HAPPY LABOR DAY!
Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. The holiday is rooted in the late nineteenth century, when labor activists pushed for a federal holiday to recognize the many contributions workers have made to America's strength, prosperity and well-being. Sparked by the labor movement in the late 19th century, Labor Day became a federal holiday in 1894. Northeast Animal Hospital is closed today in observance of Labor Day. For emergencies, please call either 601.939.8999 (Animal Emergency & Referral Center) or 601.790.1918 (Urgivet Emergency Vets of Madison).

REMEMBERING BELOVED PETS
The death of a beloved pet, whether it’s the family dog, a furry kitty, or something a little more obscure, is a sad occasion. Rainbow Bridge Remembrance Day on August 28 is the day that we remember the pets that are no longer with us. Whilst the pain of losing a pet somewhat heals over time, they are never forgotten, and today is their day. The day was founded by author Deborah Barnes as a way for people to share their memories of the pets they have lost. However, the heartwarming message of the “Rainbow Bridge” comes from a poem written in 1959 by Edna Clyne-Rekhy of Scotland when she was just 19 years old and mourning the loss of her beloved Labrador Retriever, Major.

IT’S NATIONAL DOG DAY!
Did you know that more than 63 million households in the United States have dogs? Dogs are wonderful companions full of energy, love, and personality. There’s a reason why dogs are referred to as a person’s best friend. There’s no better way to celebrate our furry friends than National Dog Day. You can show your four-legged friend how much you care by giving them extra hugs or throwing a celebration. Show us your great dogs!

WE SEE THEM AS SPECIAL
International Blind Dog Day happens every year on the 23rd of August. It seeks to assemble the owners of blind and partially sighted dogs in celebration of their visually impaired furry companions. Like humans, some dogs are born blind, while others lose their vision in one or both eyes because of age, trauma or diseases. Fortunately, most quickly adjust to their new reality and can live long, happy lives without losing most of their independence. The first International Blind Dog occurred in 2017. This was exactly nine years after the first-ever cornea implant on a dog.

National “Take Your Cat to the Vet Day” reminds us how much we love our friendly, furry, kitty companions. In fact, we love them even if they’re not that furry — or friendly, for that matter! And since we’re responsible for their health and well-being (they can’t very well make an appointment to see the vet on their own,) we appreciate August 22 a lot. We recommend an annual check-up for your kitty and yearly vaccinations. Don’t wait — make your appointment today!

A FIRST FOR OUR VITO
As you know, Dr. Chloe Emery is an ANIMAL LOVER — from the scraggliest rescue to the most elegant cat. She and hubby Gray are owned by their Bulldog, Vito, whose AKC registered name is Cherokee Legend Langston (guess you can see why he’s called Vito!). At 10 months of age, Vito attended his first real dog show in Hattiesburg and we are proud to report he won the “Best of Winners” from the Bulldog classes three days in a row, and is now well on his way to his AKC championship. Hundreds of dogs from different breeds recognized by the American Kennel Club were in Hub City for the Crawfish Cluster All-Breed Dog Show, hosted by the Greater Hattiesburg Kennel Club and the Meri-Miss Kennel Club. Vito was supported by a large group of admirers, who all wore special t-shirts created by Eden Travis. Vito’s handler/trainer/co-owner, Adam Protos, is a good friend of Dr. Chloe and a client at Northeast Animal Hospital and Lakeland Animal Clinic. Congrats, Vito!

HANK IS FEELING MUCH BETTER
This little cutie, Hank Miller, was recently diagnosed with a UTI (Urinary Tract Infection) and came to us for treatment. He was here with his fur person, Wendy, for a recheck… and we are happy to report he is feeling much better. Never hesitate to bring your beloved pets to us if you think there may be a problem. We are here to help.

National Black Cat Appreciation Day
It's National Black Cat Day today, August 17! Black cats need a little positive PR, as their reputation as an omen of bad luck is well-known (and unearned, frankly). Let’s celebrate these beautiful black cats. And consider adopting one.

MINI-AUSSIE EXTRAVAGANZA
Dr. Chloe and her team provide expert care for moms-to-be, helping ensure a good delivery and start for puppies. Mother Oakley (not shown here) came in for an X-ray to get a head count a week before these five little cuties were born. These Mini Australian (American) Shepherds, owned by Barry Lunn, came back to us as they were being weaned to get updated on heartworm prevention and puppy vaccinations. True herders in spite of their compact size, Minis are bright, self-motivated workers and endearingly loyal and lively companion dogs who have an affinity for horses.

TIME TO SPOIL YOUR PUP!
It might be a sickness but we’re crazy in love with our dogs! National Spoil Your Dog Day on August 10, encourages us to buy that $25 “indestructible” toy that we’ve been swearing up and down we would never buy. Granted, dogs can be a little needy but during times when it seems nobody loves us — they always do. Dogs are hilarious and they don’t hold it against us when we make them wear silly hats and sunglasses. Dogs happily slurp any food we drop on the floor. They only want a warm bed, belly rubs and long walks! Today, make your pup feel special — get those nails painted neon pink!

CELEBRATING OUR CATS!
International Cat Day is observed annually on August 8 and is a day to celebrate one of the world's favorite pets. Cats provide companionship and comfort to many. Studies show having a cat can help to lower stress, anxiety and even depression. Having a cat in your home can also help reduce the risk of heart disease in high-risk individuals. It can even help fight mental illness. Of course, we love them because they are cats!

