Taking your dog into dog-friendly stores is a great way to practice in public! In environments like this, you can do down-stays, heel work, proper greetings, and confidence building! All for free too!

Murphy learning to choose obedience instead of fixation. 😄
He’s still got more to learn, but he’s come a long way from where he started! 🙌🥳

Confidence building is VITAL if you’re wanting to advance your dog’s obedience. If they are to be expected to perform their skills/job promptly and with clear thought, they can’t also be scared of their environment.
In this video, Marsalee and her handler are working on confidently maneuvering across a large storm drain.
When working on things like this, your timing of release and reward are very important! If you release the pressure and move on from the current obstacle at the wrong time, it will actually work against you and make your pup less confident than when they started!
Confidence building exercise are also a wonderful way mentally exhaust your pup and exercise the strategy/logic part of their brain; resulting in a calmer and more relaxed dog.
If you have questions on how you can start doing this with your dog, message us and check out our Confidence and Handling events this summer!

1 minute of what Tripp, the 5 month old boxer puppy, has been working on these past week and a half.
He knows sit, stay, down, come, off, heel, no, and kennel! He’s very calm, and loves to wiggle. 😆 Started teaching him to roll over yesterday. That one confuses him. 😏

“leave it” means LEAVE IT! It’s not for you! Not now, not ever. If you tell your dog to leave something alone one minute, don’t confuse them by allowing them to have it the next minute.
It’s a hard lesson, but a very important one! Teaches your dog to be okay with what you’re giving them, and to not always want something else —which helps their focus on you, and in turn helps you with training!
Can you dog do this? Even if they’re jealous that the other dog is eating all of the goodies without them? 😏

Another thing he should’ve been taught as a puppy. 🫣
No worries though. He’s learning it now. 😂🫡

It’s VERY important to only say your cue word ONCE!! From there, help them find the answer and wait for them to settle in that position before releasing them. Doing these two things will help show your dog how to follow instructions quickly AND wait for further instructions. Allowing you to fill the pack leader roll.

Sam came to me to fix his aggression towards dogs and advance his obedience and responsiveness. I’d say he’s progressing well for just being here a week! 🙌

“As gentle as possible, but as firm as necessary.”
Always offer the lightest amount of pressure first (i.e. saying sit and giving a hand cue). As your dog doesn’t follow instructions, increase the pressure in 3 steps.
Here’s what those steps should look like.
1.) Say your negative sound and exaggerate your silent cue/hand signal.
2.) Step in towards the dog and repeat your negative sound.
3.) Correct your dog using the leash pop or something similar that your dog understands as a correction.
If, at ANY point, your dog does the right thing, mark and reward!! In doing this, your dog can start to become more dependable in their obedience “commands”.
Can you tell how I applied this concept in this particular video?
