THE ANIMAL WELFARE LEAGUE: What We Stand For

The Animal Welfare League Inc. of Richmond was created in June of 1944 by a group of women who were concerned about animal welfare in the Wayne County area. In service for nearly 70 years, the Animal Welfare League has the longest running animal shelter in operation serving the Wayne County area. As of 2014 we are able to proudly announce that we are a

no kill shelter. The original shelter was on Cart Road just north of Richmond. Due to the small size of the building the shelter was relocated to its current site on Chester Boulevard which had served as a veterinarian clinic which meant little initial remodeling. Cement walls were put up between kennels to prevent the spread of disease which is important for housing strays for the City and County animal control officers. Additionally, other remodeling included tearing down a wall to make a large puppy room, new flooring throughout, new roof and other routine maintenance to preserve the appearance of the shelter. In 2002, a new addition was added containing 21 new kennels, a feed room for storage and new stainless steel cages for puppies and cats as well as a new furnace and air conditioners to accommodate the new section. The upgrades and maintenance allow the Animal Welfare League to better serve and house our county's stray and unwanted animals. At the Animal Welfare League we do our best to insure animals brought to us find good homes. Unfortunately, there are not enough good homes for all the unwanted animals in Wayne County. So we reach out to other shelters and rescue for help. Due to an explosion of unwanted animals, in 1997 our Board of Directors made a conscious decision to institute mandatory spay and neutering for all animals adopted from our facility. Although this decision has slowed the overpopulation it is nowhere near what it should be. The Animal Welfare League offers a spay/neuter program for all adoptions. As a nonprofit organization, donations are accepted and greatly appreciated. Items needed include: cat litter, towels, blankets, news papers, aluminum cans, old playpens, dog and cat toys, litter pans, and monetary donations of any size. Your contributions may be dropped off or mailed to The Animal Welfare League, 1825 Chester Blvd, Richmond, IN 47374.
