I have a client that is unfortunately having to rehome this lovely lady.

Aspen is a ~2 year old, spayed female Great Pyrenees/Husky mix.

The good:
- housebroken
- LOVES her crate
- received 4 weeks of professional training and knows all of her basic commands (sit, down, stay, place, and recall)
- walks great on a leash
- LOVES people

The bad:
- is known to resource guard high value items
- does NOT do well with female dogs

She has been with this family for 14 months and they love her dearly, but she is progressively fighting more with the other female dogs in the house. Though she tolerates the male dogs better, the owners would prefer her to go a home with no dogs at all.

Please send me a message if you’re interested and I will pass along the owners information!

Meet Bunny 🐰 and Boo 👻 !

These two girls are housemates!

💜 Boo’s biggest concerns were reactivity towards people and dogs and resource guarding in the house (high value treats/toys, space, rugs) from her sister and her humans. Boo completed (and ROCKED) a 4-week board & train program with us, then her sister came right after to start hers!

🩷 Bunny’s main troubles were resource guarding things from her sister, jumping on guests and not coming when she was called. Bunny is on week 3 of her 4-week program and is doing fantastic!

Now that Bunny is in the middle of her program, we had Boo come back so that we can work on their problems together. This is typically how we like to work with multi-dog households (though not the *only* way, it is the best way!).

Do you have a multi-dog household and find yourself going crazy most days? Give us a call to help!

One of these things is not like the others 🤔😂😍

❓What do I need to pack for my dogs boarding/board & train stay?❓

Every dog that stays overnight with us receives their own dedicated locker for their belongings. Even though we are a small scale facility, this helps us stay organized and helps prevent misplacing belongings.

Here are the ONLY things you need to bring your dog:

✅ Their own food **in gallon sized zip lock baggies**
- we do NOT offer a “kennel” food. We require you to bring your dog’s food they are currently eating to avoid any stomach upset or G.I. issues.

If your dog is fed kibble, please prepare their food ahead of time in gallon sized zip lock baggies so they can fit in their locker. This doesn’t mean you have to prepare each meal in separate baggies though (unless you prefer to!).

We also can accommodate anything that requires refrigeration!

✅ Their favorite chew bone
- preferably something like a Benebone. This will be given to them in their crate or run to chew on in their down time.

Please note: we will NOT give your dog any smoked or cooked bones for safety purposes.

✅ A blanket from home
- If your dog can have a blanket without destroying it, please bring one! Having something to lay on with the scent from home can be soothing for your dog.

However, if we notice them starting to chew, rip, or destroy it we will remove it for safety purposes.

✅ Your dogs collar(s) and leash
- though we typically potty everyone in a slip leash for safety purposes, some dogs prefer to wear their own clothes to potty (ask almost any GSD 😂). If your dog has an E-Collar through us, you do NOT need to bring the charger.

Please note: we keep all of the dogs naked when they are playing and while in their crate/run, so if you have a GPS tag for your dog and notice that it is inactive… that is why!

✅ Any supplements or medications they are on
- we do not charge extra to give any supplements or medications, just please be sure to let us know that your dog needs these things!

Please do NOT bring:

❌ Large bags/containers of food
- we do not have the storage for big bags or containers of food

❌ Toys
- we have PLENTY of toys for your pup to play with while they’re with us (that get disinfected daily)

❌ Food/water bowls
- we also have plenty of bowls for food and water, including several different types of slow feeders (unless we specifically request you to bring their own bowl)

❌ Anything else that cannot fit in a 12” x 12” locker
- this includes the bag you bring their items in

If you have any questions about bringing certain items, please don’t hesitate to reach out prior to your dogs stay!

💅🏼 Here’s your monthly reminder to trim your dogs nails! 💅🏼

If you are unable to yourself, please ask your veterinarian to or find a local groomer.

