Now that our sweet Elliot has found his home, we’d like to introduce you to Ricky Bobby, our longest-term resident! Ricky Bobby came to us in May 2021, and he’s been patiently waiting for his pawfect match ever since. 🐾 This sweet boy is super affectionate once he gets to know you, and he’ll show you just how much he cares by resting his head on your lap and asking for some extra snuggles.

Ricky Bobby’s top three favorite things? Cheese 🧀, naps 💤 and (his absolute favorite) WATER! His trainers say he’s a little water parkour expert as he loves to leap off rocks and into the river. 🌊🐶

Ricky Bobby is looking for a home where he can be the one and only pet, and he’d prefer a calm, adult-only environment. Since he needs a little more time making friends, he needs someone who will be patient and make multiple visits to get to know him prior to adoption. As a Patient Paws pet, his adoption fee is completely waived. That means if you’re ready to make Ricky Bobby part of your family, you can adopt him for FREE! 💙

Check out all of our amazing Patient Paws pets like Ricky Bobby who are waiting for their forever homes by looking for the blue Patient Paws icon on their profiles on our website. If you’ve got room in your heart (and your home) for a special pup, contact our humane center to meet Ricky Bobby or one of our other long-term residents! 🐕✨

After cats we transferred from partner shelters in recent weeks began showing symptoms of feline panleukopenia (or panleuk for short), our veterinary staff tested for this highly contagious virus and have taken immediate steps to protect our feline friends. We're temporarily closing a few cat rooms in our center and taking other measures to prevent the virus from spreading.

While we have more than 200 cats in our care, only 35 are currently available for adoption as we work to limit exposure. Four cats have tested positive, and three spaces in our center, where a total of 71 cats are housed, are quarantined for observation.

Panleuk is a virus that is so common that all cats are regularly exposed to it, but very young or unvaccinated cats remain especially vulnerable. When we have a suspected panleuk case, our shelter medicine and animal care teams work diligently together to contain the spread to other cats while providing intensive supportive care to the patient. Right now, we’re deep cleaning affected rooms while monitoring any of our cats who were potentially exposed and taking lots of extra precautions, such as using PPE.

There are several ways you can assist while we address this virus. Donations of all types of linens (towels, sheets, pillowcases) are especially appreciated, as are cat toys, because items that cannot be thoroughly sanitized must be disposed. These can be brought to our humane center during regular operating hours.

Despite the current situation, we still have many wonderful cats who have not been exposed who are waiting for loving, lasting homes. If you’re looking to adopt, come by this weekend to meet some of our sweet kitties!

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we take these extra precautions. As always, we’re committed to keeping you informed. 💙 Thank you for your continued support! 🐱💕

Order up! Taco Bell 🔔🌮 wants you to "Live Más" and place an order at our adoption desk right meow for one black and white cat to go. If she could choose any hot sauce, Taco Bell would be mild because she doesn't have a single drop of spice in her body. This sweet girl is extremely affectionate, asks for pets and is the purrfect lounging buddy. She won't leave your side and might even sneak in a little kiss 😘.

Taco Bell's pre-adoptive care including her spay surgery and vaccinations was generously sponsored by our friends at Patient First and now she's ready to go home and support your Taco Bell addiction. We must let you know that Taco Bell is a limited-time menu item, so make sure to stop by today to take her home! 💙

Popsicle is on vacation with a perfect unicorn couple. Though it's their first time fostering for the Richmond SPCA, Gwyneth and John's home is the ideal vacation spot for a stressed shelter dog because they don't have any kids at home or other pets. It's the sort of mythical home that's especially magical for dogs needing a break, so we call it a unicorn! 🦄

For a nervous dog like Popsicle, who is fearful of loud noises and strangers, boundaries are important, so when Gwyneth came to meet her first foster on Tuesday, our team demonstrated how to observe Popsicle's cues during petting to be sure she wants to continue. Three pets, then wait for Popsi to ask for more.

Popsicle is affectionate and though she wants to be close and even in a person's lap, she doesn't care for being picked up or moved around. Many people expect a small dog to accept being lifted and carried, making Popsi feel that she has to be extra firm in declaring her boundaries. Not with Gwyneth though, who is demonstrating that she cares deeply for this dog and her limits.

Popsi seems to be developing a sweet little crush on Gwyneth's husband, John. She's also ready to declare her love for the koi pond in their back yard and scouting for squirrels on their walks, of which their neighborhood provides plenty.

Do you know any unicorns who'd provide a perfect-getaway for a foster pup? Tag them!
