🐾In this video I am working on training Isaac to put his head down on cue. I just started training it that day. I started by shaping the behavior on a pillow and kept raising the criteria, when Isaac was ready, until finally he understood to put his head down on the floor. Poodles, of all sizes, are a part of the working breed group who need lots of physical and mental stimulation. Training new tricks is a great way to keep dogs mentally stimulated and prevent unwanted behaviors. NST! 🐾Never Stop Training! Sometimes we work on a new skill and sometimes we work on the maintenance of a previously learned skill. Today I worked with Axel and Isaac on the “leave it” cue. I chose to work in the kitchen because it is pretty likely that food will occasionally fall on the floor. I don’t want my dogs to run to gobble it up. In this video, I have goldfish crackers in one hand and kibble in the other. I drop then goldfish and cue them to “leave it”. Next I mark the behavior I want and give them the kibble as a reinforcer. At then end, I pick up the goldfish. They never get the item I cued for them to “leave it.” What if it were a dead mouse on a walk or a grape that fell off the counter? Bear in mind, this is not the first time we worked on “leave it.” There were many steps before getting to this point.

I’ve been raising the criteria of Isaac’s training to add in many distractions. We are taking him on vacation so I want him to feel good about being in different environments. These videos and photos are of a recent afternoon in Philly. Notice that I had him walk around the manhole cover as it was probably hot. He also was exposed to pigeons!
