In the realm of equine grace, a vet’s embrace
A guardian of steeds, with wisdom to chase
Through valleys of ailments, a healer’s steady hand
Kind owners by their side, a noble, blessed band

In the depths of stables, where shadows lie
The vet's solemn vow, a lullaby
To mend the broken, to soothe the pain
With knowledge delicate, like a golden mane

Yet it is not the science alone that heals
But kind owners’ devotion, the love that appeals
To the spirits of horses, gentle giants in our care
A poetry of connection, beyond compare

Oh, noble creature, wise and free
Your trust in us we guarantee
We’ll mind your ailments, heal your woes
With love that only the heart knows

For in the sacred bond we find
The harmony of humankind
Where owners kind and patients patient
Ignite a magic so inherent

Let us ride upon the winds of compassion
Guiding horses through each affliction
The power of healing, ever so vast
In veterinary hands we hold steadfast

Merry Christmas all, -Dr A

Is your horse microchipped? Should it be?
There are many reasons horses are microchipped: sometimes it is part of a breed registration, other times it is because you as a horse owner wants to be sure that you are contacted if your horse is lost or missing. It is a simple procedure, just like in dogs or cats, and can help you be reunited with your animals should they become lost. With the recent wildfires, it is a good reminder that this is an option. Call us for more information, and if you have a horse with a microchip who is one of our patients call us and let us know so that it can be added to their records!

Spring has sprung! You know what that means: It is time for spring vaccines. Let us help you in keeping your horses happy and healthy.

Ask Dr Alice about developing a customized vaccine program for your horse based on its environmental exposure and other factors. Coupled with other routine services and check-ups, veterinarian-administered vaccines are always safer, easier and a better value in the long run than doing it yourself.

With spring only a few weeks away (🙌), it’s not too early to start thinking about a deworming plan for your horses.

If deworming is something you’ve been doing the same way for as long as you can remember, this year we encourage you to break tradition and work with your veterinarian instead. Thanks to tools like the f***l egg count, your horse doctor can help you devise a treatment tailored to the needs of your equine friend plus monitor the efficacy of the dewormer used last. And before you dismiss this notion because you’ve been “doing it for years,” you should know that the old-school approach to deworming is quickly becoming outdated—not only a waste of money but it also builds drug resistance in the parasitic fauna of equines, which means we are running out of drugs that can effectively help us control parasite infections.

For more information, the AAEP Parasite Control Guidelines can be found on our website at https://aaep.org/document/internal-parasite-control-guidelines
As always, consult your equine veterinarian to learn more and for questions specific to your horses!

A dusting of snow on the Caring Call statue at reminds us that veterinarians who treat cows and other large animals frequently work in all types of weather when circumstances call for on-location animal care. The statue is also the only bronze statue in the country depicting a human administering medical care to an animal.

Ready or not, fall is right around the corner! As a horse owner, the best part about this time of the year is knowing we won't have to deal with as many insect-related issues. However, now is also the time to start thinking about housing, nutrition and preventative health strategies suitable for the arrival of winter.

Your equine veterinarian is one of your greatest allies this season: be sure to give them a call soon to discuss vaccination and deworming protocols appropriate for your horse’s situation; use this opportunity to chat about recommended changes in nutrition and exercise program as well!
