We will be closed this Friday, January 10, due to inclement weather. We will have a doctor on call for emergencies. During this cold weather we would like to remind you of two very important words during this time: MODERATION and HYDRATION.

When the weather gets cooler, it is a knee jerk reaction to start feeding hay to horses that have otherwise been on pasture for the summer. Please use MODERATION when starting them back on hay. Star with a small amount (1/2-1 flake) twice daily and build up for about a week or two before putting out a round bale.

When its cooler, horses don't drink as much. This is where HYDRATION comes into play. Some ways to increase their water intake is to add electrolytes or salt to their diet. Another way is to add enough water to their feed to make it an oatmeal consistency. Remember: Wetter is better!!

We also recommend filling up your water tubs on Thursday!

If your horse has never been vaccinated or if it has been longer than 6 months since their last vaccine, please consider having your horse's EWT-WN (Eastern and Western Encephalitis/Tetanus/West Nile) booster done.

The State Veterinarian’s office received laboratory confirmation from NVSL of the 5th case of Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) in SC in 2024. The 20 yr. old Belgian Mare from Charleston County had an unknown vaccination history. Unfortunately, it had to be euthanized.

Be cognizant that after the departure of Debby from SC, there will be a lot of standing water, attracting mosquitoes, so we may see a spike in Encephalitis cases.

Good Morning!!
Just a couple of reminders for the cold weather:

1. For horses, good water intake is essential during cold weather. To encourage drinking here are a couple of tips:
a) To encourage your horses to drink during this cold snap, please add a tablespoon of salt or electrolytes to their feed once daily.
b) Another way to increase water intake is to soak there grain in hot water. This will also help to produce heat in their bodies.
c) Remove ice from outside water tubs and if possible top up with buckets of hot water.

2. Feeding extra hay is a good way to help horses produce body heat.
a) If you are going to give extra hay, please start today giving 1 extra flake one time daily. This way there is less chance for them to gorge themselves when they have a lot in front of them this weekend.

3. Provide a shelter or a wind break if possible.

Stay warm and safe!!!
