The first month of 2025 was a tail-wagging success at the Richmond SPCA, with many long-term pets finding their purrfect homes. The pawty continues as we celebrated even more notable adoptions last week including Push Pin and Fortnight as well as Ghibli, Gopher and Melvin (not pictured). In total, 43 cats, 22 dogs and two guinea pigs left our care to begin their next chapter. We are barking with joy as we cheer on our newest alumni and their adopters. Congratulations! 💙🎉

Meet Frida, our happy-go-lucky girl! 🐾 This 3-year-old social butterfly is all smiles and makes friends everywhere she goes. Her joy is absolutely contagious! If Frida had a dating profile, it would say the way to her heart is through her stomach. 🍖 It would also mention that she loves long car rides, spontaneous outings, and of course, being a true Sagittarius — always looking for her next adventure and living her best life. ♐️

Meet ForestGrump! This handsome boy is all purrs this morning while he looks for his own version of Bubba to be his best good friend. 🥹 What do you say ... can you be the peas to his carrots? 🫛🥕

If his name didn't already say it all, Mr. Grump needs to be in a home without young children as he can be particular about his petting preferences. Less is more with this cutie, but don’t let that fool you — he still loves getting plenty of love and attention and would make an amazing companion. 💙

ForestGrump is also positive for feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV), but don’t worry — cats with FIV can live long, happy, and healthy lives. 🐾

In response to the devastating fires in Los Angeles, animal shelters across California are working to clear space for displaced and injured pets affected by the heartbreaking disaster. Creating room for these animals is critical to reuniting families and providing urgent veterinary care to animals in need.

Today our transfer team was on the road to meet a rescue flight in Wilmington, Delaware, when inclement weather rerouted the plane to Philadelphia. They've now welcomed 10 dogs from California onboard our vans and are making their way back to the safety of our humane center.

Our veterinary and care teams will ensure these dogs are happy, healthy and ready to find loving homes. We can't wait for you to meet them in the coming weeks.

Fillion (aka "Philly" around here) is all tail wags for ! For long-term pets like Fillion, a little change of scenery goes a long way. Just like us, pets also deserve a little vacay, 🏖️☀️ and Fillion is currently living it up in foster care, soaking up some much-needed one-on-one attention in a cozy home. His foster shares:

"Philly is a gentle soul who loves walks, exploring, and of course, treats. He is an Olympic champion walker who stays right by your side even on very long walks without ever pulling. Even when other dogs are near and barking, he is totally well-behaved.

Once comfortable in a new environment, his affection and appreciation grows quickly. You can tell how well behaved he is because no matter how much he wants that treat in your hand, he always takes it very gently. Philly is very smart, and with a little patience, learns new skills willingly. At first he was very fearful of doggy doors, and refused to use them no matter what. But with treat rewards and a little patience, he was using them like an old timer in a week. He loves to be outside, even when it's chilly, and just comes in every once in a while to take a nap on his heated doggy pad.

I hope that someone recognizes the wonderful companion that Philly is and gives him the loving home he so deserves. Fostering loving dogs like Philly proves the old adage that the unconditional love that exists in every dog is a gift to whoever is willing to accept it."

Not only is fostering a gift to the guardian, but it is a gift for the pet! 🎁 We love seeing our pets' true personalities shine while away from shelter stressors. Fillion’s foster mentioned he’s been a total champ with other dogs while in his care, and really wants to be friends with all the pups he meets. 🐶🤝

Our adoption bell rang 55 times last week thanks to our dedicated adoption counselors who found homes for 35 cats, 18 dogs and two rabbits. It was a great week for many of our long-term pets like Duke and Zeb who found a place to call home. Steven, Diving Board and Ocean Eyes (not pictured) are a few of our other long-term residents who found their person just in time for Valentine's Day. Our tails are wagging with joy for our new alumni and their guardians! 🐾💕 Be sure to head over to our blog to see who else found their new bestie last week.

And for a "Fortnight" there he was, all smiles for ! 🎶

Fortnight is still here and it's his "Wildest Dream" to find his pawfect home! He has been in our care since April, but it doesn't get him down ... he knows how to "Shake it Off" because he knows "the 1" is out there somewhere! 🩵

This sweet boy can be a little nervous when meeting new people but he is such a gentleman once he gets to know you. Fortnight is beauty AND brains 🧠. He's incredibly smart and knows several tricks like sit, down and touch.

Because Fortnight can be a little timid, he needs to be the only pet in an adult only home.

Update: Adopted! 💙🤍💙🤍

Push Pin is on a sleepover with a potential adopter, so cross your fingers and paws for her! This pup is absolutely pawfect in every way, shape and form and will steal your heart with those sweet, sweet puppy dog eyes. She has one of those faces you just can't say "no" to, so be prepared to be a yes-man 😅💓. She has been in our care since September and is sooo ready to find her person. She can be a little shy but will give little butt wiggles with some treats and baby talks. 🥹

When Push Pin first came into our care, our veterinarian found that she had multiple tumors, all of which were cancerous. Our skilled doctors in our Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital were able to surgically remove most of the masses, except for two tumors that could not be removed without critically damaging her paw. Luckily, Push Pin was a good candidate for a new mast cell tumor treatment — an injectable medication that targets and eradicates cancerous cells. After medical attention and some time in foster care, Push Pin is now in remission and thriving!

For dogs like Push Pin who've been in the shelter awhile and have a hard time showing their true colors in the visiting room, our adoption counselors can send them on a sleepover to audition in a potential adopter's home. It's a win-win: If the sleepover turns into an adoption, great! If they get an overnight break from the shelter, also great! 💙🩵
