Dog Command of the Day: Place

Place is known as a defined area (a towel, dog bed, blanket, etc) where the dog travels to with or without guidance to sit, down or stand “in place” and stay there until released.

Place is often referred to as “a crate without borders,” since the same rules that apply to the crate apply to the place command.

Place is an additional safety command that teaches impulse control, barrier safety and more. Place is a building block for other commands in more advanced obedience work.

🦴🐾Enrichment 101 🐾🦴

What is Canine Enrichment?

➡️ Enrichment is where you introduce new enrivonmental stimuli to your dog through means of adaptive active mental and/or physical measures.

What are the 5 types of Enrichment?
1) Social
2) Sensory
3) Nutritional
4) Occupational
5) Physical

What are some examples of Enrichment for Dogs?
- Lick Mats
- Frozen Raw Bones
- Snuffle Mats
- Cardboard Box Full of Newspaper
- Frozen Chews
- Puzzle Toys

🐾Dog Training Sequence of Commands🐾

Step One: Verbal Cue
- Sit, Down, Stay, Wait, Etc
- Only say the Command ONCE

Step Two: Hand Signal
- Hand going Up, Hand going Down, Fist in the air, etc
- Hand Signals should be sharp and fast

Step Three: Reinforcement
- Leash Pressure, Remote Collar, Body Pressure, etc
- Reinforcement should be direct and non-negotiable

(Repeat Steps 1-3 if not completed with more treat guidance as a lure)

Step Four: Marker Word
- Yes, Good, Etc
- There must be an infliction in your voice; a tonal difference

Step Five: Reward
- Treats, Ball Toss, etc

Let’s talk about ✨treats✨

Did you know different treats all serve a different purpose?

Indoor treats should always be low value to your dog and easy for them to work for out of your hand, like kibble.

Indoor enticer treats should be higher value than the lowest value treat for your dog, but should not surpass the value of a treat you use outdoors.

Indoor/Outdoor treats should be mainly used sparingly in between reinforcement with indoor enticer treats.

High Value Outdoor Treats should be used OUTDOORS ONLY!!! Keep these treats sealed in an airtight container, or safely stored away from your dogs! These can be additionally used as distractions for indoor training. These treats are meant for outdoor training, as they have a higher scent value and overall reward value to your dog.

The highest value outdoor treats should be used in cases of higher value reward protocols — for example: a high value leave it reinforcement. These treats should be used sparingly and stored separately from other treats.

Hi! Hello! Welcome All!!

My name is Castor, my pronouns are They/Them and I’m a local obedience dog trainer in Richmond, Virginia. I am licensed and insured as a trainer and pet sitter/walker through the city of Richmond.

My main focus as a trainer is providing the community with much needed accessible, accomodating and uniquely structured dog training that provides individual outcomes for the success of you and your fur-ever family.

My professional background in training goes back to 2019, working under various trainers in the area with largely different training styles and approaches.

My personal style of training is individually accommodated to the style of training that suits the dog’s and human’s needs as a pair. If I had to call myself under a specific category of training, I would label myself most closely as a LIMA trainer (Least Invasive, Minimally Aversive).

I offer a wide variety of services and packages to suit you and your dog’s needs. If there is something I currently don’t offer that you are interested in learning more about, feel free to message me with your questions!
