Coeur has been working overtime, trying to find a good solution for our microchip problem and both AKC reunite microchips and Homeagain microchips have been very nice to work with. Again I applaud Homeagain for being willing to allow people with Save This Life chips to re-register their chips at no charge and that is just a wonderful thing for them to do.
Going forward we will be offering both Homeagain microhips as well as AKC reunite microchips. They will have prepaid registration that is included in the cost. There will be no additional fees for our clients to pay. We will help get them registered so you don’t have to manage that we have set up accounts so that we can register them for you and with luck this will be a great solution going forward.

Anyone still needing help to find out if they have a save this life chip or how to get it re-registered please feel free to contact us. We can look up your pet or scan your pet and tell you whether it is a save this life chip and if so, we can give you the information to help you re-register them.

Important Notice Regarding Save This Life Microchips:

We have recently discovered the Save This Life, the microchip company we have worked with for years has ceased operations nationwide. They are no longer responding to customer inquiries via phone, email or other communication channels. Unfortunately this means the Save This Life microchips are no longer functional for reuniting lost pets with their owners.

We have contacted Covetrus the distributor of the microchip to try and get more information and will keep you updated. In the meantime time Covetrus has given us an option to re-register the Save this life microchips so they are still included in the AAHA Microchip lookup database.

https://www.freepetchipregistry.com. This is a free universal microchip registration service that will register any brand of microchip. They do share their database with the AAHA microchip lookup website to ensure that your microchip number remains valid.

There are a number of other registries that are listed on the AAHA microchip lookup website: https://www.aaha.org/for-veterinary-professionals/microchip-search/. Partway down the page there is a header : Participating Microchipping and Pet Recovery Services. Clicking on that tab opens up a list of other registry options. Please be aware that many of them will require a fee for chip registrations and that fee can vary.

If you need to find out if you have a Save This Life Chip implanted or need the number we are more than happy to scan your pet and give you the necessary information to help you get the microchip updated.

I am truly sorry for any inconvenience this has caused. My own pets have Save this Life microchips and I’m upset by how this was handled on a number of levels. I don’t like the feeling of being betrayed by a company that I thought was giving our clients a valued product and service. We will do our best to help you get your pets microchips re-registered.

The Importance of Proper Grooming and Coat Care for Your Dog

Did you know that grooming is about more than just keeping your dog looking their best? Proper grooming and coat care play a vital role in your dog’s overall health and well-being. The needs of each dog can vary depending on their breed, lifestyle, and specific health conditions. Here’s why regular grooming is essential and how it benefits your furry friend:

Why Grooming is Important
1. Skin and Coat Health:
• Regular brushing removes dead hair, prevents mats, and distributes natural oils for a shiny, healthy coat.
• Grooming helps spot early signs of skin issues, such as dryness, irritation, or parasites like fleas and ticks.
2. Comfort and Mobility:
• Overgrown or matted fur can cause discomfort and limit mobility, especially in active dogs.
• Mats can trap moisture and dirt, leading to infections or skin irritation.
3. Paw and Nail Care:
• Keeping nails trimmed prevents painful overgrowth, which can lead to difficulty walking or joint strain.
• Regularly checking paw pads keeps them free from cracks, debris, or injuries.
4. Ear and Eye Care:
• Certain breeds are prone to ear infections or tear stains, which can be managed with proper grooming.
5. Seasonal and Lifestyle Considerations:
• Dogs living in colder climates may need regular brushing to maintain an insulating undercoat.
• Dogs in warmer climates may need trimming to stay cool, but not all breeds benefit from shaving.

