DOG PERMIT UPDATE: The Senate has set THIS SUNDAY as the deadline for the budget and amendments. We don't know exactly when the dog permit amendment will be heard and voted on by Senate Finance in the next couple of days, but it will be. If you haven't already called or emailed or visited, please do it NOW. If you have, do it again!
The Dog Permit amendment is getting ready to be heard in Senate Finance Committee so we need your help right away. The proposed permit system affects "any person who hunts, chases, or pursues any game animal or nuisance species with a dog. This is huge. Senator Marsden, the sponsor of the bill we just defeated, is the sponsor of this as well.
If it passes, it will give DWR the authority to establish a permit system and DWR will get to decide. This opens the door for “George Plan” type restrictions or more. We know what has been discussed and/or proposed during the Hound Study. These include:
*Hound Hunting Parcel Registration system, stating that on private land to be hunted with deer or bear dogs, the property must be registered by the hunt club or property owner through DWR.
*Acreage restrictions for hunting with hounds;
*Requiring GPS collars, branding or other methods of marking your dog;
*Additional identification tags beyond those currently required
*Marking of vehicles
*“Three strikes and you lose your permit” punishment.
Folks, this is a badly written amendment with unknown costs and unknown regulations if it passes. The only thing we do know is that a permit system WILL affect our ability to hunt with hounds.
Call, write, and visit Senate Finance and tell them to Vote NO on SB30 Item 367 , the dog permit amendment!