CELEBRATING SHELTER/RESCUE DOG BIRTHDAYS!
Your dog is your best friend, so of course you want to go all out for their birthday. But what if you don’t know what day your dog was born? For pet parents who adopted their pup from a shelter or rescue, it’s a common problem with a super-fun solution: DOGust, the universal shelter pet birthday! DOGust takes place Aug. 1 each year and is a nationwide celebration for dogs whose birthdays are unknown. It’s been a holiday since 2008, when staff at the North Shore Animal League America of New York set out to ensure even dogs without official birthdays still get their own special day. (In case you are wondering, there is one for cats as well… we’ll chat about that in CATober.)

CELEBRATING THE MUTTS
Dogs are special and there are oodles of national (and international) holidays to prove it. But unlike most of our doggy days, National Mutt Day, on July 31, focuses on the mixed breed dogs who sometimes get overlooked. This holiday inspires people to learn more about adopting one. National Mutt Day also brings attention to the many great mixed breed dogs in need of homes. In fact, they benefit from the spotlight so much that we celebrate mixed breed dogs not just once, but twice a year! On both July 31 and December 2, join us in celebrating all the mutts and mixed breed dogs that make our lives so great.

LUNCH & LEARN WITH HENRY THE CLINIC CAT
This from our favorite Lakeland Animal Clinic Cat, Henry:
“Hey everyone! I’ve had a super busy summer! I helped with a lunch and learn for my clinic team. It was so much fun and everyone learned a lot. I’m doing this regularly to ensure the best care possible for our sweet patients. We have had an attendance of 12 team members from who were eager to stay on top of their knowledge. And who could have led them better than me?! I also sponsored the amazing lunch from for this event. It was my pleasure!”
You are so right, Henry! Here at Lakeland (and at our sister practice Northeast Animal Hospital) we always stay on TOP of the latest tests, procedures and medications.

LOVING A NEW PUP!
We don’t just take care of pets with expertise, we LOVE pets! Dr. Edward Kennedy of Northeast Animal Hospital snuggles with his new pup, Annie the English Springer Spaniel. Spaniels were bred to be hunting dogs but make good family dogs because they are well behaved, love to be involved in all activities and get along well with kids and other pets. Dr. Kennedy (the founder of NEAH) and Annie can look forward to many happy years together.

COLORFUL PET
We love our scale babies as much as our fur babies! April Adams brought in Sammy for his first wellness check-up and Dr. Kirby Sills declared him in perfect health. Dr. Sills sees exotic pets at both of our locations — Northeast Animal Hospital and Lakeland Animal Clinic. Sammy is a veiled chameleon. His species is native to the Arabian Peninsula in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. Other common names include cone-head chameleon, Yemen chameleon and Yemeni chameleon. Sammy was born pastel green and without his distinctive casque (or veil) on his head. He grew this as well as became more colorful as he matured. Veiled chameleons are known for their variable color changes due to a variety of factors, including to show aggression, social status, reproduction and stress. He was certainly chillin’ with Dr. Sills.

Whether they are the four-legged furry kind or come from the more serpentine species, click away. Fishes and birds, pigs and equine, canine and feline should all get in line for their favorite pose. If they are friends, take a few snapshots of them together! On All American Pet Photo Day, every pet gets included.

NATIONAL KITTEN DAY
National Kitten Day on July 10 purrfectly celebrates the cuddly warmth of a kitty. The miniature fur balls of energy snuggle their way into our hearts with no effort at all. Within a flick of their tiny ears, we're in love.

National Kitten Day reminds us that while kittens are well equipped to find their way into our hearts, many don't find homes. They're abandoned at shelters, on the side of the road or wild and feral. Spaying and neutering our pets, including our cats, is vital to their health and keeping the stray population down.

On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Tomas Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on, the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence. Northeast Animal Hospital is closed today in observance of Independence Day. For emergencies, please call either 601.939.8999 or 601.790.1918 (Urgivet Emergency Vets of Madison).

HELP FOR FIREWORK ANXIETY
Many dogs suffer from noise aversion, a fear and anxiety exhibited upon hearing loud noises (including fireworks) that leads to stress, suffering and potentially destructive behavior. Northeast Animal Hospital can help your pup during the Fourth of July holiday with medications to keep him calm. Call us at 601.956.2932 for more information. (We will be closed Thursday, July 4.)

LUCKY DUCK DONNA!
It’s not just fur babies who come in for regular checkups, but our feathered friends as well. Donna the Duck took to her checkup like a duck to water (we can keep this up!). Donna is owned by our fabulous groomer, Liz Camacho, and has been with Liz since she was just a wee duckling. James Quarles, our vet tech, had his “ducks in a row” with sweet Donna. At Lakeland Animal Clinic and Northeast Animal Hospital, Dr. Chloe Emery and her team specialize in all sorts of small critters. Come and see us!

SITTING PRETTY FOR VACCINATIONS
Rocco Adams was at Lakeland Animal Clinic recently for his yearly vaccinations. Like all German Shepherds, he preferred to be comfortable while waiting, so he grabbed a chair! Rocco is nine years old and, as all German Shepherd owners will tell you — he only sheds two times a year, for six months each time. When your pups get older it is always good to keep vaccinations up-to-date and to have Dr. Chloe and her fellow vets check for arthritis, joint problems and more. Rocco frequents both Lakeland and Northeast Animal Clinic. You can, too. (P.S. Black spots are common on GSD tongues.)