Regular nail maintenance is important for your dog for a variety of reasons:

💅🏼 Pain and discomfort: Long nails can cause pain, especially when walking or running

💅🏼 Injuries: Long nails can get caught on objects and cause torn nails, which can lead to infection

💅🏼 Poor posture: Long nails can affect a dog's posture and gait, which can lead to chronic bad posture and injury

💅🏼 Arthritis: Long nails can stress a dog's joints, which can lead to arthritis

As always - please reach out to me if your dog has trouble allowing you to do their nails. I would be more than happy to do them for you, but would love to help you desensitize them so you can do them yourself 💜

08/27/2024

I swear each day I wake up to find yet another dog being abused or mistreated in the hands of a dog trainer.

Someone that takes hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of dollars from people who need help getting their dog trained and they turn around and are starving these dogs, physically abusing them, allowing and encouraging them to unalive other dogs or animals, not giving them water, not taking them outside to relieve themselves, making them sit and lay in their own urine and f***s and so much more unspeakable and unfathomable things.

Unfortunately, dog training is not regulated and quite literally ANYONE can claim to be a dog trainer. There are many unqualified people claiming to be dog trainers and willing to take your money without a second thought, but there are just as many (if not more) trainers that have the necessary experience, truly care and want to see your dog succeed.

This post is to give some insight on what to look for and how to pick a dog trainer.

1. See where your dog will be staying.

If the trainer can’t show you where your dog will be sleeping, playing, going to the bathroom etc… walk away.
Granted - I don’t allow in person tours of our kennel area due to the type of dogs that we get in, but I will pop up my live feed camera back there at any second and we have a video tour available as well. If they can’t provide that, walk away.

2. Ask them to interact with their own dogs.

This one can get overlooked sometimes, but if their own dogs are skittish or afraid of them, RUN away. Even as a dog trainer, my dogs definitely are NOT the most well trained dogs out there but I can guarantee you they always love being around me.

3. If you’re doing an extended stay/overnight program, make sure you can regularly visit with your dog.

For some reason within the training community, there is a stigma that the owner should not see their dog while they’re in training. In 99% of cases, this is SUCH complete BS for so many reasons. I’m allowed to say this because I was also brain washed to think the owners shouldn’t see the dog during training, but I am now so completely against that.

2 years ago we changed our Board & Train programs to Monday-Friday. The owners come in on Friday to receive a lesson to go over what their dog learned that week, then their dog goes home with them so they can spend time with them and practice together. Swapping to this style of B&T program we have seen; happier dogs throughout the program, dogs that retain their training by tenfold after they leave and owners that are encouraged to upkeep and continue training. Overall this means that their investment into training wasn’t wasted.

In the very rare case that we are having engagement issues, I may keep the dog over the first weekend but I have never had to go longer than that. Now I’m not saying that having your dog stay the entire length is a red flag, because it’s not. The red flag is being denied to see your dog while they’re in training.

If you aren’t getting weekly lessons with YOUR dog while they’re in an extended program, don’t count on retaining the HEAPS of information you’ll receive at the very end of the program because it’s simply too much for one session. Follow-up lessons after your dog has completed the program would be the absolute minimum that you should accept.

If the trainer refuses to let you see your dog for ANY reason while they’re with them… RUN TF AWAY.

4. Pick a trainer that shows their dogs.

Another one that gets overlooked but is very important. As a dog trainer, our own dogs are our blank canvas and we can use them to create magnificent pieces of art. Showing our dogs (whether that’s in Conformation or sport/performance events such as; Rally Obedience, Agility, Scent Detection, Obedience, Field Trials, Barn Hunt, PSA, Dock Diving, IGP, French Ring, Mondio Ring, etc) gives us the opportunity to show case that masterpiece and receive judgment on how well WE as trainers are, as well as learn how to get better.
So even if YOU don’t care to do those things with your dog, it’s important to find a trainer that does.

5. Trust your gut.

Always meet in person with anyone you’re considering hiring and do NOT go solely off of a phone call or text. If you get bad vibes, there’s usually a reason.

