July 4th can be a lot of fun but can create a decent amount of stress in our companions. Arlo and Fig both have experienced some anxiety in their lives (as evidence by the length of Arlo's tongue and Fig's very concerned expression). That anxiety can vanish with proper planning (have you ever seen anyone more relaxed)?

While enjoying the holiday, here are some tips to ensure your pet is safe and happy!

- Contact us for anxiety medications before they are needed *NOTE that our office is closed Friday, July 4th*
- Secure pets inside to avoid firework injuries or escape
- Have identification tags on pets, a microchip registered to your current address, and recent photos ready in case of escape
- Avoid sharing unsafe or excessive treats that may lead to toxicities, blockages, or GI upset (and secure trash!)
- Know your closest emergency hospitals in the event they are needed

We also ask that you are considerate of your neighbors and local wildlife who will be upset and injured from fireworks.

*our office will be closed Friday, July 4th and open again Saturday, July 5th for scheduled appointments*

Have you ever heard of a condition called Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease? This is a condition that actually affects both humans and cats. In cats, it is the avascular necrosis of the femoral head - which is a fancy way of saying the blood supply to the head of the thigh bone is cut off, leading to bone cell death. When these cells die, they weaken the bone which leads to fracture.

This handsome troublemaker is Tiberius. He came to us severely lame on his right hind limb. Radiographs revealed a complete fracture of his femoral neck likely secondary to Legg-Calve-Perthes Disease. The surgery to fix this procedure is actually just removing the connection of the thigh bone to the hip in a procedure called a Femoral Head and Neck Ostectomy (FHO). This creates a false joint, eliminates the pain, and lets Tiberius return to being the mischief maker that he is. The procedure hasn't slowed down his appetite at all.

Meet Ruby! She is an unusual kitty in that, since birth, she was found to have a persistently wet belly and never seemed to p*e normally. Can you guess what was going on?

Ruby had a patent urachus! This is a tube that, in utero, connects the bladder to the outside placenta world. It allows the developing fetus the ability to keep the bladder empty. Normally this tube closes down as the fetus develops. Sometimes, it does not close down. When this happens, the bladder empties out of the tube constantly. As you can imagine, this creates a huge problem with urine scalding and infection.

We performed a resection of that tube and are happy to report that little Ruby is p*eing normally and continues to be an energetic wild child who will not be contained.
