Indy came to us 2 weeks ago as an emergency from camp bow wow. did an AWESOME job recognizing that Indy’s stomach was getting bigger. This x-ray revealed a GDV or gastric dilatation volvulus. A GDV is a life threatening condition where the stomach is filled with gas and twisted. This is one of the few conditions where I stop EVERYTHING I am doing and go into surgery. Indy was immediately prepped and rushed into surgery where her stomach was unrotated and deflated and her spleen was removed. Unfortunately, it was noted during surgery that secondary to the GDV that a part of her stomach was no longer healthy and was going to need a second, more specialized surgery. So we transferred her to AERC in Flowood where Dr. Kettleman went back into surgery with her and removed 25% of her stomach. She did AWESOME through the whole process and her mom took amazing care of her afterwards. She came in yesterday to have her sutures removed! We are so happy that she survived this scary situation. Oh and she turns 1 year old this week! HAPPY BIRTHDAY INDY!!! We love you!!

We thought that since we haven’t “updated” our family photo from the original picture taken four years ago it was time to do so! Meet the people behind the page and our clinic. Check out the original post for some life updates!
What life updates do you have to share?!?
Meet the people behind the page!
At the Highland Vet we believe in a clinic that offers high-quality service with a small-town feel. In order to create that environment, we believe you have to know someone! So, get to know the The Highland Vet family!
Dr. Megan Malone:
Dr. Malone is the owner and operator of The Highland Vet. She obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Mississippi State University in 2010. Following graduation, she worked in Dallas, Texas, for three-years at an upscale, high-volume clinic seeing cats, dogs and exotic animals. She also worked part time at a local emergency clinic.
In 2013, Dr. Malone moved back to her hometown of Madison, Mississippi. Since then, she has been working on cats, dogs and the occasional pocket pet. She has a special interest in internal medicine and geriatric care. In 2017, she realized that more and more cats and dogs were having to be euthanized due to arthritis and other geriatric issues. Realizing that western medications only resolved chronic issues for a short amount of time, she looked to other options for a long-term solution to help her patients have a better quality of life and possibly even a longer life. Her search lead her to the world of Eastern and alternative medicine.
In Dr. Malone’s spare time she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, exercising, and reading.
Kyle Malone:
Kyle worked as a police officer in Ridgeland, Mississippi, for three years before deciding to go to law school. He obtained his law degree from Mississippi College school of law.
For eighteen years Kyle has actively served in the Mississippi Army National Guard. He deployed to Iraq from 2008 – 2009. He is currently serving as a full-time officer in the JAG Corps. When he is not working, he enjoys spending time with his family, grilling, and exercising.
Brock Malone:
Brock is the wild child of the bunch. As an active four-year-old, he is always playing and trying to climb the walls because he is spider-man. Brock loves to play with his superheroes, have nerf gun wars with his dad and cuddle with his mom. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, it is always a toss-up between spiderman or batman!
When he is not running around, he enjoys cuddling with his pups and watching Power Rangers!
**(Updated)**—Now, at eight-years-old, Brock is no longer the wild child. He is kind-hearted and loves playing video games. He loves baseball, his family, and tubing!
Grayson:
Being born in 2020 was no easy feat, but he is adjusting well. He loves his older brother and learning to do new things every week! His favorite thing in life is his food and getting into trouble!
**(Updated)**—Now four, Grayson has firmly replaced Brock as the wild child!! He loves movies; specifically, Ghostbusters (the original 1984 film) and The Nightmare Before Christmas.
He is an outdoors kid! Playing in the dirt, wrestling with his dad and getting on the boat are just a few of his hobbies! While wild, he is kind and caring… sometimes! 😂
