Easter-time PSA: 🐰 Thinking of getting a bunny?

Did you know…

Bunnies have the same space and enrichment needs as any dog or cat because they are just as intelligent. If you wouldn’t keep those pets in a cage, you shouldn’t put rabbits in one.

Free-roaming is ideal for rabbits, but the MINIMUM enclosure space should be a 6ftx6ft penned area with at least 3 hours of exercise time outside their home-base.

Buns p**p 200-300 times a day. They can be litter-box trained but it may never be flawless.

They are considered an exotic pet which comes with exotic vet bills

They are VERY fragile and young handlers can easily hurt them. They also have fragile digestive systems

Not all rabbits like to be held or cuddled— they are a prey animal and most prefer all feet on the ground.

They are naturally “destructive” with instincts to dig and chew. They need to be monitored or you will lose charging cables or your flawless baseboards/carpets. (This can be curbed by offering toys and puzzles to keep them occupied.)

They are a social animal and are happier when bonded to another rabbit (or more).

They need to be spayed or neutered because rabbits can make A LOT of babies. The procedure also lessens territorial marking and prevents cancer.

They live for 10 years.

If this all sounds do-able for your family, they make the BEST pets. Just please know what you’re getting into because too often these pets are dumped in the woods (how I adopted my first bun) or left to live in a cage (how I rescued my second).

They can learn tricks and are hilarious little companions. Once you form a bond with your rabbit, there is nothing like it. Please treat them as more than a “starter pet” or “easy pet” because they are NOT.

Lastly, because shelters and rescues are over capacity because people didn’t realize what they were getting into. Learn more at rabbitnetwork.org

The House Rabbit Network is a non-profit organization devoted to sheltering, adopting and educating the general public about pet rabbits.
