is getting a second chance thanks to YOU!

i just listened to this interview with Erika from Catios Reno. its a nice interview -- listen and think about how you could have a safe place for your cats to be outside!!!

Cats are independent and love to roam, but letting them outside on their own can be dangerous. Catios Reno has created a way to let cats be outdoors and safe.

My dream-come-true project for 2023 was to have a new catio for my cats to replace the old one that had been in the back of the house for about 12 years. the wind and sun took its toll but my herd has a new, fabulous place to hang out now. i have some wonderful friends that donated towards this project and Joe worked with me on financing. i cannot say enough good things about this man who single-handedly constructed this magnificent Palais de Chat for my cats. he made a wonderful place for the Pinkston herd to hang out and watch the birds. if you are interested in getting a free estimate, contact Catios Reno and make an appointment. and if you want organic vegetables and fresh eggs, contact Joe as well. we are thrilled to have fresh eggs and the cats get grass from him. Keep your cats safe!! Don't declaw and don't let them roam outside!!

04/06/2023

just putting the word out there that Catios Reno is building my herd a new catio in the back yard!!! we are VERY excited about this project. and i found out that Joe, the Catio Man, also has fresh eggs available. so if you are interested in purchasing fresh eggs at $5/doz, let me know and i can get you connected with him. i will be posting pictures of the catio when it's finished and the cats are enjoying it. my old catio lasted about 12 years but the wind and the sun beat it to death so it was time for a new one. this one will be twice as big and is going to be pretty amazing for my cats!!! stay tuned!

So I have a story for y'all. About this cat named Gizmo. I don't know all of his story but what I do know is pretty appalling and should make every pet owner think long and hard about who they hire to take care of their pets, who they trust with a key to their house and the code to their alarm. I've been a pet sitter for almost 14 years and I do understand about trust. I have never given anyone any reason not to trust me but I also understand they don't know that when they first meet me. It's a long story but maybe it will save another family a lot of heart ache.
The part of the story I know is that a young couple decided to travel out of the country for a long period of time (6-8 weeks). The woman was pregnant with twins and I assume they wanted to visit family before she was too pregnant to travel. I don't know exactly where they went or when this happened, but in the last couple of months. They hired a "big box" pet sitting company....you know, the ones that have supposed independent contractors working for them, people who evidently are not vetted but can secure jobs through the company who takes a large chunk of the money the customer is charged. They paid this person $6000 up front to stay in their home and take care of a husky mix, a pitbull mix and a shepherd mix, along with an 18 year old cat named Gizmo. a short time after they left the States, they received a message from this "pet sitter" that said "I can't do this" or something to that effect, and never had contact with that person again. Ultimately the neighbors called animal control here locally to report the animals were not being cared for. they were picked up and taken to animal control, where eventually the owners were able to talk to someone, get them taken to a local boarding facility where they were for a period of time. the people cut their trip short and came home to find their house was a shambles. they had to go to a motel/hotel setting to live where they could not have the animals. the woman began having pregnancy complications and is at UC-Davis for that. they had nothing they could do for the animals so they surrendered them. hopefully they are going to sue this big box business and get their money back as well as the money they are out having to stay in a hotel, the money for boarding the animals, the money for having their home rebuilt. and hopefully this will be broadcast across the news stations far and wide so other people will not fall into this kind of situation.
so the dogs were surrendered and i do not know their outcome, if they have been rehomed or are still available. the boarding facility kept the cat until we could figure out how to help him. i'm not sure he is 18 but Options Veterinary Care is seeing him next Tuesday -- Dr. Brad, not the other vet -- and will do labs and a full exam to be sure of Gizmo's health status, as well as estimate his age. Maybe he is 18 but he is very bright-eyed and curious about everything and appears to be very healthy physically. For the short-term, unless I'm lousy at fostering, he is living in my yellow room with the baby gates up. Everyone is very curious but i don't want any issues so they will be separated for now. Maybe at some point OJ can go visit face to face, since he is the ambassador to welcome new cats around here. Bonney Brown is going to network him after his vet visit and the Humane Network will see to his vet needs through Options.

I am back and recovered from my road trip and ready to take care of your cats!! Very hopeful we will have easy traveling weather through the holidays this year -- i did not have fun shoveling snow to get into driveways last year lol.

TWO DAYS!!!! its getting real now, folks! i do my last pet sit tomorrow evening. my pet sitter arrives Monday morning and then its GO TIME! my big adventure, driving alone to Wichita, where i grew up, meeting my lifelong friend, Gloria, from 7th grade, and my friend, Cecilia, from my first job at Retail Credit Company, from 50 years ago!! From there i drive up to the Kansas City area to pick up my +1, Monica, for the drive to St. Louis and The Wedding. We leave Sunday to drive to Bloomington, Illinois to meet up with long time facebook friends, Carol and Tonya, before heading back to KC to drop Monica off. I head for home on Monday, Halloween day, stopping in Ft. Collins to meet up with another long time facebook friend, Margo. Then i am on the road back to Reno and my pets! I hope i can get home late on November 2 so i'll have two days before i have to get back to work but we'll see how motivated i am for long distance driving.

08/30/2022

two months from today i will be in Bloomington Illinois with long time facebook friend, Monica, meeting long time facebook friends, Tonya and Carol. i am really pretty excited about this road trip and getting to meet people that i've talked to online for 13 years. of course its a wedding trip, but i still get to have a little fun on the trip to and from. on the way, i'm dropping down into Wichita to drive around and see how much its changed since i left in 1978, and meeting my lifelong friend, Gloria. our 50th class reunion is happening in September but i'm not going for that. then after i take Monica back to Kansas City after we meet Tonya and Carol, i'll be meeting a friend i met online before facebook, in Ft. Collins, CO, Margo. her cat, Cricket, and my cat, Cheeto, became friends on another social media site. nothing like old people having fun. lol. October 24 through November 4, I'm gone -- longest i have ever been away from my dogs and cats! i'll be having serious withdrawal from the cats, but fortunately i will get to see my grand dogs, Jaina and Arthas, while i'm in St. Louis.
