Due to staffing limitations this week, we are behind on filling medication refill requests. If you're a client who has emailed or called in a refill request, we want you to know that it is in process, and our team will be hard at work continuing to catch up when we reopen next week. We ask that you avoid walking in for a refill unless you are completely out of a life-saving medication because while walk-in requests are typically filled while you wait, it does cause us to get further behind on those waiting in queue.

As temperatures rise in the Greater Richmond area this weekend, itโ€™s important to take care of yourselves and your pets. The high heat, plus the accompanying humidity, will make the heat index near 105 degrees on Saturday and likely even higher on Sunday.

On hot days such as these, be sure to provide plenty of water for your furry friends and keep outdoor time short and sweet. We advise only letting your pets out for quick potty breaks to keep them safe, and we recommend walking them in the early mornings or late evenings for only 5-10 minute intervals.

Pets carrying their heads or tails low is an indication of heat exhaustion, and they should be brought indoors to cool off.

A few more serious signs that may indicate your pet is suffering from heat stroke include blue gums, diarrhea, labored breathing, extreme lethargy and/or vomiting after being exposed to prolonged heat. If your pet shows any of these symptoms, you should seek urgent or emergency veterinary care right away.

Thank you to our DVMs here in our hospital and across the Richmond SPCA's programs! The lives of our patients and their guardians are better because of your compassion, knowledge and dedication to medicine.

Happy Veterinary Appreciation Day! We are so grateful for the veterinarians who dedicate their careers to improving the lives of animals. Our doctors* at the Richmond SPCA serve many roles: health care professionals, animal welfare advocates, educators, team leaders ... the list goes on!

Our veterinarians are essential to serving our community's pets and their guardians. Thank you to these incredible veterinarians and their amazing teams!

"Oral health is a window to your petโ€™s overall well-being." writes Lead Veterinarian Courtney Bowers, DVM. Unfortunately, the demand for surgical treatment for dental disease outpaces our capacity to schedule these procedures in our hospital, but guardians can take steps at home to make a difference in their pets' dental health. Read more on our blog, including our effort to provide clients with dental supplies to use at home.

"Count!? I can't count!"

We know, Biggie. We've got this! Though our patients might try, they're no good at inventory, so we'll be closed on Monday, April 1 for quarterly inventory. (No, really, not a joke.)

Though we're closed today, we're plenty busy! Normal operations will resume on Monday.
