Some people are just cruel. An unknown individual left a rooster in a beat up crate next to the gate for the store this morning. No food, no water. No care of what happens to the animal. Yes, roosters are a challenge because of their testosterone and City of Reno prohibitions against roo's in city limits. Still, they shouldn't be discarded like unwanted trash.

So, we are looking for an owner for Mr. Roo. If you are looking for a roo call or come by. His tail feathers are beat up - he appears to be full grown (so probably not from a hatch this year). No idea the breed or his disposition (or health status). We need to find a home for him because neither of us can take a roo.

Let's talk hay and feed. At best these will be challenging at times in the coming months. California dairy farmers are buying up all the hay they can since their fields are dry and there's no natural forage for their cows. That is both driving up cost and impacting supply. We have received our first shipment of our Timothy/Mountain Meadow grass hay - for the first time in several years the price has gone up (we are unable to absorb $1.50/bale increase) so it is $20.50 this year. We "should" have that grass hay available all year as we have in past years. Hay samples have just been sent to the lab for analysis - it typically takes about 10 days to get results (assuming the parcel gets to its destination via USPS). Once results are available they will be posted.

Grain prices (according to our feed suppliers Bar Ale and Associated Feed) are beginning to stabilize and it is felt that price increases should start to even out and plateau. Let's hope that is true since we have seen some big price increases the past couple of months. As long as the Midwest continues to get moisture (minus the tornadoes) yields of grain products should be at least be adequate to meet US demand. As we get more information as far as hay and/or feed supplies we will keep you our customers informed. We strive to give you the best quality feed products at the best price we can offer (and with the best customer service). Thank you for continuing to shop at Foothill Feed, your hometown feed store, and allowing us to meet the feed needs of your animals.

This is a longer read (lots of comments and photos) on a very important topic - keeping chickens cool in the hot temperatures. Take the time to look at the pictures and read the comments - the ideas and information could not only help keep your poultry more comfortable this summer, it could even save the life of one of your chickens.

An Open Letter to Drivers Who Aren't Horse Owners

Dear Drivers,

My most valued possession is inside the trailer behind my pickup. He stepped into that rolling steel box because I asked him to and he trusts me. He’s a living, breathing creature, and all 1,200 pounds of him are precariously balanced on four tiny hooves as my truck and trailer wind down the road.

My horse is not a boat or camp trailer, and I cannot stop quickly or turn sharply without risking his safely and even his life.

Know that I will do just about anything to avoid hitting the breaks with a horse in my trailer. However, if your Suburban is hidden in the blind spot behind my two-horse trailer and I do have to stop suddenly, you’re too close to stop without ending up in the trailer with my horse.

When I make those wide turns, I need them to prevent my horse from scrambling. Please give me room and time to turn.

And that large distance between my rig and the car in front of me? It might look like enough room to fit three sedans bumper to bumper, but it’s actually the distance I need to stop softly and safely without my horse falling.

Those times when we’re headed up a mountain pass, my speed is as fast as I can go. My foot has the accelerator pressed to the floor, and no matter how hard you try, your Honda can’t push us up this hill. I promise I’ll move to the right lane when it becomes available or pull over if I find a safe spot on the shoulder, but until then I ask for your patience and some space.

You should know I started driving a truck and horse trailer while still on a learner’s permit. Years of experience means I can back a rig around a tight corner uphill or down a U.S. Forest Service road for miles in a pinch. And, if you need someone to hook up your flatbed in one try or drive the UHaul when you move, I’m your gal. But if you park me in with only feet to spare at a breakfast restaurant during summer I’m stuck until you move, and my horse is really hot inside his metal box.

Lastly, my rig weighs 3 tons, and that much weight prevents me from swerving. When you pass me going 65 mph uphill on a blind corner, you don’t just put my horse at risk: Your driving threatens the lives of the oncoming driver, my passenger, me, you, and everyone in the cars behind us.

So next time you see a horse trailer, assume an animal in there. Please give the rig some space and offer some patience. By driving safely, we’ll all get where we’re going.

Thank you,

Michelle, Marathon, and Jack

Something everyone with animal companions should have in their home emergency first aid kit is STYPTIC POWDER. We learned that lesson with Ladybug last weekend - somehow she broke off one of her claws on the left foot and was bleeding profusely. A small amount of styptic powder was sprinkled on the bleeding tissue and almost immediately the bleeding stopped. The store has two sizes of styptic powder in stock - a small container (.5 ounce) perfect for chickens, cats, bunnies, small dogs, and other small companion animals, as well as a large (16 ounce) jar for large animals such as horses, cows, goats, sheep, and larger dogs. This should only be applied to minor wounds and be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Update - we have a few chicks available due to cancellations. There are 6 Black Australorps and 8 Golden Laced Wyandottes ready to be adopted by someone looking for chicks.

The chicks safely arrived this morning and have settled in well here at "Club Foothill." They are eating and drinking and recovering from their travels to Reno (as well as singing and dancing and running and even throwing in a few yoga moves). All chicks have been reserved and for those that reserved chicks don't forget to come pick them up at your scheduled pick up time Saturday. We will have boxes for transporting the chicks home.

A fossil unearthed in Belgium dubbed the "Wonderchicken" is providing a rare glimpse into the early evolution of modern birds at the twilight of the age of dinosaurs, right before an asteroid impact altered the course of life on Earth.
