At about 9:25 last night, this person decided to leave a dog running loose on our property, during an overnight freeze warning.
Before anyone says "but maybe they thought they were helping." Straight up, they weren't. This is NEVER the right option. They set this dog up to fail. It was after our shelter closed, and if it weren't for sheer luck of a staff member driving by, this dog would have spent the entire night without shelter. We do not have a place for this dog. Literally. There is not a kennel, a crate, or a space to put one to humanely house more animals.
If you have any information about this dog, please let us know.

Around 4:48 this afternoon, this happened. The dog was dumped on our property. It then tried to cross Main Street and was running in and out of traffic. Multiple people tried to intervene, but since we aren't open, there was no way for them to reach anyone. This dog has no where to go. We don't have any kennels, or crates, or room to put a crate even if we wanted to. It is safe inside the building for now, but we desperately need to find the person in this video.
We don't know if this was a stray, an owner surrender, or what. A photo of the female dog is included in comments. Please contact the shelter with any information. This has been reported to Richmond Animal Control and RPD.
Remember our post about Hermes yesterday? Here he is having a fantastic play session with Kona, an almost 2-year-old Lab/Jack Russell mix. Both dogs are available for adoption, and would love to find their new homes!
PSA (cause we have to announce once again) : please do not dump animals on our property. We are expecting high heat warnings over the next few days. Our kennel staff is busy attending to all the animals in our care, and cannot check the premises for animals you dump. You are not "saving", "rescuing", or "helping".
This woman left cats in cages in the direct sun. Imagine if the one staff member there didn't hear her speed off and go out to check. For staff, it was right place right time. But that may not always be the case.
Thankfully these cats are safe, but we'd love it if this woman can make right on her "donation" and actually speak to staff so we can get the animals the care they need. We're trying our best, but situations like this only tax our resources even more, and make it harder for those who do this the right way.
Happy Black Cat Appreciation Day! We have so many awesome black cats to adopt. Don't buy into the stereotype. While these cats are absolutely majestic, the only spells they cast are on your heart. Come meet some today!
People always ask if its ever quiet here at the shelter. 😴🤫💤🛏
