For the last Wednesday in we wanted to answer some of our most FAQ on safety when it comes to raw feeding.

Raw food needs to be kept frozen. Place the recommended feeding amount in the fridge to thaw.

Once thawed it will remain fresh for 3-4 days. After that discard ANY raw food that is left over.

Do not microwave raw food to try to speed up the process. This changes the nutritional value in the food.

Stainless steel bowls are best. (This goes for any food you feed) Stainless steel bowls won’t harbor any bacteria. Plus they are easier to clean. Just use soap and water. Stainless steel is also best for storing raw food in the fridge.

Clean your pet’s bowls once a day.

And just like with handling our own food- wash your hands before and after and clean your counter when you are finished.

When most people think of raw they think of frozen raw or putting together their own raw meal at home because that is what’s all over social media. But there are different types of raw and we offer all these options at RedRidge.

A frozen complete raw pet diet
Gently Cooked
Air Dried

And then there’s freeze-dried which you have to add water to.

There is no right or wrong way to feed raw. It’s whatever works best for you and for your pet and this may look different for every pet you have. If you need help trying to decide which one to feed your pet come in and ask any one of our RedRidge teammates!

Raw feeding has so many benefits; shinier coat, better digestion, less p**p, cleaner teeth and stronger bones and joints just t name a few.

A raw diet typically contains organ meat, bones, and vegetables which makes it naturally digestible. This means your pet can better absorb the nutrients. Dogs do best on a diet that is rich in protein and low in carbohydrates which is what a raw diet consists of.

One con of feeding raw? Cost. It can be expensive depending on which raw food you decide to feed, how big your dog is and/or how many dogs you have. But you if decide you want to feed raw but can’t afford the cost or simple don’t want to commit 100% to raw the good news is you don’t have to! You can add raw to your pet’s current diet in other ways. You can feed raw toppers, you can add fresh ingredients like eggs and blueberries to kibble, you can feed 50% raw, 50% kibble; 25% raw, 75% kibble (just make sure the kibble you are feeding has enough protein. Don’t know? Ask a RedRidge teammate next time you’re in) The possibilities are endless. Here are just two examples of how some of our RedRidge teammates include raw in their pet’s diet.

Tomorrow is August which is also known as “Rawgust.” Rawgust was started in August to educate pet owners about raw food and to encourage them to try raw with their pets.

Every Wednesday in August we’ll have a post explaining the different benefits of feeding raw and we’ll highlight some of the raw products we carry here at Redridge.

What does it mean exactly to feed raw? It can be confusing at first if you are just starting out but feeding raw can mean something different to everyone. It can be working with a nutritionist to make a complete raw diet at home, it can be buying a completely balanced raw food at a local pet store or it can even be feeding kibble but adding raw food as a topper like eggs, blueberries and bone broth just to name a few.
