We want to remind you all with adolescent dogs, please give them time and maybe join another class at Dog Training by PJ to keep them occupied and out of trouble.

Adolescence occurs between six months and 18 months of age—a time when guardians typically struggle the most with their dogs. Some guardians are so overwhelmed and underprepared for this developmental stage of their dog’s life, they choose to surrender the dog to a local shelter or rescue group. In a recent study published in the Journal of Applied Animal Welfare Science found that the majority of the surrendered dogs (47.7 percent) ) were between 5 months and 3 years of age (M.D. Salman,John G. New, Jr.,Janet M. Scarlett,Philip H. Kass,Rebecca Ruch-Gallie &Suzanne Hetts, 2010)

The neurobiology of adolescence is fascinating, with some key events that alter both the structure and function of the brain.

During canine adolescence, changing s*x hormones effect the animals stress responses. Adolescent dogs have a decreased ability to process information they are receiving from the environment including the presence of dogs, vehicles, people, or really anything around them. They behave in ways that might feel frustrating or upsetting for the dog’s person.

The connectivity between the frontal cortex (responsible for decision making) and amygdala (responsible for emotional processing) decreases, resulting in less behavioral control. We see increased risk taking and more sensitivity to fear.

So what does this mean? This could mean that what was once no big deal to the dog now feels scary; what was once easy to do is now stressful; what once made sense is now confusing. At times, the world can feel like ‘too much’ for the adolescent dog.

As your puppy undergoes this transition into adulthood their inner world is intense, even chaotic. Many pet owners experience an increase in undesirable behavior and find themselves becoming increasingly frustrated. In turn, our own frustration and impatience can cause us to act unpredictably. This adds to our puppy’s inner turmoil. When the inside and the outside are both unpredictable it can be difficult for our dogs to adjust.

If you have an adolescent dog, what can you do? You can give your dog the time and space to observe what is going on around them when on leash at a distance away from the activity when possible. You can give your dog long walks to sniff and explore in nature, giving their brain time to decompress. You can offer your dog a quiet space to sleep so that they can consolidate memories effectively. You can continue training various skills, breaking them down into easier steps that can be generously reinforced.

By understanding what our adolescent dog is experiencing we gain greater compassion and understanding. When we approach adolescence with patience we create a world that is predictable and gentle so our puppies grow up to be their best adult selves.

Jean Donaldson is a legend in the dog training world and her book The Culture Clash has been incredibly influential. In fact many people tell me it started them on their journey towards being a positive reinforcement trainer. Back in 2016, I had the honour of interviewing Jean about the book and she said, "Thousands of practitioners are already out there, daily, getting the job done both in training, behaviour modification, management of animals, the full gamut of case types, and they're doing so without aversives."
It's an incredible honour that I, together with my colleague Kristi Benson, get to interview Jean Donaldson again on Monday 9 September and 10am Pacific (1pm ET/6pm UK time). I can't think of a better way to start Bark! Fest, the book festival for animal lovers. I hope to see you there!

GIFT OF THE GROWL

Not all growling is a sign that a dog’s unhappy. Some growls may be part of a particular play style, seeking attention, from frustration, excitement or other reasons. They may all sound a little different and may be unique to that particular dog.

This post is not about different types of growls, but about reactive, aggressive or early warning growls.

When a dog growls, especially when it’s directed at us, our natural human response is to feel offended and maybe even angry.

Surely dogs need to learn not to growl, growling is bad, it’s not acceptable, it’s a problem that needs to be stopped or punished so a dog learns that it’s wrong, disrespectful and unacceptable, right?

This couldn’t be further from the truth! A dog that growls has just provided us with very valuable information.

In their way, they have just told us how they feel about a situation without escalating to a bite.

Dogs use growling in an attempt to avoid having to resort to biting, not to initiate it. They could just as easily not have even bothered to growl and gone straight to a bite.

A dog that growls is trying to communicate how they feel. Ignoring or punishment only suppresses this communication. Punishment increases fear, anxiety and stress.

A dog that bites without the warning of a growl is a far more serious problem than a dog that growls but doesn’t bite.

Look for any other early warning signals that may precede a growl. Learn to recognise body language and specific situations that trigger it.

Be grateful for the gift of a growl – this is a non-violent early warning signal that we need to acknowledge, understand and respect.

It's a gift of clear communication that allows us to intervene, advocate and prevent escalation to a bite.

It’s not just about “The Science”

For many years those of us with educational qualifications in the field of training and behaviour have been using “science” as an argument to persuade people to switch over to positive reinforcement and abandon aversive training methods. While I still believe that there is plenty of evidence for the efficacy of positive reinforcement and the potential harms of punitive training methods, I am starting to think that we may have been using the wrong strategy by simply telling people to “follow the science”.

The reality is that there is also evidence that punishment works. You can alter behaviour using aversive training tools (albeit with unpleasant fallout) and plenty of people stick with such training methods because they see results. After all, the theory of operant conditioning involves 3 types of learning in addition to positive reinforcement: removing something a dog wants to reduce behaviour (negative punishment), adding something unpleasant to reduce behaviour (positive punishment) or removing something unpleasant to increase behaviour (negative reinforcement). While we understand that there are unpleasant emotional consequences for dogs attached to all three of these types of learning, this does not mean that they don’t change behaviour – they do.

So, what is the real crux of the matter? What are we really striving for by trying to persuade people to use positive reinforcement rather than those types of learning which carry unpleasant emotional consequences? Are we just wanting to change behaviour in the way that we think is most effective? I don’t think so. The true difference between someone who strives to use positive reinforcement and avoids using both positive and negative punishment and negative reinforcement, is that we care about the emotional experience and wellbeing of dogs. Yes, there are lots of things we can do to dogs to change behaviour, but the question is about whether they are ethical or not.

At the end of the day, people have different views on the subject. Some people simply do not believe that animals are emotional beings or that their feelings and experiences matter much. For them, the ends justify the means. Others feel that they have a right as humans to get results as quickly and conveniently as possible and animals have no real rights, so whatever works is acceptable. Some believe that our dogs must be subordinate to us, so some sort of force and intimidation is necessary to create a “dominant-subordinate” relationship. Then there are those of us who recognise that all animals have complex emotions and that we have a duty of care to avoid causing suffering and to promote good feelings in our interactions with them.

While a fair amount of ignorance exists around the rich emotional lives of animals and many people have been influenced by outdated pop dog psychology, at some point, no matter how much information a person has, the choice becomes an ethical one. In the end people have to decide whether it is okay to cause fear, pain, frustration and discomfort to get what you want from a dog. Each person has to ask themselves if it is okay for humans to make dogs feel bad to get our way or whether, because the means exist to train and manage behaviour in ways that contribute to positive emotional experiences for dogs, ethics requires us to make a choice for positive reinforcement.

It is not just about the science or about what “works” – it is about how we view dogs, their emotional capacity and their right to lead happy, fulfilled lives that are free from pain and fear. If you believe it is wrong to hurt or frighten an animal to get them to comply with what you want, you will not need science to convince you of that!

Take your pup on a sniffarri and have some fun!

Encouraging dogs to sniff on walks is not only natural and instinctual for them but also has many benefits for their physical and mental well-being.

Sniffing provides mental stimulation for dogs, which is important for their overall mental health.

A good sniff also helps them to learn about their environment, identify scents, and understand the world around them. Through sniffing they can also release pent-up energy, which can help to reduce behavioural problems.

Additionally, sniffing can help to alleviate stress and anxiety in dogs, making them feel more relaxed and comfortable on walks.
