Did you hear about the recent change that ALL dogs should now be vaccinated for Leptospirosis? Before Leptospirosis was labeled as endemic in the U.S, SWVH made recommendations based on the lifestyle of your dog. Now, due to an increase in cases Nationwide, testing done on wildlife that carry it and the risk to people, the AVMA, AAHA and AVCIM have decided to include it as part of your pets core vaccine defense. We look forward to discussing this with you at your next visit to SWVH.
Leptospirosis is a zoonotic bacterial infection (one that can spread from dogs to humans). The bacteria can be found in water, soil, and the urine of infected animals. Dogs can contract leptospirosis by drinking contaminated water, swimming in infected water, or coming into contact with contaminated soil or animals. Once a dog contracts leptospirosis, it negatively affects the kidneys, liver and lungs. The best way to prevent leptospirosis is through vaccination!
