"The one lung runner" I received this call on my way home from another local tracker who was unable to take the track. It was a local hunter so I told him that I had to go home first then I would be on my way. We arrived at the shot location about six hours after the shot took place. After they lost blood the two guys did a small grid search with not luck on finding more blood. We got on the track where the hunter shot and proceeded to where the hunters grid searched. When Maverick got to the grid search I could tell that he lost the scent just on the way he was acting. I told the hunter to stay put for a minute. I took Maverick and made a loop back where we came from so Maverick would cross the scent again in a 90 degree angle and I would watch for when he picked it back up. As we made it to where I knew the original track was Maverick turned hard right as we crossed the scent again just as I hoped he would, at this point I really held him back on the leash so he would go slower and sort out the grid search from the real deer track. It worked perfectly! As we made our decent off the ridge we started to get blood again ( which is always reassuring). When we got to the bottom of the valley I told the hunter to look at Maverick, his head wasn't on the scent trail....... it was up high and at one point he was standing on his hind legs with his nose in the air. I told him that Maverick smells the deer and it is really close! Sure enough as we got into the brook the deer was laying 15 yards to our left. Total track length was 880 yards with the hunter taking out one lung. Another beautiful deer recovered by Maverick 9 Pointer 176lbs. Boonefield Labradors