6. Seek out someone that continues their education.

Dog training will forever be evolving. Finding someone that continuously adds to their knowledge whether that’s attending seminars, workshops, shadowing under other trainers etc is very important! Imagine if a Doctor or a Veterinarian never continued their education after school, what types of ground breaking medicines or practices would they lose out on?

I’m sure I’ll p**s off a lot of other dog trainers by sharing this but, that’s not my problem. At the end of the day if this post helps even one person not have to go through the traumatic experience as some of these other dog owners who get their dog back as skin and bones, wounds all over them or worse; never get to hug their dog again, then I’ve done my part. ✌️

08/24/2024

When I ask someone what their exercise routine for their dog is (who the owner usually describes as challenging or difficult), the common answer is “they let them outside to run around in the yard” or “they play with our other dogs.” Maybe a “walk around the block” if they can walk the dog on leash.

This is not “exercise” for your dog. Take into consideration what your dog’s breed is used for. Is it moving livestock, hunting vermin, guarding territory or assisting in military operations?

While exercise is not the fix for behaviour problems, it is one piece of the puzzle. A dog has to exert that physical energy to release pent up tension in their body. Dogs adapt to exercise rather quickly, especially when young or with exuberant breeds.

So if you have a high energy, very capable, athletic dog who is only given time to ‘run around the yard’ or ‘a walk around the block,’ as their physical outlet… You are going to run into a lot of problems.

Your dog’s physical energy has to go somewhere. Whether that be productively through play, sports, different hiking spots/terrain to explore or barking at everyone passing by and being obnoxious to house guests. Which would you prefer?

Only a fraction of your dog’s mental energy will naturally be expended through the physical activities, depending on the individual dog.

It is equally important for your dog to have some sort of mental outlet such as obedience training, trick training or scent work. I personally do not use ‘enrichment’ toys as a viable option to expend my dog’s mental energy because… it doesn’t really do anything. Don’t get me wrong, it is a fun activity to do for our dogs and I definitely let them have those things once in a while but it’s more of a “treat” than anything else.

There has to be a balance between physical exercise and mental exertion. Most importantly, we need to ensure our dog’s get proper rest and recovery. Some dogs do not know how to ‘turn off’ and we have to teach them. Too often people think they have to give the dog more because they ‘still have energy’ when that is not what the dog needs.

If the dog has received acceptable physical exercise (60-90 minutes, can be more dependent on breed and lifestyle) and acceptable mental exertion, it is time for the dog to learn to decompress.

“I haven’t had time this week to work with my dog at all”

Guys, I get it - I truly do. After working with other peoples dogs 12-14 hours each day, the LAST thing I want to do is work with my own dogs.

As many of you know, I recently added a female puppy (Kayo) to our personal pack. I’m not sure if I’ve been spoiled by my boys or if the Dog Training Gods thought I needed a Tasmanian Devil to add to the mix but she is SPICY. Left to her own devices her favorite thing to do is pull me everywhere, play very rough with other dogs, shove her toy in their face, get the zoomies all in our house and she has no off switch (she is GO GO GO all the time).

I’m telling you all of this because I’m sure a lot of you experience the same behavior problems that I am, whether it’s with a puppy or adult dog.

If I want Kayo to be a well-mannered dog, I have to start NOW - not later. And this means working with her. Every. Single. Day. On the days I don’t want to. When I’m sick. When I’m tired. If I have a headache. No excuses. Otherwise, I’m the only one to blame for my dogs bad behavior continuing.

I didn’t get a lot of sleep last night and I was already going to use that excuse for her training session today. So instead - I popped her on a back tie while Komrad was on the treadmill and I vacuumed and mopped the training room. She was there for about 2 hours and some change.

I know this doesn’t look like your average “training session” but this is a very important part of learning an off switch - doing nothing. This was a task that I was already going to do, and by simultaneously “working” Kayo I was able to make my day significantly easier and it was a great opportunity for her as well.

You don’t have to have a long “formal” training session to see positive results in your dog (we usually recommend 5-10 minutes at a time). And sometimes asking your dog to “do nothing” is the best thing you can teach them.
