Legacy International Dressage

Legacy International Dressage Welcome to Legacy International Dressage, equestrian facility located in Rincon, GA.

Our facility is strategically positioned for easy access to area schooling shows, training opportunities in Aiken, and rated dressage competitions across GA, SC, and NC. Laura Barnes is the owner, manager, and head trainer of Legacy International Dressage, where she applies her lifelong passion for horses to the art of dressage. Starting her equestrian journey at the age of seven in Atlanta, she q

uickly advanced from a student to a working role, managing lesson programs and riding Grand Prix horses by age 11. After graduating high school at just 14, she acquired her Friesian gelding, Jeremiah, which marked the beginning of her commitment to training young horses. Despite facing challenges, including a diagnosis of adult-onset epilepsy that temporarily halted her riding career, Laura remained dedicated to her craft and became PATH certified with Jeremiah as both horse and instructor. After gaining extensive experience managing Applewood Farm and working with esteemed trainers, Laura returned to South Georgia to establish a 24-stall facility on 14.5 acres. At Legacy International Dressage, she emphasizes individualized training programs that prioritize the well-being of each horse. With a focus on comprehensive care, Laura collaborates with a team of specialists to ensure that all horses receive optimal support in their training and health. Her commitment is further highlighted by sponsorships from notable brands like Devacoux and Seminole, reflecting her dedication to excellence in dressage training.

Meet Laura Barnes!
Owner - Manager - Head Trainer

Laura's passion for horses ignited at the age of seven in Atlanta, where she trained under Annelise Vogt-Harber at Vogt Riding Academy. After three years of lessons and barn work, she became a working student, gaining invaluable experience with her own horses and assisting in managing the lesson program.

By age 12, Laura was not only helping with new lesson horses but also deepening her dressage education alongside Grand Prix horses at Vogt Riding Academy. This experience fueled her ambition to master classical German dressage and set high-level goals early on. At just 15, she graduated high school and received a Friesian gelding named Jeremiah, who has been her loyal companion since he was seven months old. Despite doubts from others about raising a young horse, Laura embraced the challenge to enhance her training skills.

After high school and college, Laura worked at various facilities, including Applewood Farm in Alpharetta, GA, where she collaborated with esteemed trainers from the Atlanta Dressage community. A significant part of her journey was working with Ashley Marascalco, head young horse trainer for High Valley Hanoverians. This role allowed Laura to learn about breeding and raising foals while pursuing her goal of becoming a young horse trainer.

In 2013, Laura and Jeremiah became PATH certified as both horse and instructor. In 2016, she acquired her second horse, a Friesian named Droom Draak, who is now seven years old and under saddle with Laura. Recently, she trained horses from training level to Grand Prix in Canton, GA. In May 2024, Laura returned to South Georgia to care for her family and now operates a 24-stall facility on 14.5 acres in Rincon.

Laura prioritizes the well-being of each horse in her program through individualized training plans that include 4-5 days of work per week and enriching experiences outside the arena. She collaborates with a dedicated team of farriers, vets, and bodywork specialists to ensure top-notch care for all horses.

Proudly sponsored by Devacoux and Seminole, Laura looks forward to expanding her training and lesson programs while continuing to deepen her knowledge in the equine industry.

WHOA spooky… how would you explain this?! Supernatural maybe?

This morning I delivered this special piece to our amazing client Legacy International Dressage and I’m so happy I was on the phone to hear her reaction when she saw it for the first time.

Sometimes a client’s story has so much meaning, emotion and sentimentality that it becomes very difficult for me to put into words.

Laura is a person who has been through more than most of us can even fathom, yet she’s overcome every hurdle with strength, poise and unwavering positivity.

Last month, her dream came true and she purchased a stunning farm outside of Savannah, GA. Two days later, her new farm sustained a tremendous amount of damage from the hurricane. Yet still, she has nothing but gratitude and optimism.

She’s a person whose world revolves around her family and her horses, and ‘time’ means everything to her. She cherishes every second.

Laura’s most prized possession was a pocket watch her grandfather left to her when she was only seven years old. In her mid-20’s she modified it to include the hands from a watch belonging to her Great grandfather to bring their legacies together in time. This watch meant the world to her and it stayed with her everywhere she went.

And one day her bag was stolen, and in it was her beloved watch.

The physical pain Laura has dealt with throughout her life paled in comparison to the emotional pain of losing this pocket watch.

And here’s where it gets weird…

I always say it feels like I’m not the one drawing these logos. Truth be told, I’m a terrible artist (you can see proof in the reel I posted on Instagram a few days ago).

Without the risk of sounding too ‘woo-woo’, I’ll just leave it as saying something magical happens… I draw my horrible little lines and suddenly, they transform into what you see.

Well, this logo was beyond spooky. After I finished drawing the watch and the horse, I asked Laura to find an image on Google that most closely resembled the winding mechanism at the top of her stolen watch.

I never asked what the watch looked like previously, because I needed the freedom to integrate a horse into whatever ‘idea of a watch’ would work best. But then at the end, I realized I could make that stem piece resemble her own watch to add an extra special touch.

Then, she sent me a photo of the watch.

I had drawn her grandfather’s watch without ever seeing it.

Her favorite time is 11:11 and I couldn’t think of a way to have that time displayed without it being covered by the horse, so I added a second hand, which you’ll see both point to 11.

I had no idea how many thousands of styles of pocket watches there are and somehow, the watch I drew carries an uncanny resemblance to the one she lost (photo in the comments).

If you enjoyed this story and would like to read about another similar occurrence that happened around 5 years ago, check out this one too: https://eqgraphics.com/gallop-logo/
