National Cat Lady Day is celebrated on April 19 each year. It shines a light on the bond between women and their feline companion, while aiming to take back the phrase "cat lady" and its traditionally negative stereotype. Today, being a “Cat Lady” signifies independence, assertiveness and a refusal to conform to societal stereotypes, making it a badge of honor. We love our cats!

MATERNITY LEAVE LAUNCH COUNTDOWN!
Standby for launch into the land of sweet baby smells and lullabies for our Dr. Chloe Emery. Dr. Chloe’s new arrival is expected in May but might be coming a bit early. She is working part-time hours for now and hopes to return full-time in early July. In the meantime, our team of great veterinarians, techs, groomers and staff will be holding down the fort at both Lakeland Animal Clinic and Northeast Animal Hospital — they all look forward to caring for your beloved pets.

IS HE THE CUTEST??
Did you know that Angora rabbits are one of the oldest domesticated rabbit breeds? At Northeast Animal Hospital, we welcomed a new patient — Oreo Dumbledore Bryson — for a check-up (We mean, really! Look at him!). This adorable bunny is a 10-week-old English Angora rabbit. There is some evidence of Angora rabbits during the time of the Romans (since at least 100 BCE). Angora rabbits have a certain recessive gene that causes their soft and silky fur to grow rapidly, at about one inch every month. Though their origins are not known for sure, English Angora rabbits are thought to have originated from Ankara, Turkey (previously called Angora). We are happy to report that Oreo is in GOOD health; and has a “sibling” in Jewels (see sunglasses!). Remember, we provide expert veterinary care for all critters (regular and exotic) at Northeast Animal Hospital, and our sister practice, Lakeland Animal Clinic. Always call us for an appointment!

HUG YOUR DOG DAY!
Our dogs deserve all the love and affection we can give them, which is why there’s a special day dedicated just to hugging them. It’s April 10: National Hug Your Dog Day. Hugging your dog releases a hormone in both pup and person called “oxytocin,” informally referred to as “the cuddle hormone.” Not only does a good tight squeeze strengthen your bond, it shows your pet that you care. Today is a day to celebrate your dog for all they do. So grab your dog and give them an extra cuddle today!

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month
More than a million pets in the United States have heartworms. Let that sink in, because it is one of the most horrible statistics regarding our furry friends. Heartworm affects an animal’s health and quality of life long after the heartworms are gone. These creatures are heartless in what they do. The American Heartworm Society (https://www.heartwormsociety.org) reports that, typically, most pet owners would not knowingly put their pet at risk to become infected with the deadly disease, but millions of these same owners fail to protect their pet from the infestation. For a disease that is easily prevented, there are no excuses. See us to determine the best heartworm prevention treatment for your pet.

OUR CLINIC BEAUTY
Everyone who comes to Northeast Animal Hospital is welcomed by pretty Peggy, our lovely clinic cat. Recently, Mark Simon brought his feline friend Jazmine in for a check-up and he was struck by Peggy’s beauty. Thanks, Mark, for snapping these pics of our girl. In the bottom right photo, Peggy is having a staring contest with Jazmine (who is in her carrier and not very visible to us!).

LOOKING GOOD FOR 84 YEARS OLD
This fine-looking Jack Russell Terrier is Buddy Moffitt – who is 17 years old (84 years in small dog years!). Buddy came to Northeast Animal Hospital for his annual check-up — and you can see that coming each year is working great for Buddy! We should all be so spry at that age. Be sure to bring your pets in each year for their annual visit.

EXCELLENT VETERINARIAN DIAGNOSIS; GOOD TIP
When this pretty boy Chewy Duckworth came to Lakeland Animal Clinic in late February to see Dr. Katy Grace Abbott, his person said Chewy was lethargic and had decreased appetite. Fortunately for Chewy, Dr. Abbott was on the case and ordered bloodwork, plus did a physical exam. The diagnosis: poor Chewy had anemia secondary to fleas. Dr. Abbott ordered antibiotics, steroids and Bravecto® Plus. After a few weeks of treatment, we are happy to report Chewy is fully recovered, as you can see. It should be noted that Chewy is an indoor/outdoor kitty and is a prime example of why ALL cats need to be on flea and tick prevention, even during winter months. You can get your flea and tick meds right here at Lakeland Animal Clinic and here at Northeast Animal Hospital.

SALON STYLING STARTS EARLY
Newton Martin, an 11-week-old Bernedoodle, came in for his very first puppy groom! Newton’s owners do an amazing job raising him by starting him young for grooming. He’s not quite big enough for a full haircut, but when he is, he’ll be comfortable with the process. After everything was done, he even got to have some puppy play time!
Newton also got his next set of puppy boosters while he was at Lakeland Animal Clinic. Starting early on grooming and making sure your pup is vaccinated help ensure a long, happy life. We offer grooming at Lakeland and at our sister practice, Northeast Animal Hospital. Make your appointment today!

NATIONAL PUPPY DAY
Observed each year on March 23rd, National Puppy Day celebrates the unconditional love and affection puppies bring to our lives. Their cuddles and wiggles make us smile and without a doubt, there are squeals of delight when there are puppies around! The day also brings awareness to the need for care of and homes for orphaned pups as well as to educate people about the horrors of puppy mills across the country. Puppies are a big responsibility. Be sure to consider everything involved and adopt from a shelter. The puppies there need love and a home just as much as any other and they grow into loyal pets, too!

DID YOU KNOW?
When it is spring in the Northern Hemisphere, it is autumn in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. At the spring (or vernal) equinox, days and nights are approximately 12 hours long, with daytime length increasing and nighttime length decreasing as the season progresses until the Summer Solstice in June (Northern Hemisphere) and December (Southern Hemisphere).

WEARIN’ OF THE GREEN
Did you know Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated in more countries than any other national festival? Modern celebrations have been greatly influenced by those of the Irish diaspora, particularly those that developed in North America. On Saint Patrick's Day, it is customary to wear shamrocks, green clothing or green accessories. Saint Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish.

A TRUE GAME CHANGER
Ready to adopt a fabulous Orange Tabby cat? We’ve got a good one — just a year old — that is looking for his fur-ever home. Orange Tabbies are generally known for being outgoing, affectionate and super friendly. This guy is just that. He is not just a lap cat, but is a social butterfly who loves to interact, and obviously play foosball. Interested in adopting? Call or text this boy’s keeper – Britton McKnight – at 601.451.2121. Be sure to identify yourself and say, “I’m game!”

HONORING K-9 VETERANS
National K-9 Veterans Day, March 13, is a day set aside to honor commemorate the service and sacrifices of American military and working dogs throughout history. It was on March 13, 1942, that the U.S. Army began training for its new “War Dog Program” —also known as the "K-9 Corps" — marking the first time that dogs were officially a part of the U.S. Armed Forces. The rest, as they say, is history. The dogs of war span centuries and include such heroes as Sgt. Stubby, the original war dog; Chips, the most decorated dog in World War II; Lex, who retired with his fallen owners’ family; and Cairo, the Navy SEAL working dog who was part of the Osama bin Laden raid.

BLAME BENJAMIN FRANKLIN!
The idea of aligning waking hours to daylight hours to conserve candles was first conceptualized in 1784 by Benjamin Franklin. In a satirical letter to the editor of The Journal of Paris, Franklin suggested that waking up earlier in the summer would economize on candle usage and calculated considerable savings. In 1895, New Zealand entomologist and astronomer George Hudson proposed the idea of changing clocks by two hours every spring to the Wellington Philosophical Society. In 1907, British resident William Willett presented the idea as a way to save energy. After some serious consideration, it was not implemented. But it certainly is today!
