Powering the Boom: Goldfield’s Early Electrical Transformation

A rare look at Goldfield’s early days, this image captures the Transformer Station of the Nevada Power, Mining, and Milling Company in the early 1900s. The sign on the building notes that the transmission line from Bishop Creek was still under construction when this photo was taken.

By the time this station was built, demand for electricity had already outpaced supply. The Nevada Power, Mining, and Milling Company, formed in December 1904, set out to change that. A year later, the company built the Lake Sabrina Reservoir on Bishop Creek in Inyo County, California. Water from the reservoir powered turbines that sent electricity 113 miles to Tonopah and Goldfield, fueling the region’s mining boom.

Hauling Ore and Supplies at Tonopah Mine – Early 1900s

This early 1900s photograph, simply captioned "Tonopah Mine," captures a candid moment of work in progress. Horse and mule teams haul mining supplies and ore along a narrow wagon road, flanked by waste rock piles. A miner pushes an ore car across a trestle in the background, while others stand on a platform with stacked ore sacks, ready for transport to the mill. Unlike many staged photographs of the era, this image shows real mining work as it happened back in the mining heydays.
