SD Gunner Fund

SD Gunner Fund The SD Gunner Fund was initially created to assist Veterans and disabled children with the financial expense of owning much needed service animals. Sgt. Kinard.

The SD Gunner Fund assists veterans, children living with disabilities, and first responders while inspiring disability awareness through public education and advocacy. The SD Gunner Fund assists veterans, children living with disabilities and first responders while inspiring disability awareness through public education and advocacy. Service Animals require a variety of necessary items in order t

o perform their service. Those items can include but are not limited to: vests, custom harnesses, other assistance items, veterinary visits, and more. Service dogs are trained to support individuals with mobility, hearing, psychiatric, and brain/neurological disabilities. These dogs are professionally trained to meet the individual needs of their partner and completes tasks such as opening doors, picking up dropped objects, assisting with daily dressing, or pulling a manual wheelchair. The SD Gunner Fund can also assist Veterans and disabled children with a variety of “other” financial assistance if needed. The SD Gunner Fund was started in 2014 by Britnee Kinard. Britnee is the wife and caregiver to her husband, Retired Sgt. Hamilton Kinard, and a full time mom to their two boys. The Kinard's eldest son, Blayne, was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, and Mixed Receptive/Expressive Language Disorder in 2013. He also suffers from Stephens-Johnson Syndrome. Kinard, a disabled OIF veteran, received his mobility service dog Gunner in 2013. The Kinard's experienced first hand the neglect the Department of Veterans Affairs, and their lack of approving the much needed service animals for our disabled veterans. “My family and I have struggled to navigate our way through the system, and we do not want anyone to ever have to go through what we've been through with the V.A. Service animals help Veterans like my husband so much, but the government refuses to recognize this." What the Kinard's didn't realize was that SD Gunner was also helping their son, Blayne, with his daily struggles. "SD Gunner helps me keep an eye on Blayne when he bolts from me," said Mrs. He also watches over my son when he sleeps, and runs to him when he screams. He is our guardian angel! If a parent of a disabled child or military family is in need, I want them to know they are not in this fight alone, and that we want to help!"

Today, we had the privilege of visiting St. Peter the Apostle Catholic School, Savannah, GA! We were joined by the amazing team from the Humane Society for Greater Savannah to educate the kids on the importance of volunteering, supporting rescue centers, and understanding the differences between service, therapy, and emotional support animals.

Our incredible dogs, SD Helo, SD Koda, and TD Emma, were also there to showcase their work and interact with the students. It was a great opportunity to spread awareness about these amazing animals and the work they do!

A huge thank you to the Humane Society of Greater Savannah for partnering with us and for their continued dedication to helping animals in need. We’d also like to extend our gratitude to the school for welcoming us and allowing us to be part of their day. Together, we are making a difference!

Another amazing Volunteer highlight this week!

Leilani Tenan
Georgia Southern University (RHHS)
Richmond Hill, GA

Being a military child means growing up in a unique environment shaped by the challenges and experiences of military life. These children often face frequent relocations, adapting to new schools and communities, and coping with the absence of a parent due to deployment. This lifestyle fosters resilience, adaptability, and a sense of pride in their parent's service. Military children also develop strong bonds with peers who share similar experiences, creating a supportive network that helps them navigate the complexities of their upbringing. Despite the challenges, they often carry a sense of duty and patriotism, contributing to their personal growth and understanding of sacrifice.

Leilani has been with our organization as a volunteer for many many years. She has earned numerous presidential awards for her volunteer service. She also has quite an amazing story to tell about her life and everything she has overcome.

We want to congratulate Leilani on being a semi-finalist in the 2025 military child of the year scholarship. To our knowledge, she is one of a few if not, the only local child in our area that has made it this far in the Military child of the year competition. She will be completing her interviews this week and if she has chosen, she will be awarded her scholarship in Washington DC in March! Such an amazing opportunity for an amazing young adult in our community!!
