๐Ÿพ Emotional Health For Your Pets ๐Ÿถ

Over the next two months, we will be exploring how to keep our pets emotionally healthy!

Emotional health is an important part of your petโ€™s overall well-being. Just like humans, emotions can affect how your pet feels physically. Many people know that anxiety can cause gastrointestinal issues in their pets, but anxiety can cause more issues. It can manifest as aggression, inappropriate urination/defecation, self harming behaviors, and OCD behaviors such as licking or chewing areas and causing secondary skin infections. Our goal this month is to make owners more aware of the signs of anxiety in their pets, and to teach them how to give their pets the mental and physical enrichment that they need!

Obviously, every pet is different, and some pets may need more help with their anxiety than just enrichment. If your pet is dealing with severe anxiety, consider reaching out to us to set up an appointment with one of our doctors! We also have a dog trainer on staff who is happy to set up a consultation with you and your pet!

This month, we will be talking about our canine friends! Be on the lookout for posts about the signs of stress, environmental enrichment, and some fun games to play to stimulate your pet mentally! Next month we'll focus on our kitty friends and how best to help them emotionally.

What are you most looking forward to learning this month?? Are there certain activities or enrichment that works best for your dog? Let us know!! โ˜ฎ

Happy National Holistic Pet Day! โ˜ฎ๐Ÿพ

We love providing an integrative approach to veterinary medicine for our patients! Being able to include modalities such as acupuncture, ozone therapy, laser treatments, and working with Chinese herbals, helps give our patients that extra layer of support. Focusing on treating the pet as a whole creates a better path to health and wellness throughout their entire life.

We'd love to hear your favorite ways of incorporating a more holistic approach to your pets care!

It is with a heavy heart we wish Dr. Cresta Jones all the best as she transitions from primary care medicine to working urgent care full time. IVC has been so fortunate to have her on our team for almost 2 years.
The doctors at IVC have been working collaboratively to ensure the smoothest transition possible for you and your pets. Doctors Dayton and Lord look forward to continuing to provide the compassionate, quality care you are used to.

If you have any questions about this change, please feel free to call or email the office.

Marlin is our newest patient from Richmond Animal League. He's the tiniest, cutest little kitten who was found at just 3 weeks old and unfortunately is demonstrating signs of a neurological disorder.
Marlin has already had a few acupuncture sessions and amazes us every single time we see him with how well he's doing.
Earlier this week Marlin had his very first physical therapy session with Gail, one of our LVTs, to focus on strengthening his hind legs and overall mobility. Here you can see this little rockstar balancing like a champ on the physioball, which really helps with core strength and limb control. Gail also went over excersises that can be done at home so his foster mom can work with him every day!

Everyone show Marlin some love!! ๐Ÿฉต If you haven't done so already, be sure to like and follow our friends at RAL to support all the hard work they do for animals in need ๐Ÿพ

๐ŸŸ๐Ÿฅ•๐Ÿ„ NEW TREATS ALERT!! ๐Ÿฅฆ ๐Ÿ–๐Ÿฅฌ

Our dear friends at gifted us these beautiful treat jars to display in our exam rooms. Each one is filled with a different protein option from their line of Whole Food Bites.

As described from their website:

"Weโ€™ve infused high-quality proteins with vibrantly colored organic fruits and vegetables to create irresistible freeze-dried whole food bites. Feed them as high-value treats or a nutrient-dense meal topper."

These are appropriate for dogs and cats alike, so be sure to offer them to your pet during their next appointment!!! Nutrition plays such an important role in our overall mission and we're elated to offer such high-quality choices for our patients.

We're working on adding products to our retail space ๐Ÿ˜ƒ Stay tuned โ˜ฎ๏ธ

It's National Mutt Day!!!
A day so special it's celebrated twice a year!

Mixed breed dogs are often overlooked at shelters and rescues, so this day is meant to highlight them and raise awareness. If you're not able to adopt or foster, donating to or volunteering at your local animal shelter is always helpful!!

Do you have a mutt? We'd love to see them!!!
What's your favorite way to celebrate how special they are? ๐Ÿพ

Rudder's mom noticed him limping this afternoon. After doing x-rays, we did a laser treatment to help with inflammation and sent home pain medications for the next few days.

Rudder was a total rockstar in his doggles for his laser treatment!!

๐ŸŒธ๐ŸฆŸ New Product Alert!๐ŸฆŸ๐ŸŒธ

Summertime in RVA means bugs are out in full force!

We get asked all the time for natural ways to prevent and repel bugs as more people are wanting to stay away from using chemicals on their pets. While there are already some great products on the market, we wanted to create something we knew firsthand would be safe to use for our patients.

Our Flea & Tick Repellent Spray is blended in house, using quality pet-safe essential oils from animalEO
This is a cedarwood oil based product and is meant to be used topically on dogs and cats. It can be used alone or as an added layer of protection.

Be sure to ask about it at your next appointment!! Or buy a bottle when you're picking up a refill โ˜ฎ๏ธ

Watch out for your pup's paws this summer!!!!

๐Ÿพ Asphalt, metal, concrete, and rocky surfaces can get hot very quickly. Walk in grassy, shaded areas as much as possible.

๐Ÿพ Take walks earlier in the day or later in the evening.

๐Ÿพ Test surfaces by pressing your hand to the ground for 5-10 seconds. If it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them!!

๐Ÿพ If you see your pet lifting their feet regularly and shifting their weight that's a sign their feet are too hot.

๐Ÿพ Seek veterinary care immediately if your dog's feet are burned.

Have a fun & safe summer ๐ŸŒž

๐ŸŽ‡๐Ÿงจ 4th of July safety tips ๐Ÿงจ๐ŸŽ‡

Shelters around the country fill up during this time of the year because of frightened animals trying to escape the loud noises. More pets go missing during the 4th of July than any other time of the year.

Here are some things you can do to keep your pet safe:

๐ŸŒŸMost pets donโ€™t enjoy loud noises, but if your pet becomes extremely anxious, drools excessively, hides, or trembles, they likely suffer from true noise aversion. If your pet has an extreme reaction to loud noises, we may be able to help with medication or herbal remedies.

๐ŸŒŸIf possible, take your pet on a long walk earlier in the day or have activities planned to help tire them out before evening festivities. Keep your pets at home, inside, with white noise playing or loud music. Do your best with the timing of medications and/or supplements. Pet-safe chews, snufflemats, and treat puzzles are a great distraction!

๐ŸŒŸMake sure your pet is wearing ID and has a microchip that is registered with your current information. Having a microchip means that should your pet escape, thereโ€™s a far greater chance he or she will be returned to you.

๐ŸŒŸMake sure you have a clear, current picture of your pet just in case they do get loose and go missing.

๐ŸŒŸIf you are the one setting off fireworks please think of your neighbors and give them a heads up! Not knowing when/if fireworks are happening makes it incredibly difficult for pet owners to plan in advance.

๐ŸŒŸClean up fireworks debris in the yard before letting your pet out. Many animals will try to eat anything with an interesting smell, and that includes chemical-laden paper and plastic pieces from burst fireworks.

If you think your pet might need help managing this noisy holiday, call us at (804) 325-1600.

๐Ÿงจ Our office will be closed Thursday 7/4/24, so be sure to plan ahead! ๐Ÿงจ
