I don't care who you are or what discipline you ride.
Put a flex on your horse.
It is so much more than just a "one rein stop". It's your E break if they don't stop when asking via vertical flexion. It's a exercise to keep them soft and supple on both sides it keeps their necks from being stiff it's a great stretch for them too.
It's not something that should be taboo in the training world. This maneuver once your horse is trained for it and you do HAVE to train them for it. Can stop so many accidents runaways bucks etc.
I always put a side to side flex on all my personal and training horses and I teach their owners how to activate it. This is the most important tool you can use and it can save your life in a really precarious situation.
Not every horse will stop in a bad situation when you pull back. But if you can do this maneuver effectively you can just about 100% shut any horse down before things get really sideways.
Put a flex on your horse.

Gotta get them broke to here the pops!
She was a little sassy for her first lope. But her progress is great. Getting a nice stop when asked and going into her gates somewhat smoothly.
We really try to build a solid foundation so our training horses feel confident enough to lope with out blow up or accident. But sometimes they can still be a little sassy. As smart as this mare is she'll be loping circles by the end of the week and ready to go home.
Had a good rides at Wilson's creek today! Dakota is doing so good.
Even the young ones need to go through things. And in our program you can expect trail riding like this that they work through so your horse understands and does not blow up.
Perfect day to get out and lunge some horses.
I keep my lunging sessions short unless I have a large round pen to work them in(it's in the works at the ranch). It's not natural for horses to be in tight circles or go in circles at all. Keeping lunging sessions short and sweet keeps their joints in good shape. No legs no horse 🤷♀️.
