WHAT IS CANINE PARVOVIRUS??
We have seen a disturbing number of parvovirus cases this summer. Here is what you need to know, in order to protect your pet!
Parvovirus is a very contagious disease that can be deadly. It can cause lethargy, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, dehydration and decreased appetite. It can be very expensive to treat but inexpensive to prevent with appropriate vaccination. We have seen vaccination failures (even in adult dogs!) with over the counter vaccinations.
It is very important to make sure your pet is up to date on their vaccinations. New puppies NEED to receive a series of vaccinations in order to develop full immunity to parvovirus. Puppies should receive their vaccinations every 4 weeks until they are between 16 and 20 weeks of age. We recommend that new puppies receive an exam within 72 hours of coming home to their new family so we can discuss an appropriate vaccination schedule with you. We also recommend that you refrain from taking your puppy to any dog parks, puppy classes and pet stores until they receive their full series of vaccinations.
