This perfectly explains a lot about learning but especially when people get into horses. The valley of despair typically happens after a fall/injury/scare or when you fail in competition. You realize you don’t know how to get over the fear or raise your skill level. Then, as you learn more, you learn that there is no reason to be scared or upset you just need to learn how to handle the situations, prevent them, and practice more effectively.

The problem? Most people are ignorant of their own ignorance.

The Dunning-Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias where individuals with limited knowledge or skill overestimate their own competence. This overestimation arises because their lack of knowledge prevents them from understanding their lack of knowledge.

As people increase in competence and skill, they begin to understand how much they don't know. As such, confidence decreases and then increases as skill and awareness are gained.
