Our adoption counselors found homes for 72 pets last week including long term residents Roxanne and Mona Lisa. We're so excited for the 53 cats and 19 dogs who found their match, and can't wait to see who goes home this week. If you've been thinking of adding a furry friend to your family, now's the purrfect time. Our humane center is participating in the nationwide Clear The Shelters adoption and donation campaign. From Friday, September 6 through Sunday, September 8, adopters can set their own adoption fees for all adult pets. We can't wait to introduce you to our precious pets!

Thanks to all of the wonderful adopters who took home pets during our recent emergency Empty the Shelters event with BISSELL Pet Foundation, we were able to transfer 10 dogs from Marion, South Carolina after their shelter was damaged from flooding following Tropical Storm Debby. Dogs like Snickers, Reeses, Junebug and Daphne who were already homeless and awaiting adoption before the storm hit South Carolina, were evacuated and now will find lasting homes here in RVA. All dogs pictured are now awaiting adoption at our humane center. Stop by this weekend to meet these precious pups.
Another six dogs who arrived with this transfer are completing treatment for heartworm disease and will be ready to find homes next week.

This right here is sweet Bombette! Bombette is a 1-year-old spunky girl full of energy with a zest for life! She’s very playful and would do great in an active household. If you like hiking and staying fit (but also lots of cuddles!), Bombette is the pawfect girl for you!
You must know, Bombette is a princess and must be treated as such. 👑 She formally requests to be the only dog in the home with no young kids so she can get special royal treatment and all your attention. Bombette has been in our care since February and has never been more ready to find a home. We hope you’ll come meet her today!

When we learned of the temporary closure of the Petersburg Animal Shelter to confront a parvo outbreak, we reached out to the shelter to offer our support. They asked for our help with their cat population, so today we sent a transfer team to transfer the 14 cats and kittens in their shelter to our humane center. We applaud Petersburg's proactive response in addressing this outbreak and sharing it with the community so we can be part of a collaborative response to save lives.
These cats and kittens are settling in to their new accommodations and will receive thorough exams, vaccinations and sterilization surgery in the next few days before we make them available for adoption.
Last week, Amber, Karissa and Zoë from our volunteer management team volunteered down the street from our humane center at Feed More. They assisted with sorting baked goods and helped support Feed More’s mission by providing food to families that need it most. Thank you Feed More for everything that you do for the community and for giving our team an amazing volunteer experience!

🚨We need towels! 🚨 If you have any towels to spare, pets such as Jaws would be furever grateful for your donation! Towels are essential to us as we use them for cat bedding and cleaning purposes. We are open daily for donation drop-offs and appreciate your generosity!
Meet Chips! 🍟 Despite his name, he doesn’t get salty easily. In fact, our adoption counselors describe him as “the most sweetest boy ever” and once you meet him you’ll see why!
You may notice that Chips is down to one ear, which is due to a large mass that our veterinarian surgically removed, but he still loves getting his remaining ear scratched! Chips was also diagnosed with diabetes, but he's fortunately showing potential for remission.
Chips’ pre-adoptive care, which included testing, medications, vaccines and his neuter surgery, was generously sponsored by our friends at Patient First and now he’s ready to go home this ! Stop by our humane center and let Chips steal your heart!
Drum roll please! 🥁 🥁🥁 Although we left you on a cliffhanger last time, we are so fur-real this time! Our shiny new logo is here, and it couldn’t be more purrfect! All our pets, including these two purr machines have been counting down the days on their toe beans to share our new design. While Hickory and Elm (pictured) found loving, lasting homes yesterday, we have many more kittens waiting to celebrate our new look with you!
Our July Compassion in Action report is now available, and we couldn’t have done all this life-saving work without our incredible community. Thanks to you, our volunteers and our staff, we sheltered 653 homeless pets, provided 149 public training classes, and helped 2,675 patients at our Susan M. Markel Veterinary Hospital and 434 at our Smoky's Spay and Neuter Clinic.
Your support continues to help our pets as well as those in need of our services every month and we are so grateful!

After 304 days in our care, we celebrated Tater Tot's graduation to a new home yesterday. Though he'd been in our care since August 2023, his adoption came only 9 days after his foster stay with the Riesters, who recorded Tater's love of their backyard, both for zoomies and rest. A short stay in foster care can be just the thing that a long-term shelter dog needs to reset. Could you give one of our adult dogs a vacation? This week our shelter veterinary team fit Bartok with a set of wheels, the last step in making this 1-year-old dog who's paralyzed in his rear legs available for adoption. Bartok was skeptical for a short while, but soon he was loving his newfound mobility. If you are interested in giving Bartok a lasting, loving home, please contact our adoption center. #adoptrva

The kittens are coming, and thanks to Orphan Kitten Club, our shelves are well stocked with cat milk replacer ahead of our busiest time of year. Last year the foundation created by Kitten Lady gave us a generous, lifesaving grant that sets these orphans up for success.