Breed-Specific Grooming Needs
• Short-Haired Breeds: Require regular brushing to remove loose hair and distribute natural oils.
• Double-Coated Breeds (e.g., Huskies, Golden Retrievers): Need frequent brushing to manage shedding and prevent matting, but shaving is usually not recommended as it can disrupt natural temperature regulation.
• Long-Haired Breeds (e.g., Shih Tzus, Maltese): Require regular trims and detangling to keep their coat manageable and free from mats.
• Curly-Coated Breeds (e.g., Poodles, Doodles): Need consistent grooming and clipping to prevent mats and keep their coat healthy.
• Working or Active Dogs: May need more frequent grooming to remove dirt and debris from outdoor activities.

Health Benefits of Proper Grooming
• Improved Circulation: Regular brushing stimulates the skin and improves blood flow.
• Allergy Control: Grooming helps reduce allergens like dander and pollen trapped in fur.
• Parasite Prevention: Early detection of fleas, ticks, or skin abnormalities keeps your dog safe from potential health issues.

Tips for Proper Grooming
• Set a Schedule: Grooming frequency depends on your dog’s breed and lifestyle. A professional groomer or your veterinarian can help determine the best routine.
• Use the Right Tools: Invest in brushes, combs, and shampoos designed for your dog’s coat type.
• Visit a Professional Groomer: For haircuts, nail trims, and more complex care, a professional groomer can ensure your pet looks and feels their best.

Winter is coming! and while all of us will enjoy a brief respite from the wet and the mud there are things that you need to be aware of with your pets so they can enjoy the snow safely

Protecting Your Pets in Freezing Weather

As temperatures drop, it’s essential to keep your furry friends safe and comfortable. Cold weather can pose serious risks to pets, including hypothermia, frostbite, and general discomfort. Here are some tips to help your pets stay warm and healthy during freezing conditions:

Dangers of Cold Weather for Pets
1. Hypothermia: Prolonged exposure to cold can cause pets’ body temperatures to drop dangerously low, potentially leading to lethargy, weakness, or even death.
2. Frostbite: Pets’ ears, tails, and paws are vulnerable to frostbite, which can cause tissue damage.
3. Dehydration: Water sources can freeze, leaving pets without access to clean drinking water.
4. Salt and Deicers: Chemicals on sidewalks can irritate pets’ paws and be toxic if ingested.
5. Injuries: Ice can make surfaces slippery, increasing the risk of injuries for pets and their owners.

How to Protect Your Pets

Outdoor Precautions
• Limit Time Outside: Only allow pets outside for short bathroom breaks or exercise during freezing weather.
• Bundle Up: Use pet-safe sweaters or coats, especially for short-haired or senior pets. Booties can protect paws from ice, snow, and harmful chemicals.
• Provide Shelter: If pets must be outside, ensure they have an insulated, dry, and windproof shelter.

Indoor Comfort
• Keep Them Warm: Ensure your pet has a cozy bed away from drafts, cold floors, and open doors.
• Watch for Heat Sources: Keep pets away from space heaters and fireplaces to prevent burns.

Paw Care
• Clean Their Paws: Wipe your pet’s paws after outdoor trips to remove salt, ice, and deicers.
• Moisturize: Use a pet-safe balm to prevent dry or cracked paw pads.

General Health Tips
• Hydration: Ensure fresh, unfrozen water is always available.
• Diet Adjustments: Talk to your vet about dietary changes to meet your pet’s winter energy needs.
• ID Tags: Ensure your pet’s identification is up-to-date in case they get lost in bad weather.

Signs Your Pet Is Too Cold
• Shivering or trembling
• Whining or seeking shelter
• Lifting paws off the ground
• Lethargy or weakness

Update 5/12/24. I’m sorry to say that due to some immediate personal issues that have come up over the past couple weeks I’m going to have to cancel the health clinic for this year. All monies will of course be refunded and we will be back in 2025. I’m truly sorry for the inconvenience to all involved and I
appreciate your understanding. We are able to accommodate people who want to do testing as an appointment during our regulars hours, we just can’t run it as a clinic all in one day. Again, my apologies

It was so much fun in 2023, we are doing it again in 2024. Please contact Christina Amos for pre registration information at [email protected]
