Kitten update! They are all doing well, weaned, and litter trained. More playful than ever as too!

Two kittens are still available for adoption, as is their mama. February 3rd they will all be seen for their initial vaccinations, spays/neuters, and microchips. If you're interested in either of the available kittens or mama, please send a message here or via email at [email protected]

With the kittens being super playful photos can be difficult! We are happy to send what photos we can catch, along with videos, to potential adopters.

Wade has gone to two events and his new family still hasn't found him! Can you help us find our foster Wade a new family?

A little bit about Wade; he is roughly 2yrs old and a big ole love bug. He enjoys playing with stuffies but isn't into destroying them. His ideal home would be with a family who makes him a part of the family, one he can Netflix and chill with that will also throw a toy around for him. He is potty trained, crate trained, and neutered. He is dog and cat friendly. He's also great in the car!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗲? Meet Acco and Bindi!

A double merle, or homozygous merle, is when two dogs with merle coat patterns are bred together. Every puppy in that litter has a 25% chance of being what is considered "double merle" meaning they inherited the merle gene from both parents. This can result in a high white coat which many irresponsible, backyard breeders may try to accomplish in an attempt to over price their puppies. Along with the high white coat those double merle puppies are at a higher risk of being deaf, vision impaired, or otherwise physical abnormalities and susceptible to seizures.

Double merle puppies are 100% preventable. This bonded pair came into a local county shelter, and thanks to Arise Animal Rescue were able to be pulled off the euthanasia list for Christmas. As we have experience with double merles and dogs with disabilities our CEO has adopted them to save them from an otherwise questionable fate. We encourage you to donate not only to rescues like Arise who are willing to pull these animals out of shelters and bad situations, but to organizations like Keller's Cause a double merle rescue that assists with educating the public and supporting double merle owners.

All expenses including food are covered for your foster when you choose to open your heart and home to them.

Happy Monday! The kitties are on their way to be perfect little house cats. They've already began using the litter box and are figuring out what toys are! Reminder that these kittens will come fully vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and microchipped when they are ready to be adopted. 🐾

In light of recent activity in the animal rescue space, we are encouraging you to share photos of your rescued pets in the comments of this post! This is Kate's crew, minus one who didn't want to be photographed. All are rescues with three of them being deaf.

With the holidays coming and 70+ animals recently being pulled by Onslow County Animal Services and others being caught and put into private rescues, fostering is more important than ever. Shelters and rescues would love to see nothing more than to have every animal in a home and being loved on for the holidays. It also allows staff and volunteers to take a very much needed break. If you are wanting to foster please contact a local rescue or shelter. Below some of our local, trusted non profits are listed that could use a hand with fosters.

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗠𝗢𝗥𝗘 𝗬𝗢𝗨 𝗞𝗡𝗢𝗪! How Carolina PAWS Program assists our local TNR colonies.

You may have noticed we don't regularly stock cat food on our pantry shelf at The Blessing Shed. Instead, when cat food donations come in we bring them directly to locally managed TNR colonies. TNR is an acronym for "trap-neuter-release," and is a method of controlling the feral and stray cat population. Richlands has many colonies that are fed by those in our community wanting to help. Unfortunately, not also providing vet care and a proper spay/neuter can allow these colonies to blossom and become an issue within many neighborhoods. Unmanaged colonies can spread disease, lead to annoying behaviors such as marking bushes and homes, and otherwise cause a nuisance to a community.
Instead of providing food for unmanaged colonies, we bring food to colonies that are currently managed utilizing the TNR method and providing proper vet care. We realize this is not in everyone's budget, nor is it any one persons responsibility to care for animals dumped by others. However that doesn't mean we can't assist what is already here while we are still working on creating a community TNR fund, volunteer effort, and events for the future. By keeping cat food off our pantry shelves we can ensure that we are not encouraging feeding stray cats without providing for them further when it comes to healthcare for the time being.
One of the colonies we help support is right here in Richlands at our very own MAIL N MORE! They have made an incredible commitment to the feral cat community by not only providing food, but making sure they take advantage of the TNR method every chance they get as well as providing proper vet care when necessary. Their volunteer and out of pocket services to these feral and stray cats is something to be inspired by and we appreciate all that they do. If you'd like to donate to them directly, you can walk right in with cat food and they will be more than happy to use it to keep their colony fed.

Packing up lots of food tonight, this one will be labeled as LARGE BREED. Just look a the size of those kibbles! Hopefully this can help those in our area experiencing pet food insecurity with a Dane, Mastiff, etc.

𝗥𝗜𝗖𝗛𝗟𝗔𝗡𝗗𝗦, we have microchip scanning stations!

Thank you so very much to the teams at both Rhodestown Volunteer Fire Department and Richlands Volunteer Fire Department for allowing us the space to install these integral pieces of equipment in our community.

We also owe a massive thank you to Gus with Walnut Hills Studio for donating his time, skill, equipment, and materials to installing these stations.

Lastly, a thank you to 910 Sign Co for putting these sign designs to life in metal ready to handle any weather.

These microchip scanning stations are an initiative originally brought to life by Paws 4 Purpose, another local non profit doing incredible things in our community for pets and families in need. Please be sure to support their page and projects!

These two microchip scanning stations are possible due to the dedication and effort of those in our community donating towards a such a needed amenity. We did our best to place them in extremely accessible and safe locations, as well as equipped them with auto lights that will turn on at night for helpful accessibility.

This weekend we will be putting together an informational video on how to use the microchip scanner for both scanning found animals, and also updating your current pets microchip. Your microchips only work the best in an emergency if they have current information!

Thank you to those in our community who have continued to add donations to our shelf at The Blessing Shed! While we are able to add up to 30lbs of portioned bags each opening day thanks to donations we have on hand, we are still met with bare shelves at the end of the day and sometimes by mid day. There is a real need in Onslow County and while we await non profit approval status every single physical donation is so very much appreciated by those facing pet food insecurity.

For Giving Tuesday we are asking for dog food donations to help keep The Blessing Shed stocked through to the new year. As mentioned before, our cat efforts are focused on TNR but do accept cat food donations if given and give to TNR colonies and rescues. Items listed include dog food as well as the materials needed to bag and label the food to be placed in the shed.
