Today was spent battling the weather and roads to ensure these hams get to enjoy their first Thanksgiving with lots of love and a little bit of turkey.
A whole litter of babies were surrendered today... why?
Because they have open fontanelles (think soft spot on a newborns heard,) these usually close between 8/10 weeks.
Unfortunately a broker/pet store will not wait for them to develope, and by 9/10 weeks they want the fresh newborns for their cute store displays.
They can't stay at the breeding facility, because thats work and expenses the breeder won't be compensated for.
So what happens? It use to be these guys would be "put down," but because of hard working rescuers- these muffins will be allowed more time to "bake," be loved, and find furever homes.
These kids are with fosters now and see our vet next week, so are not adoptable until they get medically cleared. With tomorrow being Thanksgiving- we will not be checking or responding to messages. So below are answes to commonly asked questions:
What breed?
6 Shihtzu (3 males, 3 females,) brown and white
2 Teddypoo (1 male, 1 female,) white and cream
How old are they?
Just over 8 weeks
Why are they in rescue?
Shihtzu's were disqualified due to open fontanelles
Teddypoo's were disqualified due to small umbilical hernias
What is the adoption fee?
$500 and includes up to date vaccinations, preventative treatments, microchipping, vet inspection and a $100 refund after spaying/neutering completion (for breeds this size we suggest approximately 6 months)
